Re: Conference Reallignment: the Basketball edition

The presidents of the Big East's seven Catholic, non-Football Bowl Subdivision schools are expected to decide on their future in the Big East in the coming days, and it "would be an upset" if they remained in the league, sources told ESPN.

Looking more likely that the Basketball schools have the votes to dissolve the league since Temple can't vote on dissolving the league because they are only an associate member this year. UCONN and Cincy are basically begging the schools to stay because that might be the final blow to the tv deal. The value might go as low as 40 million leaving the schools with about 4 million per year per school. Even though basketball normally isn't worth a huge amount to tv deals, the Big East has programs that add a lot of value to the tv deals. With the loss of teams to the ACC and Big 10 the value of the tv deal is losing value daily. With all the money Boise would have to pay the Mountain West to leave and the Big West to put their Olympic Sports there, this may end up costing Boise to play football in the Big East.

If I was the Basketball schools I'd do it. Everybody else was doing what was in their best interest and didn't give a flying flip about them and left them unstable. UCONN was a real ACC contender and Cincy tried to get Urban Meyer to lobby the ACC and now they are begging them to stay. The Basketball schools would be morons to give up the leverage they have at this point and now have the ability to make their own path and maybe make the 2nd best basketball league after the new ACC.

Seven non-FBS football playing members of the Big East will break away from the conference, Gary Parrish reports.

And.... there goes the Big East. Hopefully Temple can figure something out because I doubt UCONN or Cincinnati will stick around if they can move on. I would be surprised if the top teams from the A-10 didn't merge with the Big East basketball only schools now.

Unrelated but I can't blame Maryland for going to the Big 10 conference given that their athletic department has been losing money and would probably have to cut sports otherwise.

Re: Conference Reallignment: the Basketball edition

UConn is super ****ed for now. Rumors are that the Catholic schools want to keep UConn and Cincy for their Olympic sports and let them do whatever they wish with their football programs. I don't see an ACC invite coming unless their hand is forced by FSU or another football "power" leaving the league.

I don't care about college football so if we stick with the Catholic schools I'll be happy.

That's about the level of play they deserve to be on when it comes to football.

And I know the Catholic schools aren't happy with UConn and Cincy right now because they've been looking to leave for the longest now.

                Its official now...

The seven Catholic schools in the Big East have agreed to leave the conference, but Georgetown is not on board with the process of departure, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The only issue is how they leave now and who gets the Big East's history and rights. But the b-ball schools get to keep the automatic bid to the Big Dance, that is clear.

I kinda feel bad for the Big East...the whole conference is now going to cease to exist solely because of football.

No one is more saddened than me.

But the writing has been on the wall for a long time now.

I'm on the side of the basketball only schools and I really not want to lose the "Big East" name.

But I don't want anything to do with football even though it is the revenue driver.

More ADs would be wise to scrap their failing football programs because it is just a waste of money to keep them going. At least these bball schools are sticking to what's most important to them which I can respect.

Xavier, Butler and Saint Louis are locks. Creighton and Dayton would be next then Gonzaga and Saint Mary's are wild cards.

Very sad, but well overdue. This should have went down 8 years ago when realignment hit the first time. Man Big Monday with the Big East and ACC Wednesday were staples of my childhood.
