    Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

I played against the CPU on All-Star difficulty against the Cavs while I was the Raptors on 12min Quarters.

Great game out of the box, variety of shots taken by the CPU from 3pters, midrange shots and inside shot. I remember years past the CPU would spam the paint and at the end of the games the Points in the Paint for the CPU would be in the high 50s-60s but not anymore in 2K17. What I found though was that the CPU would taken a high volume of 3pters with a specific player (Kyrie took 13 attempts from beyond the arc) In real life players would attempt 5-6 3pters except if your name was Steph or Klay. If only the cpu would utilize more of a drive and pull-up from midrange shot that would make the game ultra realistic. Maybe this can be fixed with editing Kyrie's shooting tendency.

I also noticed that hook shots in the paint go in at a very high percentage. Jonas Valanciunas is good but he's not 9 out of 11 good with his made jump hooks that I attempted with him.

Substitutions are hard to make on the fly with the down D-Pad arrow then with the Right stick. I usually have to pause the game and make them in the pause screen. Also there's no way of making Substitions during a time-out unless you pause the game which is odd. I wished they have used the older substitution system in 2K15 which was easy and truly on the fly. Also wasn't able to adjust the advanced rotations for the CPU in quick games therefore you won't see ultra realistic substitution patterns and line-ups on the floor. (CPU Cavs had one point had Kyrie and Lebron resting on the bench together, they usually leave one or the other on the court if they need a breather) I also believe i saw the CPU Cavs substitute 3 players all at once but in real life, teams would substitute 1-2 players at a time unless it was a blow-out at the end of the game.

Other than the above 3 gripes I have with the game, NBA 2K17 is truly great and I believe it's the best Basketball SIM experience I have ever had in a video game thus far. Lots of realistic animations and reactions. Love the rebounding tip-ins and how smooth the shots are looking now.

Game-Play wise I would rate this game 9/10. (Hope they could release a patch for the CPU to make smarter and more realistic substitution in Quick Game mode and perhaps update the tendencies for certain players so they do not take double digit 3pt attempts with a Roster Update)

So no shot stick feedback in Freestyle or scrimmage mode? Went to scrimmage to practice shot stick timing and when I shoot it does not display.

Is there still severe input lag when playing online just like every 2k game?

Can you do custom online games with your own sliders and settings?

Can you actually use the triple threat jab step moves and chain them into an explosive quick first step (never seen this in a 2k game)?

How is player movement? In 2k15 they moved like tanks, but that got somewhat better in 2k16.

Are there actual and 1s now? I could play several games and only see a handful if any at all in some games.

I don't want to be one of those guys who comes off as a chronic complainer, so an addendum to this is that I'm enjoying the game in almost every other aspect. The game is very good. But...

One thing that's throwing me for a loop is the playcalling menu:

The plays assigned to left and right on the stick have the names of the plays written vertically. That's just not a good way to make it easy to read words. It's completely different than how we're used to reading pretty much everything, and it requires more focus to read the names, which takes away from your focus on the actual court.

Really? Out of the box it was still there. Was there an update to address the online input lag? When I played it was nothing like an offline game.

              Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

In addition to my last post about the playcall menu not being perfectly legible, I feel like I owe it to the devs to post my positive impressions as well.

Stephen Curry's layup package: The fact that he still has his high-arcing finger rolls, but it's not nearly as common (it would be like 9 out of every 10 layups with him) as last year is a very good thing. Plus the fact that floaters don't go unrealistically high on a regular basis. This also helps separate Curry from other players, since his high-arc layups go higher than most floaters, giving him an advantage in the game that he has IRL.

The "Quick Edit" option in the roster menu is amazing. The only criticism I can think of is that I wish I could do it for tendencies, too.

Dribbling is better than ever, but pretty much everyone already knows that.

I like the fact that they added a "Hall of Fame" tier for badges on top of Bronze/Silver/Gold, presumably for people who are arguably the best of all time at something. Separating the best of the best from everyone else is important, and it gives us the ability to really recreate the way players like Curry, Jordan, LeBron, etc. almost break the NBA like it's a video game.

The menus overall are also much easier to read, mostly the numerical ratings and tendencies. Not just in the main menus, but also in the Player Edit screen and the Substitution menu.

Game is amazing just like last year.

I feel like the differences are minimal. Madden improved more and was worth the money although it really had room to do that. NBA 2k the new controls are more fluid and gameplay tweaks but having a new story mode isn't really a selling point I overly like. The game is nearly identical to 2k15 with some minor tweaks a roster update and they've added new story modes the past few years. I feel like 2k is a great game but i wish there was more support for older titles. I don't see the need for the upgrade so much, more like I have to to get the new rosters to play online. NBA 2k is a solid game and continues to be every year. I feel like Madden got to that level this year. It's worth $60 if you don't have an older version but this game is not really worth buying every year any more.

