Re: The Official 2013 "Running Commentary of Every Single Game" Thread

If you guys don't mind, I want to take the time to say what a great year it was for Duke.

Going into the season I was as down as I can remember being. We were coming off the Lehigh loss. It came out that Dawkins would sit out the year. Seth Curry suffered his leg injury right before the season and some feared that he may miss the whole season. Plus I wasn't a big believer in Quinn Cook, so the PG situation was a question mark for the team. To make it the Elite 8 and lose to the clear cut best team in the country IMO, on the road basically, is nothing to be ashamed about. Some may not view this as a successful season for Duke, given that we didn't win the ACC regular season/tournament or make the Final Four but, making it past the Sweet 16 which has hunted us recently (05 vs MSU, 06 vs LSU, 09 vs Villanova, 11 vs Arizona), winning 30 games and sweeping UNC makes this a successful year in my eyes. It sucks our senior trio of Plumlee/Curry/Kelly didn't make the Final Four though. They're probably my favorite senior class ever (even over the Scheyer/Thomas/Zoubek class or the Smith/Singler one) because of the growth they had from role player/limited player/transfer in 2010 to a legitimate big man/do everything stretch 4/best player on the team in 2013. I'll miss those guys.

Also, Congrats on Louisville fans and the fans of the rest of the Final 4 teams. I think I have to pull for Louisville because I'm a fan of Pitino and the Louisville players. I also hope they win one for Kevin Ware.

Holy **** I finally saw the Ware injury. How does that even happen? Watching his teammate reaction was heart wrenching. I may have passed out if I was on the team. Some have posted photos from the arena of the gruesome contortion of his leg and I was just speechless. Tough break for that young man.

Just to clear things up regarding what I was saying about Syracuse and Michigan last night, I didn't mean for it to come off like I thought Syracuse would blow Michigan out or that Michigan sucks or anything like that. These are two very good teams that seem to be putting it together at the right time.

All I meant is that I like Syracuse's chances from a matchup standpoint. I think Syracuse has two or three matchups that they can exploit if they stay focused on the scouting report.

That doesn't mean I think Syracuse will blow Michigan out or anything like that. Michigan still has a very good chance to win as well, and if they do, I wouldn't be surprised.

BTW - I know most probably don't follow the women's tourney...but holy cow, what an upset with Louisville knocking off Baylor. Pretty incredible.

Brian Griner must be so mad today.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

If anybody can't stomach Kevin Ware's injury, just look at this. Speaks for itself.

The reaction from his teammates was really heart-wrenching....just crazy. Question for some of you who may know...in situations like that do the trainers/medical staff have something to immediately help for the pain? I know shock took over but he was on the court for 9 mins. Thats a long time to be in pain from something like that. I know no one expects that to happen as it was a freak accident but still with all the other painful injuries that are more frequent...just curious

Not sure. I've done CPR and shock treatment, but I don't know what you can do after that. Maybe administer painkillers, stop the bleeding, check for artery lacerations, etc. Basically I think you want to do everything necessary to make sure he gets to the hospital okay, which means stabilize.

I knew I shouldn't have watched that injury on youtube.

I'm in tears (not good ones)

I think for something that serious you would need something like morphine or just be knocked out by anesthesia, both of which I don't think you can use unless it's in a "controlled environment" (e.g. hospital, ambulance, etc).

I've never really understood why people have such a hard time watching injuries, to be honest. It's nasty, obviously, but I can watch it and not really have any averse reaction. I guess it just depends on the person.

For me it's difficult because I can imagine the pain, it makes it uncomfortable to watch

Apparently the doctors told Kevin Ware he'd be ready to play again by this October.

Can't give anything right away because in a situation like that where surgery may be required (definitely required in this instance obviously) because you can't have anything by mouth since that would delay surgery. So first things first they had to get him on a backboard so they could move him, once they have him on the stretcher and in the back of the ambulance is when they would put an IV in and they would definitely give him morphine at that point due to the extent of his injury.
