    Re: 2016 Cincinnati Reds

Well thankfully our season has ended, these past 3 seasons have been extremely painful for any Reds fans, and for me its been it been even more painful seeing us so bad and the North Side scum Cubs being so good.

Im glad basketball season is upon us, as while I still watch football, its just not the same for me anymore since the majority of QB's in the League can now look like Marino with all the stupid rule changes to handicap defenses.

Hopefully 2017 brings us a much better baseball team, while I dont have overly high expectations for 17, I do think 17 will tell us a lot about what the future will hold with all the young players we have now. Not that I was overly impressed with any of our moves in this rebuild, I do think we have some players that can have descent careers. If we can play around .500 baseball next yr and be competitve with the top teams then we should have some hope going into the 2018 season of being able to vie for a postseason spot.

Really curious to see the offseason moves that gets made now that Walt is no longer calling the shots, supposedly, although he is still a adviser, so that dont overly excite me. After watching Walt give away Chapman, I wish he wasnt involved at all, even though I use to think highly of Walt, but that move as well as some others made me lose faith in him.

Cant say Williams excites me much, but willing to give him a chance, so Im curious to see if he is able to make improvements this offseason. Bench help and Pitching has to be improved if this team is going to be better next yr.

Can we get this named the Official Reds Thread, so we dont need to update every year or make a new one?

Quiet offseason for the Reds, Storen signing and Straily traded for prospects they hope pan out. Can they please just sit Phillips and move on with the rebuild?

Changing the thread title is a great idea. As for the off season, meh. Looks like a potentially good trade for Straily since we picked him for nothing.

As for Phillips, thank you for your service but its damn time to go!

Low risk high reward with Desmond Jennings signing and meh on Arroyo coming back, if he makes the MLB club. Does Winker finally make the club this year?

Homer had surgery on his elbow today and is out 4-6 weeks.

Hindsight being 20/20, if only we had given that contract to Cueto.

Who knows? I'm at the point where I don't get excited about anyone coming up anymore. Seems it is rare for one of our minor league players to get to the big league and be something. Not looking for stardom, but would like to see some become better than average. At least from an every day player perspective. Outside of Votto, I can't remember the last one that was good. Maybe Dunn, but while his HR rate was great, I couldn't stand his k's and avg (no, not a saber guy). He was above avg in hr and walks but other than that was avg or below it in everything else.

If you can't tell, I am not feeling good about the Reds these days. Some players might be good and will be fun to see them grow, but overall outlook for the team doesn't look appealing to me.

One thing if a couple make the club for veteran leadership/bench/relief time. Another if they make the club and start.

Probably no bigger fan of BP than me, but not sure I would go as far as to retire his number though. He is a no doubt Reds HOF'er, and it shouldnt be many years after he retires that he get put in the Reds HOF.

Now if he were to be inducted into Cooperstown, then I would agree with retiring his number. And while Im sure there are a few BP haters out there, that wont agree with what Im about to say, but BP should be heavily considered for Cooperstown. He is one of the greatest defensive 2nd baseman of all time, and while the new school guys like to point to his low OBP to put him down, his batting average for his career is solid, as if I remember right its at .276 or .278. This might not mean much to some, but BP's numbers would probably be a little higher if he hadnt played thru injuries, where most guys would go on the DL. He also hit wherever he was needed in the order, where some guys his caliber would have moan and grown about it. Personally I dont think BP ever has gotten the credit he deserved for what he meant during his years with the Reds. Votto might have been the best player on the Reds teams, but BP was every bit as important to the Reds when they were having success.

Let's pump the brakes here a little bit on Brandon Phillips. No doubt, he's a Reds HOF'er...but Cooperstown?

He's not on the same level as guys like Rogers Hornsby, Eddie Collins, Nap Lajoie, Joe Morgan, Rod Carew, Charlie Gehringer, Ryne Sandberg, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Alomar, Craig Biggio, etc. etc. etc. etc.
