I am not doubting him based on this one performance, but I doubted this before it happened. They shoulda just let him work up his stamina and bring him back in September if it took that long, we need this guy in the rotation. I just can't believe that we would take this huge risk when we have a guy like Timlin who can do it.

It's going to take some time to determine if this Schilling experiment is gonna work. I'm not ready to judge him after facing 2 of the best hitters in the game in his first game back. At this point, he needs to pitch, whether it's good or bad. The Red Sox were good enough to survive a few bad outings from Foulke and they're good enough to survive the same with Schill.
lol I've been thinking about Curtis alot lately. But I always referred to him as Curtis Letspanic. Whatever happened to Mike MacDougal??
I remember looking at his numbers a week or so ago and they weren't that bad. Anything would be an improvement to our already lacklust BP IMO.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
Jayson Stark today on ESPNews: "You'll see the Red Sox make a move for the best starter or the best reliever before the deadline, whichever one is available." Among the names he mentioned, AJ Burnett and Billy Wagner. I think with AJ's stuff and the Marlins demands, which is basically a pitcher to replace him, a closer or end of the line reliever, and a close to ready prospect, we should probably stay out of that one. Anyone heard what the Phils would demand for Mr. Wagner? If it were Shoppach and any combination of prospects outside of the top 5, I think Theo would have already initiated the talks.Comment

I heard a rumor that there are some Burnett for Arroyo talks going on. It just isn't clear what the Marlins would want in addition to Arroyo. I could see a mega deal going down with Philadelphia involving Wagner and Thome but I really doubt the Red Sox would be willing to take on that much salary.Comment

Stark also said the Phils are listening to anyone about everybody, Bobby Abreu included. I know the brass is waiting till the offseason to address Johnny's contract, but if we knew for sure we couldn't keep him, Abreu is the guy I'd want over just about anyone. Again, probably couldn't happen, but what a pickup that would be if we knew more. I think the Phils are stuck with Thome though, which is funny because how good Ryan Howard can be.Comment

Originally posted by CWood2I'd gladly give up Arroyo to get AJ, the only question is what top pitching prospects do they want in addition since we can't give them a major league reliever, and God forbid Hanley. I'm glad we're headed to Portland in the next few days though, just in case!
The question about AJ Burnett is, can you sign him and for what? I've heard rumors he wants up to $60/4. I think that's too much since he hasn't been all that healthy and they already have over $20 mil committed to Schilling and Clement for next year. However, if they don't think they can sign Damon or don't want to deal with that drama it might make sense to improve the team elsewhere.

That would be one wild deal if Abreu was involved. I doubt anything of that magnitude will happen though.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. Abreu/Wagner for Manny? Theo's always trying to get rid of Manny, so I mean, who knows.
Good thing we have Mike Myers.
I don't see Philadelphia moving Abreu. I know Ed Wade is supposedly dumb and all, but I don't see most GM's moving core players who produce. You strive to attain guys like Abreu, you don't just move them for what wouldn't clearly be an upgrade.Comment

Plus try explaining to your fans (philly fans that is) that you traded away the guy who won the HR derby (also setting the record for a single HR derby round and total contest) and keeping Thome with his albatross contract. AND keeping Howard in the minors as well, along with shipping your best pitcher too.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. Although these pitchers have no business being in the majors, you have to give credit to the Sox offense tonight... they just keep pounding the ball all over the place. Hopefully it'll be a different story aginst Unit tomorrow.

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread
On 1510 today they said that the Sox may offer Arroyo, Youks, and a minor leaguer to the Florida Marlins for A.J. Burnett. I'm not sure if I like this trade. Arroyo 7-5 with a 4.14 ERA in the AL while Burnett is 5-6 with a 3.64 ERA in the NL. I'm not sure giving away Youkilis and a prospect (probably Shoppach) for an improvement of 0.2-0.3 in ERA (assuming his ERA goes up a bit with a change of leagues).
If they'll take Wade Miller instead of Arroyo then I'm all for it, but if not, I hope the Sox don't offer the deal.Boston Red Sox l New England Patriots l Boston Celtics l Massachusetts Minutemen l Boston College EaglesComment
