This just reminded me. Wasn't there a sports game that was solely Franchise mode w/o the actual game (i.e. everything was simmed)? I think it was baseball.

Or maybe it was talked about but got canceled. This is going back say 15 years.

There are Tons of games like this? Manager games exist for several sports. draft Day sports Basketball is out There for Basketball. Football Manager for football/soccer.

Simply put, the ephemeral nature of an annual release + major annual changes to the playstyle = A Disruption in continuity, which results from a balanced video game. Which leads to a proportionally dissatisfied consumer base ultimately condemning an otherwise decent game.
(layman’s terms: there’s no balance because of new or different game mechanics every year.)

Other games do not face this challenge (i.e my earlier reference to Rockstar Games) because they do not have this cycle. 2K has refused to relent this business model for understandably capitalist motives — but what does that say for Rockstar’s game model which puts forth one game and continues to develop that game for YEARS, all the while continuing to make it ever more popular with relevant updates?

Starting around 2K15, I started thinking that 2K should put out a game every 2 years. Giving them time to truly improve (granted they do make improvements here and there every year). I know they never will though.

It isn't 2K's decision. It's the NBA (and every other sports league). It's in the contract.

You make it sound like they're consciously making a decision to release a game every 2-3 years for "quality purposes". NBA Live sucks...they're probably electing to eat the fine(s) versus losing money due to production/development costs and marketing. Long story short...it's probably cheaper for them to pay the fine(s) and licensing fee versus releasing a game every year. Let's be real. They only release a game to test the waters of their product against NBA 2K. I'm surprised they haven't ended the NBA Live series already and not renew their agreement.

What's there to apologize about? It's pretty much black and white why the game is released every year. Then there's the common sense answer. 2KSports is getting paid releasing the game every year. Why would they forgo a year's worth of profit for a 2-year cycle????

Also, NBA Live is not this biblical savior of basketball or future competition to NBA 2K. They had their many chances and blew it!

They are just little kids that have no idea how the real world works lol.

I mean they release the game every year and make a lot of money with it.

There is no incentive business wise to diver from this successful business model lol

Doubt take 2 is going to accept it.
Not to mention they already have other franchise that are not on an annual release.

Then there is even all the contractual and legal obligations that are involved.

I have never understood why the people who feel like each year is just a roster update (or money grab) dont just skip a year or two. That way the game does feel like it's two years (or more) advanced when they play it because it really would be. I personally look forward to the yearly sport game releases.

This makes sense for single-player types. Less so for social players who’d have to convince their network to keep playing the old game.