For me the more I play the more changes I notice. I think 2k games, on the surface, can appear like minimal improvements but there are just do any little things I see that would never happen in past years.

I also think it depends on how much and how often you have played past games. I played nba 2k16 frequently since it released. In fact up until madden released I was still playing 2k16 often. As a result I think the changes are more noticeable. Something a small as a new bounce off the rim to something bigger like player movement is immediately noticeable to me.

Also, if you have the option, try going back to 2k15. I bet the differences will be more noticeable playing them back to back.

                  Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread

                  More play time this afternoon...

Aside from some video hitches, no dream team and freezes in My Career, I'm loving this game. More on that later...

So the big question is this. Can the best sports franchise in video game history continue it's historic run? Well sure it can. This is NBA 2K!!! I absolutely love this game.

If you have any interest in basketball, don't threat, you can never go wrong with NBA 2K. This game had a litttle teaser game before you bought it called

On the court NBA 2k17 is superb and you won't be disappointed. I really think it feels a lot differetn from 2k16, but in a good way. Long time fans of 2K can jump on in and certainly everyone here on operation sports. I'd say the controls and gameplay feel better than they do in 2k16. I feel more in control of everything, both offensively and defensively.

Shooting jumpers and the mechanics was a complaint for 2k16 by many and it looks like they ironed that out in 2k17. I love the new shooting meter (if you want it on) I think I'm going to keep it on for now, the release points of some my favorite players feels a bit different from 2k16.

Rebounding, the touch passes look amazing and the fancy passes, while sweet in 16, look even more incredible than ever. There's some sweet new post moves also ,but they can't be explained by vocabulary, you'll just have to see them for yourself and you will. Dunking, the emotion, it's all here and yes, this feels like a real NBA game. Defensively is my only main complaint in this game. The aggressive D doesn't seem to do anything. I have guys running around me left and right. Thankfully, the Help D seems more in sync than last year. And that point of emphasis really seems to finally be working. I'd recommend if you have trouble guarding a guy at the point, I'd say control a guy in the paint and rely on your inside D.

The graphics are pretty good. I'd say the courts look better than last year, not breathtaking or standout, but very good. The hardcore fans will probably pick on the lighting, the colors and the uniqueness of each venue, but I think overall, most will be pleased.

I still think 2k14 had the best looking courts and players, but 2k17 is no slouch. If this game took any cutback in the visuals, the player models skin looks like clay at times. That's about the only word I can use in the English language that can describe their skin. It's very subtle, and most won't really notice, but if you compare to like NBA 2k14, you will notice the skin just looks slightly off and just a dark gray at times. But it's not distracting and most won't care. But what they did focus on, was the smooth animations and the player physique and proportions. Durant's body finally looks like Durant's body, and guys like Green on Warriors is big and bulky as he should be. If your favorite player has a long wing span and long lanky arms, you're going to notice him next to a 250 pound Power forward.

The Legends are still there but where is the Kobe love? No new Lakers teams? He's on the cover! Blah. That Kind of bummed me out. That said, I didn't notice any new teams unfortunately from NBA 2k16. Sure, we still got the classic Bulls, Lakers, Celtics, etc. The last few years, fans have really been complaining on the look of the Legends, usually the complaints are because of their faces looking "not like their actual counterparts". I thought they looked just okay in NBA 16. You'll have that great looking Legend, then find a Legend that looks downright bad. Jordan has been off for years. When they made the transition to next gen, something happened. Jordan looks a little better this year. And thankfully Steve Kerr no longer looks like a Ken Doll. While we shouldn't nitpick so much, I'd like to ask 2K why the Legends don't receive more love as the current guys, because their faces look fantastic. The fans, eh. Still look like zombies. They show a little more animation and a bit more lively. But up close when you see them, they really don't look that much different.

Out of the box, you get the Dream Team although there must be a server issue because I can't access them yet. LOL. Bummer. But I'm sure I'll get to them soon. . Wahoo! It's nice having guys like Barkley, but it's too bad we don't have a team like the 76ers or the Suns when Barkley was with them, but having the Dreamteam back again is amazing and was one of my favorite parts of 2k13. While 1 team doesnt' make a game great, it is amazing having them on here, not to mention Team USA too. Time for a battle!

