    Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion

Being reported that the Henry brothers will be going to Kansas.

Having Xavier would have been phenomenal for UK but the biggest piece we are missing is an elite PG. Would have LOVED to have Henry though.

Ok Calipari, bring in Wall or Bledsoe....please.

My prediction is that he narrows his list down to Kentucky, NC State, Miami, and Dook.

With Wall, Kentucky will definitely make some noise in the SEC. I'm not going to pencil them in as conference champions yet, because we have yet to see what he can do at the next level. With Patterson likely gone (see weak draft this year, stronger draft next year, his performance this year compared to having to share the post with Cousins and uncertainty in Cal's style of play to get him production) and Henry rumored to end up in Kansas (see http://www.zagsblog.com/) this team will have to grow up fast to be serious contenders. Top 10 team.

With Dook, Wall will be able to stay close to his mom who has been ill for the past five years. Nothing is a stronger bond than a mother and his son. Enough said. Dook will become hyped as the ACC favorites because of the JW Kool-Aid everyone's on. However, he says he's waiting to see if he has a qualified score ...isn't Dook considered an Ivy League type school. Top 5 team.

With NC State, same situation being closer to his mother. He will be the focal point and get numbers, however, he won't contend for a championship and only hover between 4th-7th place ACC.

I only have Miami on here because he's visiting them this Friday. Not much of a draw for them.

UNC looks to be out of the picture as I stated earlier, unless WE and TL declare for the draft this weekend, and that would give Roy a 10-25% chance of getting on his final list.

My prediction: He becomes a Wildcat. He knows that Cal gets good production and exposure out of his guards...Tyreke, Rose, CDR. He and Meeks could possibly be the best backcourt in the nation. They could blaze through a relatively weak SEC and sneak out a 2 seed at worst and go deep in the tourney.

I just noticed that the deadline to declare is April 26th, which is also the same date as his so called announcement to narrow his list. Maybe he is waiting for Roy Williams and Co. to see if TL and WE are declaring. Roy can't officially offer until they BOTH declare . Also, notice that he said maybe three or four schools. Perhaps he has three schools in mine for sure and UNC is the "maybe" fourth school. Maybe it's coincidence or maybe is just wishful thinking. But UNC does have everything he wants in a school...a coach with good PG developing experience, close to his mom, championship contender, grew up a huge Tar Heel fan.

        Oh man. I humor myself.

Darnell Dodson has been released from his LOI at Memphis. Word is he may commit to the Cats today (Calipari is meeting with him today) or tomorrow. We will see.

Vee Sanford is a baller. He isn't ranked high now, but he wasn't even ranked before but he has improved tremendously. I think he will be a very good contributor by his sophomore/junior year. Congrats.

Hardly. All it means is there is room. I don't know how hard Roy is going to go after him. I don't know if Wall really wants to add another candidate this late when he should be narrowing the choices. Frankly, I doubt even Wall knows what he's going to do. Paper the other day mentioned he didn't even know if he qualified for college yet. The guy could be headed to Europe. Or he might try to get in the NBA draft w/that loophole (no matter what's been said publicly).

Personally, I think he's playing this smart. He's taking his time in making a decision and not giving too much info or hints towards anything.

It would make perfect sense that one of the reasons he waiting until Monday to make his list, is that it's the draft declaration deadline and that he wanted to see if Lawson AND Ellington go. He probably didn't officially list UNC as a school so far, because he didn't want to lead anyone on without having a guaranteed spot on the roster. He did however mention the Heels as a possibility, and why not? They were his dream school growing up and he would fit in perfectly with Roy's system. Also, with a handful of NBA players, a couple lottery picks, and coming off a championship season, he wouldn't have the pressure of coming in and being "the Man"

Here's the kicker though, his so-called mentor Brian Clifton said publicly that he would absolutely not support Wall going to UNC. Why? I have no freaking clue. I guess the parents who are lawyers, former NBA players, and doctors that send their kids to play for Roy are making a poor decision.

If this kid doesn't play for the Heels next season it will be because of either two things: (1) He didn't get the scores needed to be a Tar Heels or (2) Roy backed off due to too much Clifton...he doesn't and will never deal with "handlers." He wants to be a Tar Heel bad. All signs point to it, but he doesn't choose UNC....they'll choose him.

Biased or not, I believe realistically this kid's best bet is a Tar Heel. He'll be closed to his mom, who is ill (remember, he already lost his father). With the weapons around him, he'll be able to operate freely and without the pressure of being the 1st scoring option. At UK, he'll be on a Sweet 16 team, elite 8 at best. At UNC, he'll be on an Elite 8 team, Final Four at best.

I know I'll be look at as dumb, but I'm calling it now...it's UNC or UK. mark it down.

Don't count out Duke either although I don't think their style fits him at all.

As far as UK being only a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 at best with Wall, well I guess we will just have to wait and see.

You're right about that. The only thing they have going for them that he'd benifit from is their court spacing. However he seems to be the kind of play that can dominate with the ball in his hands no matter what, he's just that quick. However, their recent run or lack thereof coupled with their recent shuffling, uncertainty, and lack of steady production from the PG spot has got to throw him off.

What they lack is depth on their frontline and a couple of bangers. Sorry but Lance Thomas is a softer, your 7 footer shouldn't be getting less than 6 boards a game, Ryan Kelly is not a true big and too small to bang down low, and 1 Mason Plumlee isn't gonna save your squad.

Was told that Roy Williams has said that as far as recruiting a player, other than getting info from the coach he doesn't like talking to the high school coaches. Was told that he never really have, he's said that the player is coming to play for him and their parent(s) are trusting him with their son. The coach has nothing to do wit hit as far as Roy is concerned. This of course from my understanding is why Clifton doesn't want Wall to go to UNC, because Roy doesn't want to deal with Clifton and Clifton doesn't like that.
