Chipper seriously considered retiring in 2010. I bet had he not torn his ACL, he'd already be gone - no way he was going to go out like that. I'm glad he's playing one more season. He's my favorite player of all time (Tom Glavine got supplanted when he went to the Mets). Growing up in little league, I was a tall third baseman/left fielder as well, and dabbled in switch hitting (I could hit pretty well from the left side, but I was never confident enough about it to go up to a coach and say I wanted to do it). I looked up to the guy a lot. It will be sad to see him go. But it will be a lot easier if he can sandwich world titles at either end of his career - how many guys win a World Series their rookie year and their final year?

Hm, I don't know. Still think that Prado would be most likely to just move back to 3B and we get Swisher or someone.Comment

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
Maybe. They may have to keep Prado in the OF if they lose Bourn in the offseason too. Terdo hit 52 doubles in high-A ball last year - dude can rake. Even if he's not ready to take the job over next year, long term the job looks like it's his unless Salcedo starts living up to his potential.Comment

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
What do you guys think about Conor Jackson? He was just released by the Rangers. He's a right handed bat, can play all 4 corner positions, and is a .270 career hitter. He has the potential to hit .300 and 15+ homers. Hasn't been quite the same since his bout with valley fever but I think he would be good for our team.Comment

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
Definately not an everyday guy, no space open for him to be that. He can be like a utility guy, play some 1st, 3rd, LF & RF when a starter needs a day off or an injury occurs. I think he could be real useful, especially in the time Chipper will be out the first couple of weeks or so.Comment

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
Hasn't Heyward played CF some this spring? With him losing some weight from last year, he could probably fill in if needed. If Bourn gets hurt and has to go on the DL, then it becomes an issue as I don't think anyone wants Heyward playing CF everyday.Comment

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
Plus, you're looking at Conor like he could get back to his best. He can't, imo. Valley Fever takes a lot out of you, and it doesn't look like Conor is someone who's going to recover fully. Since the '09 season when he contracted it, he's hitting .232/.306/.323 with 8 hr. And then there's the fact that he was 3 for 33 this spring before Texas cut him.Comment

The Braves add more depth by signing Livan Hernandez. He 8-13 last year with a 4.47 era. Obviously, the Braves feel neither Teheran or Delgado are ready, so Livan will likely start the season in the rotation until Hudson is healthy.Comment

Braves general manager Frank Wren said Hernandez will be primarily be used in a relief role, but there may be some instances when he is asked to make a spot start. His signing, Wren said, does not affect the battle between Randall Delgado and Julio Teheran for the fifth spot in the rotation.Comment
