    Who's @ fault for Doherty's firing?

Who do we blame for the Carolina fiasco? I don't think Matt should have been fired. But it is his own fault. Here's my reasoning.

I said it when he was hired & I've continued to repeat it. Matt should not have insisted on bringing his own assistants. These guys he had loyalty too were even more inexperienced than he was. None came from a large program. They were a bunch of greenhorns who had never lived big time college hoops before. They were Matt's downfall.

A head coach is supposed to be hated to some degree. He's the one that brings down the hammer. It's the job of the assistants to communicate to the players what the coach is looking for. The HC kicks butt, the AC pats back.

The fact that players say they didn't know their roles or their place in the program shows Matt's assistants weren't doing their jobs. They should have been there to reinforce what Matt was trying to get across in a more friendly manner. But they obviously failed.

From what I've read & quotes from players, it doesn't look like players were being cursed excessively, being made to run laps till they threw up. It sounds like they were frustrated about what the coach was looking for. Matt certainly should have been a better communicator. But I'm pretty sure he was delegating much of that responsibility to those whom he trusted to bring in. They failed him. And since Doherty insisted on bringing them, he is ultimately @ fault.

The assistants were Doherty's downfall???? Last time I watched a game the Head Coach coaches the team. Assistants are there to help the head coach but it is the coaches job to make sure the players know what they are doing, not the assistants. Yeah, the assistant coaches help the players understand what the coach is trying to get across to them. I do not get blaming the assistants for Doherty's failures.

The Head Coach takes all the blame when things go wrong and Doherty is the one to blame. Also coaches are not supposed to be hated by the players in any degree. No, they shouldnt be best friends or anything like that but the Head Coach is to be respected. They bring down the hammer because players make mistakes and thats how they get there point across. If the players respect the coach they listen because they know he is just trying to make them a better player. All coaches bring down the hammer but I really doubt that every coach is hated by there players at all.

I'm going to guess it's late so your comprehension isn't @ 100%. I said it was Doherty's fault. He, IMO, delegated responsibility to people not ready for it. Yes, he's ultimately responsible for communication breakdowns. He kept these assistants w/him & they failed him. It is his own fault for insisting on bringing these guys who had not paid their dues yet & it cost him.

Also most don't hate their coach. But you can't tell me there's a major college coach that had one player for a whole season that he didn't have dreaming of his death.

But your using his assistants as a scapegoat for his poor coaching the pass 2 years. You could say the same thing about UNC as you are about Doherty's assistants. Doherty had a couple good years at Norte Dame and they hire him. They did really have no choice since no one else would go to UNC but he was in no way experienced enough to be at a program like UNC yet. He was a little green under the collar as well. He could have had good assistant but it doesnt make up for the poor coaching he has done.

I'm glad he is gone. They never should have hired him in the first place. I think UNC realized that if they didn't get rid of him, more players were going to transfer.

They still might transfer, Scott May wants Sean to leave because he isnt happy with UNC playing him as post player. Scott thinks Sean is more of a face the basket type of guy. I dont know about that but we would happily welcome him at Indiana even though he screwed us the frist time because his family told Indiana not to recruit any other big man because Sean was interested in them and they wanted no competetion for Sean if he went there. So Indiana didnt get May or anyone else who can play inside.

I came into school this morning and had a librarian ask me about the whole thing, knowing I'm a Duke fan. So I was honest with her and told her that they should have let Doh stay for a little longer. She told me that they should stop letting Dean Smith and the Athletic Director call the shots. I didn't wanna argue with her, so I just left it at that.

Dean Smith didn't do so good in his first 3 years at Carolina either. He went 23-19 or something close to, and Doh went 23-25, bringing in a share of the ACC title. He had one bad year last year. The football team won more games than the basketball team . But this year he 'rebounded' and beat some really good teams. And they want to fire him ?

                            I don't understand

The other thing, why would they fire somebody and not already have somebody in their back-pocket to pull out as HC? Jordan probably won't take the job, using my own intuition. They don't want George Karl. Larry Brown has had an over-achieving season with the Sixers, and Larry Brown and AI have a strong relationship, and contrary to what people will tell you, I'm sure if Brown left Philly, Iverson would have a fit. So Larry Brown probably won't go to UNC.

The best looking candidate right now is Roy Williams, and he is in the Final Four right now, and if he wins the whole thing, why would he leave?
