Well yes, but that's why there are park factors He'll probably have a noticeable home/road split.

wRC+ is the answer to all your problems lol. Such a simple stat.

1.) Does he get on base?
2.) Does he get lots of bases?
3.) Is he being affected by his park?

It sums up all of these, and then makes it easy to read as a percentage of 100.

Thanks for this stat and explaining it so well. I can see why the Jays took a flier on him seeing how his WRC+ a couple years ago was above average. It seems like 2014 may be an anomaly and that he'll trend upwards.

The reason they took a flier on him was separate. From what I've heard, some of his under-the-hood stuff like PD stats (swing%, stuff like that) and Hit F/X (GB% and such) may be pointing to a breakout. wRC+ is just to separate, for example, a player's offensive "struggles" from what is actually just Safeco. Smoak hasn't been very good historically though, they're banking on their metrics being right. Just what I've heard.

Ah, I see well thanks for fleshing out the details of why the Jays were interested in him and brought him into the fold. I can always count on you to give good information like this and the usage of "under the hood" type stats.

My TheScore app is telling me that Russell Martin is now a Blue Jay for 5 years. Don't know any other details.

              EDIT: 5 years $82 million.

As I said in the hot stove thread, I don't like the term but they probably had to do it. I wonder if this makes Navarro expendable or the perfect backup at C and DH. We'll have to see.

Considering he only makes $5 million this season, I hope they keep him as the backup C and DH.

Nice to see the Jays active in the free agent market. Martin should help the young pitchers. He also brings playoff experience and we basically don't have any of that on this team. I doubt he'll be able to produce another 5.5 WAR but he's still an impressive upgrade.

At some point in 2015, we'll see a game with Martin, Lawrie and Pompey all in the lineup -- three Canadians at once. I wonder if that will be a record.

I'm assuming this also means Melky isn't coming back.

I"m pretty sure it means Melky is gone. I could see the Jays trading Dickey now and letting Thole go. This might be the start of the Jays spending some big time bucks this offseason or it may be the one big move and then a bunch of little ones but it seems to me that AA has been pretty aggressive so far this winter.

Pros and cons to the trade.

                      Pro:
Consistency—Donaldson has played 158 games back to back years while Lawrie hasn't played more than 125 in a season.

                      Con:
                      Amount given up—'Lot.

Glad they shipped Lawrie out couldn't stomach looking at his clown act all the time. He thinks he is better than what he is which is just a solid player nothing great.

Obviously getting ahead of my self, but assuming he puts up numbers he did in Oakland with the Jays, and doesn't ever get traded/seriously injured, I think Donaldson could be up there with Gruber and Mulliniks in terms of greatest 3B in Jays history.

Will be good to have a 3B here for awhile. This will be the 9th diff starting 3B Jays have had on opening day,in the past 12 years!

I'm not too worried about the amount given up. None of those guys are projected to be as good as Donaldson is. (and hopefully continue to be) The pitchers are depth guys in the organization and were penciled in behind a lot of guys already so it's not like they were going to be a part of the Jays foreseeable future long term. The SS Baretto may be a "damn why did we trade him" move however i've heard that even though he has a ridiculously high ceiling he's also a super toolsy kid who may not even have a position in the big leagues as scouts say he won't be a SS.

BTW I read a great article with Donaldson's comments this is one guy who is actually happy and excited to play here!

                              Roster as of now:

                              C:
                              Martin,Navarro(to be traded?),Thole

                              IF:
                              Donaldson,Encarnacion,Goins,Izturis,Reyes,Tolleson ,Valencia

                              OF
                              Bautista,Pillar,Pompey,Dirks,Melky(if he stays)

                              SP:
                              Buehrle,Dickey,Happ,Stroman,Hutchison,Estrada

                              RP:
                              Sanchez,Jenkins,Cecil,Loup,Redmond,Rasmussen

Of that roster, there's 27 guys. Navarro likely gone, Thole shouldn't be on main roster(Dickey is only reason he is here),one of Tolleson/Valencia probably sent to AAA(unless Izturis is injured still),1-2 of those OF should be sent to AAA,and either we trade multiple P,or Hutchison,Estrada or Happ moves to bullpen.

I'd still prefer getting a SP,an OF(a CF if Melky stays,or a LF if he goes),2B and DH. Trading Navarro could get us one of those for sure.

Would anyone consider trading for Matt Kemp?

Navarro would be one of(but not the main) players going the other way. Dodgers badly need a C and have too many OF. Seems like Kemp is the most available one on their team.
