Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
No doubt the Braves need another right-handed arm in the pen, but we know that Medlen has it figured out and can get it done in the starting rotation. I think Teheran is ready to get a real look, but I'd rather have someone that has the experience in there because I think it's going to be a tight race all year. Maybe if Fredi would kick Durbin to the curb and bring up Gearrin it would make moving Meds in the rotation a little easier.
But still, I'm fine with Teheran getting a real shot, but I would just be more comfortable with Meds if the Braves sent Minor down and brought up someone like Gearrin.

But if you move Medlen to the rotation, you know it's just temporary. The guy doesn't have a long term future in that rotation. In addition to Teheran, I think you have to assume that, at some point, Jurrjens will get called back up as well. Plus, Medlen's presence is the reason Venters and Kimbrel aren't getting overworked. He's got a 2.28 era as the workhorse of the staff. You can't replace that with a guy (Gearrin) with a career era over 7. I'd honestly rather see Livan Hernandez in the rotation than Medlen.

First slide this that first series of the year. It really is true that Chipper makes this team go, not having Mac the last couple games hasn't helped either. Hope they can salvage one tonight.

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
Defensively, he isn't good. It says something when the Braves have used Chipper Jones as a defensive replacement. But to be perfectly honest, if it's not Catcher, Center Field, Second Base or Shortstop, any defense is a bonus. I personally feel like 3B may be the least important defensive position on the diamond, since they touch the ball less than any position but pitcher.
That all being said, I like him as a role player. I don't think he's a long term option post-Chipper by any means (he's only hitting .200 right now with a .229 obp), but I think he can be good. I think he's a hard player to motivate though. He started out really well early, and then Chipper started getting healthier and playing more, and his play went in the toilet a little bit. But he's got serious power. The guy has hit 5 hr in just 80 ab's this year. That's pretty impressive. That's a better HR rate than all but 12 qualifiers this season.
By the way, read that the Braves haven't ruled out signing Roy Oswalt, and the only three teams he's really interested in are the Braves, Cardinals, and Rangers.Comment

Oh I deffiantly agree. He's not a long term fix and needs improvement on defense. But like you said, the kid has serious power. And I kno he has ALOT of areas to improve. And he just has KINDA grown on me. But with that said I deffiantly don't believe or want him to be a long term fix, at third. It's gonna take that special player to fill the shoes of Chip at thirdComment

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
I know the Braves were hoping it'd be Joey Terdoslavich next year, but there's no way that's happening. Dude's hitting .190 with 3 hr and 43 k's so far this year. Joe Leonard is hitting .255 with only 1 hr in AA. And Salcedo needs more time to mature as a hitter (.265 in single-A, but that's not too terrible in that league), but his defense is terrible. He's got 15 errors in 39 games. I think he'll end up in the OF.
Next year, I'd imagine the Braves will tender Prado, and move him to 3B, and use the $31 million coming off the books between Chipper, Bourn, and Lowe to (hopefully) resign Bourn and sign a OF'er, like Nick Swisher or Andre Ethier (as cool as it would be to get Hamilton, I just don't see that happening). I think it'd be cool to get Ichiro too (bat him 2nd behind Bourn), but I don't think that's remotely realistic either.Comment

Re: 2012 Atlanta Braves thread
I'm down for Oswalt, that's for damn sure. We have a lot of young guys but dammit, we're in win-now mode. We're good enough to win, let's do what we can to do it. Having the pitching depth in guys like Delgado, Minor, Teheran, etc is nice, but I don't want to have to rely on them if we don't have to, considering how shaky Minor has been thus far.
Get Oswalt, see if he works out. If he does, fantastic.
This last 4 game series against Cincy was ugly. Hopefully we can bounce back against Washington. Hopefully our guys can get healthy ASAP too.Comment
