Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
'bout time. Happy Halloween Sox fans.
On another note, I'd consider a Manny for Santana and Erstad if I were the Sox, though I don't think Anaheim would part with Santana. The Sox would then have to find another bat (Konerko?) if such a deal were to happen, though I'd consider it unlikely.Last edited by Misfit; 10-31-2005, 01:39 PM.Comment

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
I blame Lucchino. I hope the fans turn on him cus I'm sick of his little games. The constantly leaking of private matters to the press, the insistance on being a part of baseball negotiations, the stupid money grabbing promotions. He's single-handidly making Boston an unattractive destination for free agent players and now his antics have cost the Red Sox a good general manager.Comment

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
Theo is not coming back. I don't care what Michael Wilbon or any of the talking heads have to say, he's gone, time to move on.
Of the people being interviewed for the vacant GM position, I'd go with Dayton Moore. He's been surrounded by a good front office in the Atlanta Organization and has something to prove. I don't want Jim "I signed Christian Guzman" Bowden as the Sox GM. Of the people talked about, Moore sounds the most promising and if they don't sign him I'd say they promote someone from within the organization. As for who, I have no idea.Comment

Is it true that Wells requested a trade out of Boston? I didn't hear nothing about this until I read this.

If it were my choice, I'd scoop up Depodesta. I think he got the axe unfairly out west, and I like guys who are more stat oriented. I'm sure the FO could hire/find some more "scout" orriented assistants to give the management a more balanced feel.
It seems like if Moore was hired, although you can't argue with what the Braves have done, it would be a step back IMO.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

If you would have told me 1 year ago that I'd see a headline of 'Jim Beattie talks to the local media after interviewing for the position of General Manager of the Boston Red Sox', I would have truly laughed in your face.
This all seems like a horrible nightmare. It's incredible how things fall apart so fast.
Jim F'n Beattie guys. This tool wasn't even good enough to be sole GM of the Orioles, he was co-GM with another wanker, Jim Flanagan. Just..wow. If he's hired, I'm definitely considering not being a die-hard follower of this team.Comment

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
This whole situation makes me sick to my stomach.
from Buster Olney's blog:
In conversation with folks in the game yesterday, this is what they hear: Theo Epstein, feeling great regret over walking away from the Red Sox job, sent feelers through channels to Boston ownership that he's interested in talking about coming back -- and so far, that overture has been rebuffed.
You could understand John Henry's predicament in this. Ownership was extremely unhappy with the way Epstein handled his contract negotiations, according to others in the game, and then by leaving abruptly, Epstein helped to create a situation in which Larry Lucchino has been damaged and pounded in the court of public opinion. To bring back Epstein now, after all that has transpired, would be another blow to Lucchino, because it would create the perception that Epstein had won out in his request for a change in how some decisions are made within the front office.
Henry could have solved this months ago, of course, if he had simply stepped in and brokered a solution between Epstein and Lucchino. But that's not his style.Comment

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
That's absurd. At some point, pride should be set aside for the good of the organization. Henry's loyalty to Lucchino over Epstein sickens me, as well.
Dayton Moore is out of the running for the GM position. I officially don't care who gets the job now as no one of prominence remains in the running. I know some are holding out hope for Epstein, but I think there is zero chance of him coming back (though it would be the preferred resolution).
With Cameron in San Diego, the Mets need an outfielder and maybe they'll make a push for Manny. With Cameron gone though, who do they deal?
According to the Globe, the Sox are prepared to offer Damon a three year deal worth somewhere between 25 and 27 million. I bet Boras turns it down but it would be a good deal from the perspective of the Red Sox. I'm pretty sure though that Boras is looking for something in the 4 to 5 year range worth 50 million plus.Comment

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
Well with the trade for Beckett, the first domino has fallen for the Red Sox. This deal opens the door for them to start making some other moves. Any predictions?
Wells - Gets traded to SD for Roberts or bullpen help.
Manny - Isn't going anywhere.
Youkilis - 1B or could be traded
Mueller - Gone
Damon - re-signs with the Red Sox. I know it doesn't seem like he's worth it, but I see his situation as the same thing as Varitek's. A lot of other teams might want him, but realistically, who is going to pay him more than the Red Sox will? If the Yankees get Giles, Damon loses a ton of bargaining power.Comment

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
I agree with all of your predictions. Despite that tidbit about Manny from Ortiz, I still don't think he's going anywhere. LA doesn't want him, so where could he go? Unless the Red Sox and Giants want to swap Manny for Bonds, there's no way he's going out West. NY is the only suitor it seems and they're hesitant to include Lastings Milledge in any deal and Manny hasn't even said if he'd play for the Mets anyways. The Red Sox are a better team with Manny and there isn't a bat out there that could replace him so I think the team forces him to suck it up and play in Boston next year.
I'm sad to say that Bill Mueller's tenure in Boston is likely over. He was a model citizen and a true proffessional during his time with the team but his knees, age, and the aquisition of Mike Lowell make Mueller's return unlikely. Lowell is possibly an upgrade over Mueller at third. His defense is just as good if not better which is a plus. His average won't be as good as Mueller's, but he makes up fot it with better power numbers. Mueller was almost strictly a singles hitter last year.
I'm not entirely comfortable with Youkilis at first, but unless the Red Sox sign Paul Konerko (doubtful) that looks like where he'll play.Comment
