Ohio State lost TWICE last night

Ohio State has been performing about as well as expected led by the junior star forward Mario Cook. Last night though, the Buckeyes realized that things would not be the same for at least a couple of months. During an out of conference matchup against Northern Iowa, Ohio State’s star player was unintentionally undercut by forward Landon Webb and broke his arm as he attempted to break his fall. According to team doctor’s Cook will be out a total of 6 to 8 weeks. During this time they will look for their two freshmen (forward Maverick O’Brien and Defensive mastermind guard J’Marcus Sellers) to step up.

Forward Landon Webb scored 41 points for Northern Iowa in the 81 – 76 win over Ohio State.

Raymond Cooper is not happy with his teammates

Although the Oklahoma State Cowboys were not included in the preseason top 25, many people still expected big things from the team simply because they have one of the best players in the nation. Unfortunately, they have not started off the season the way they have wanted to. Cooper has put up big numbers but the rest of the team has simply not been doing much to support him.

Cooper has usually been a quiet guy when it comes to criticizing teammates but when he finally had the opportunity to speak about the team’s season up to this point he did not bite his tongue. “I’m sick as s*** of feeling like I’m doing this by myself” Cooper said to a reporter. “I’m not telling people to get better. I’m just telling people to f***** try. Show some effort. It’s not that hard”.

The team is currently 5 – 4 with a rough schedule once they get to January.

The freshman that no one seems to be talking about

So far, this year has seen a large amount of freshman that have shown up on campus at their respective schools and completely taken over. One of those players is not getting the type of attention that he probably deserves because he doesn’t put up a ton of points or throw down emphatic tomahawks. Connecticut freshman point guard Taurean Montana is making a case for himself right now as one of the best point guards in the land. Montana is currently third in the nation in assists but the kid seems to be getting better every game. Don’t be surprised to see this kid bolt for the NBA the first chance that he gets.

The Cincinnati Bearcats have really fallen as of late

Those of you that followed last year know that less than one year ago, Cincy was home to the player of the year and one of the best players the NCAA has seen. They were also in the final four playing for the right to face Temple in the National Championship game. Less than a year later, Christopher Sapp is gone, star point guard Adrian Benoit is gone and now their starting center Hakeem Eden has just been kicked off of the team after sexual assault allegations.

The team has stated that his removal from the team is not based solely off of this allegation but a series of incidents. When asked about his future Eden quickly stated “Gonna try to make it professionally”. His chances of getting drafted are looking extremely slim.

Ohio State’s J’Marcus Sellers is really taking on that leadership role

I don’t think that many will disagree when I say that the best way to lead is by example. J’Marcus Sellers is really showing us a bit of that as he has truly stepped up his game in the absence of star Mario Cook. Sellers was inserted in to the starting lineup at the beginning of the season to do one thing…. Stop the opposing team’s best perimeter player. Sellers did an excellent job of that but he is really starting to show that he can excel on the offensive side of the ball as well. In last night’s win against Temple, Sellers scored a team high 19 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. More impressive however is that he held Temple’s best player SG Demi Welch to 1 – 9 and a total of 4 points.

It will be interesting to keep an eye on Sellers because if he develops even a little bit of an offensive game, he will become a top 10 pick worthy immediately.

Duke player taking leave of absence

Jeremy Prince is the starting center on what many consider to be the best team in the nation so of course it makes news when it is determined that he will be leaving the team for an undetermined period of time.

Duke’s sophomore center Jeremy Prince has been playing below expectations all year and many have been speculating that something is wrong. This morning, Duke announced that while Prince is still a part of the team, he will be taking a leave of absence from the team for “personal reasons”. While Prince is gone, he will be replaced in the starting lineup by freshman center Arrius Gray. If Gray is as good as advertised, he may run Prince right out of that starting lineup.

And for Christmas I give you……

A team to keep a eye on for the rest of the season. Last year guard Darren Williams took the Horizon league by storm as he catapulted himself in to my Big Board 100. This year, they get freshman guard Tyrone Flowers who appears to be even BETTER than Williams. When you put the two of them together what do you get? You get a 13 – 1 team that looks ready to kill. May I also mention that the one game that they did lose Darren Williams was out and Flowers was in foul trouble. Believe me when I say that this team is real and these two players are LEGIT NBA prospects. Keep your eyes open.
