    Re: 2010 Pirates

It's not all on the rotation. Ohlendorf gets the lowest run support in baseball. He's been at a 3-4 ERA all year, with a number of good starts with a ONE and ELEVEN record to show for it. That's one win...eleven losses. That's just an outright pitiful offense right there. Can blame it mostly on the inconsistency of their youth, but still. Even when a starter does pitch well, they're going to lose behind that team.

I hope they can hotshot a few of their guys through the minors next season. Morris could join the rotation next year. Still think Taillon can make it up in two seasons, given his stuff. Maybe not as a starter, but just bringing him up to throw some relief innings like other teams do.

So they said on the news tonight that if the Pirates lose their last game to the Marlins they will tie the '63 or '65 (I forget which) Mets for the worst road record in a 162 game season. And yet they were 40-41 at home. Also, Charlie Morton got a decent outing for his last start but got no run support.

Charlie's been alright in a few starts during this latest stint. Pirates have been showing some life in this last month. McCutchen/Tabata/Walker/Alvarez look to be a very legit top of the order for the future.

I really hope it's not Ken Macha, but I sadly think it will be. They go for these "hometown discount" guys and it pisses me off.

Go for a guy who has a history of bringing young talent around.

And the search has come to an end. The Pirates have hired Texas Rangers hitting coach Clint Hurdle as their new manager.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates will introduce former Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle as their new manager at a news conference Monday.

Hurdle, the hitting coach for the AL champion Texas Rangers, replaces John Russell, who was fired the day after completing a 105-loss season -- the Pirates' worst in 58 years and their record-extending 18th consecutive losing season. Russell lost 299 games in three seasons.

As long as he's not quick to yank a pitcher out of the game, I think he's a good fit for the organization considering he was in "small" market so they used farm players (I know, 84 million vs 35 million doesn't really compare). Also he needs to keep a consistent lineup this time around for the players to know their roles.

Considering the Pirates had the worst starting pitching staff in all of MLB, he better be quick to yank out a starter.

                      lol agreed^^^

I'm pleased with the hiring. Mainly because I feel he's a guy who can bring the potential in our young bats, more so than the alternative was. If we can get Cutch/Tabata/Walker/Alvarez to where they need to be (and should be) then we have a pretty good lineup that can provide us with some entertainment and keep us in games, until our pitching arrives. Because lets face it, we have a bit of a wait before there's any legitimate pitching in the Pirates rotation.

The Pirates have given up on Zach Duke, Andy LaRoche, and Delwyn Young and won't off them contracts making them free agents.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates won't offer contracts to left-hander Zach Duke and infielders Andy LaRoche and Delwyn Young, designating them for assignment in moves that effectively make them free agents.

I get it with Duke, he probably wants more than he's worth. His stuff is so lacking, he's just a groundball pitcher and really not worth a new contract when Maholm is relatively the same, only better. Andy LaRoche, ugh, what a shame he turned out the way he did. Even as a bench player, he was completely useless. Went from average to bad to really bad to just plain awful.

I guess I can be the first to report it? lol. So far, the Pirates have signed RHP Kevin Correia, LHP Scott Olsen, and OF Matt Diaz. They selected SS Josh Rodriguez for the Indians. To complete the Zach Duke trade to Arizona, they picked up a former top Arizona prospect in Cesar Valdez. That's about it so far up to now. They have also been linked to trade talks with Atlanta about Kenshin Kawakami. According to a few sources, they are also tossing around trade ideas with teams about Ryan Doumit and Paul Maholm. I'm sure they will complete at least a deal to send Doumit out, but i'm not so sure about Maholm. If we pick up another SP, maybe we will trade Maholm, but otherwise, I don't think we will.

I honestly like what they've done with the pitching staff. Correia/Olsen are both upgrades over the garbage they had last season. On top of them, they can integrate their own pitching into the mix. Obviously it's not a "winning" rotation or anything, but it's something that I feel could better keep us in ballgames, and win more games off of what will hopefully be a much more matured offense. Most importantly, that's a better bridge to our young guys in the farm than what we had. Hopefully with these guys we won't have to suffer 100+ losses while waiting on Tallion and co. to arrive in Pittsburgh.

Was kind of surprised they let Lastings Milledge go. I thought he was their project player. He had a few nice spurts, but he was largely disappointing. Surprising lack of power. Thought they would keep him for at least another year to see if he got his stock up, and then dump him.