2K advertised authentic arena sounds and chants and I'm mildly impressed. No question, it's better than 2k16, but dosn't expect anything mind-blowingly awesome. They still use that generic PA announcer which I'm sure most of you will know. You'll recognize him. He's been in the game since 2k9! I don't mind him, but man, wouldn't it be nice to have an authentic PA announcer for each venue? The crowd noise is better than past games, but still, I'd say not great, just better.

Seems to be a little more interaction and emotion with things going on with the action. More cheers and more boos is pretty cool. It does add to the immersion. I need to play at some more venues around the league to determine if the chants and stadium sounds are truly authentic.

The game boasts 10 different commentators. I've only heard one different one in my play time so far, I think I ran into the usual, Kevin Harlan and I think the other guy was Brent Barry and Steve Smith. Honestly, Steve Smith should not commentate, he just needs to stick with halftime synopsises. Not a fan of Webber's commentary either.

Depending on where you play, you'll get a different guy along side with Harlan. It's pretty cool having the variance though. Not sure how deep the commentary is, but we shall see. The halftime show is still Shaq, Kenny and Ernie. Ehhh. You'd think with Barkley being on the Dreamteam they could get him to be in the halftime. Nope. Darn it.

NBA 2k continues to be the reason why I love being a gamer. 2k17 delivers the goods. I'm noticing some bugs however, my subs don't sub out until the next dead ball, and this is during a time out. The dream team is no where to be found and the video/cut scenes on My Career are freezing up on me, it doesn't freeze the game, it starts up again, but it's buggy. Other than that. Everything else seems to be great.

But overall package, this game brings the goods. NBA 2k is back. Time will tell if it will become the fan favorite of all time.

Prior to today everyone kept saying how awesome it looked, and I just could not see it in any of the vids. Even from the vids prior I thought the game looked very 2k16. Sure there is some new animations, but is it really a true new game, sans the roster update? I think in a week or two ppl will feel more like this.

That being said though, I think we're to the point where radical changes aren't needed. I'm not sure what more they can do or drastically change.

Madden felt a lot different this year because last year's iteration was absolute trash. 2k no longer has that type of room for growth anymore given how good it already is.
That's always my thing. I'm not sure what people want to be so radically different. There's only so much you can do and at this point there are things to be fixed and incremental changes to be made.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to play it at work today and right now I'm just watching games....it's the closest to the real NBA I've ever seen. It's as good out the box as 2k16 was with sliders so far as getting the numbers right and that's largely because the AI is playing more realistic basketball. They need more pull up mid-range but that may be fixable with sliders. I'm noticing the right go getting blocks, the right guys getting touched ect.

I put in ~2000 hours of 2k16 on the PC and I can say without hesitation that this is a better game right out the gate. Hopefully they don't patch it up and ruin it
                      -_- .

The only major improvements I can really see left are more explosiveness in player movement. There's still no replication for how ridiculously explosive say a Russell Westbrook is and how they can blow by guys on the first step from pure athleticism. They fixed verticals this year and it's glorious seeing Anthony Davis soar and Bogut barely getting off the floor.

Second passing is better but still too slow in some places. That two handed animation had to die a slow death.

Lastly players are too leisurely running plays. This undoubtedly ties into the explosiveness problem but that may be mitigated from editing acceleration and player speed.

I'm mad we can't edit the body types of draft classes and CAPs though -_- I want to make my Shaq bodied center

OG- Great job with the ACE defense! Plays a loy better than last year.

I am seeing one issue with the AI ACE when I'm controlling the Warriors. AI defenders seems to constantly want to run off their man and double team Steph, but the problem is they are running off of Klay and Durant to do so. The warriors will be hard to defend this year, but teams definitely will not be running off of Klay and Durant to double team.

(Playing on Superstar by the way)

Also, I'd love to get a breakdown of the new defensive settings and how they work. Particularly all of the pick and roll additions. Thanks!!

Very slow movement when trying to slide while guarding on the ball...

Signature shots are terrible for some players.. like EVERY cav player is bad. Lebrons not even close, jr wtf is that? Kyrie.. no.

Crowd improvement? I guess its improved because it couldn't get worse than last year but i hear the same default pa guy and tacky pa music since 2k11 when playing in cleveland. No specific arena sounds at all for them. Crowd didn't recognize the situation in any of my 3 games in the 4th quarter. Same stale responses.

That was another issue on my list. Very unfortunate. How about the passing? Is it quicker/snappier?

A little better. I like the jump pass and touch pass option but still a lot of dribbling and slightest contact makes the ball jar loose for an easy steal

passing animation looks awful imo. and too many overhead pass. nobody does overhead passes in the NBA anymore.
