Who do we blame for the Carolina fiasco? I don't think Matt should have been fired. But it is his own fault.....Matt should not have insisted on bringing his own assistants.
A head coach is supposed to be hated to some degree....The fact that players say they didn't know their roles or their place in the program shows Matt's assistants weren't doing their jobs.....And since Doherty insisted on bringing them, he is ultimately @ fault.

Maybe this quote will help some of you zero in on what my point was. IT WAS DOHERTY'S OWN FAULT.

I think Roy hasn't made a decision yet. He's no doubt preventing himself getting painted into a corner. Keeping his options open.

Re: Who\'s @ fault for Doherty\'s firing?

From DBR..........In the day after Matt Doherty's termination at UNC (you can call it resignation if you'd like, but that's kind of silly), various interesting tidbits have come to light. Though the controversy still rages, a general consensus seems to be forming that the university had to do something, which they certainly did. There are a number of interesting takes in the media, with Michael Wilbon basically calling Doherty a jackass, Mike DeCourcy saying he didn't deserve it, and various people saying that UNC's reputation has been tarnished. On other fronts, a number of people in the media seem to think that Baddour isn't long for his job. Finally, Larry Brown says he's not interested, and George Karl says he hasn't been contacted, and UNC fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief: Brown has a bad habit of getting schools on probation, and George Karl doesn't really fit the UNC image, and on top of that, he's not exactly the antidote to coaching volatility. If it's going to be a UNC guy, there's really only one choice, and it's the same as last time, Roy Williams. And that's where all the speculation is centered.

Whoever it is won't come cheap, and that poses a political issue at UNC, since the state government is massively in the hole.

Sounds like they have just a ace in the hole in Roy or they gonna end up like last time again. Can lightining strike twice?

I like Wilbon, but as far as most national media guys go, I doubt they've been keeping up with the situation daily by reading the local papers, and I tend to not necessarily just take their word for things.

As far as Roy goes, the most encouraging thing is that he hasn't come out and said "No" yet. You'd think if he wasn't interested, he would've already said "No" publicly to get rid of the distraction for the team, on this most important of weeks. I think if Kansas wins the championship, he definitely comes to UNC. He could leave then knowing he 'fulfilled' any obligation he may feel he owed to Kansas. He could leave win or lose. I just think it's odd as hell that if he wasn't interested, he hasn't said so, so that he and the team would have one less possible distraction this week. Regardless of whether he's saying so one way or the other in the media, you KNOW this situation is in the back of his players' minds.

Right on about Brown and Karl, by the way. I mentioned why I don't want Brown to get the job in an earlier post (his age), but you're right about his getting his past programs into a little trouble with the NCAA. He's clearly better off in the NBA where he doesn't have to worry about all the collegiate rules. I've never thought they would take Karl. The guy just seems a little off.

After Roy, it's got to be a VERY established outsider. My fingers are crossed that it would be Tubby Smith. I mean, this is UNC we're talking about. We can't be bringing in some scrub coach from the MAC conference.

As far as the salary goes, as much money as the basketball program makes for the school, they won't have any trouble paying whatever coach they get, regardless of the state government's financial problems.

Last time around, they offered to make Roy Williams the highest paid coach in college basketball. Instead, he stayed at Kansas where he is the lowest paid men's basketball coach in the Big 12. He makes the same as our women's coach. We've offered to redo his contract, but he doesn't want to. He's has the same contract since 1990.

hmm that interview with Doh! was pretty intresting. Sounds like UNC wants the players to run the program. What a bunch of flakes, and the administration not being straight up jeez.

Doh is a fault for his firing. He alienated, former players, coachs ( Dean Smith a big no-no) and alums ( another big no-no) it got so bad that the parents of players met with Baddor (AD), if Doh had stayed he wouldn't have had a team next year , they'ed have all transferred. Now Doh may have been put in a few bad situations, he didn't exactly inherit UNC quality players, you can blame Gutheridge for that, but that is no excuse for making your players lives so miserable that they want to leave the UNC baskerball program, one of the most prestigious programs in the country.
Now with who will be the next coach? Your guess is as good as mine but it will be hard for Roy to turn down the job again when it is offered to him.

There's a who lot of blame to spread around. Baddour is all about self preservation instead of leadership & that's going to get him canned. Doherty was too stubborn in wanting to do things his way. Players are crybabies.

But as I said before, if Doherty made some better decisions away from the court, he'd still be coach. He carries the greatest blame.
