Congratulations to Jabaar Wilson, the sophomore out of Kansas who took him Player of the Month for the month of December. Now, on to January.

Amazing Freshman won’t be around for long

As we discussed last month, Ohio State freshman J’Marcus Sellers has really taken on the leadership role since the team lost their star Mario Cook to a broken arm. Sellers has been on a bit of a hot streak as of late and continues to be one of the best defensive players in the entire country.

When asked about his future at Ohio State, he bluntly stated that he wanted to make the best of this year because he “won’t be around for long”. After the comments started to receive a lot of attention from fans, Sellers said “I apologize if I offended anyone with my comments but I just wanted to be honest. I love Ohio State and cherish the time that I am spending here with my Buckeye family”.

Also, PF Mario Cook is scheduled to return at the end of the month and hopes to play in the team’s conference game against the Michigan Wolverines.

The Aikens brothers are the real deal

There are many brothers that play in the NCAA and NBA together. It is rare however that you get a group of triplets as good as the Aikens. D’Juan, D’Shaun and D’Quan were the talk of California as high school players. The three brought three state championships and many offers from many D-1 schools. Towards the end of the school year, the three had verbally agreed to attend the university of USC. Two months after the announcement, D’Shaun announced that he would be going to the University of California instead stating that he wanted to blaze his own trail. Both of his brothers were very supportive of his decision.

Now that the three are in the NCAA, it is no surprise that all of them have been very productive. It is no surprise that D’Shaun has been more productive at California since he is the go to guy there. We are unsure of whether or not the brothers will be declaring this year but the way things are looking, they will all be first round picks.

Texas is looking even better than they did last year

Texas surprised a lot of people when they made it to the National Championship game last year behind stars J.R. Stafford and Derrick Long. The team knew they were in good shape when both decided to return to school but they could not have imagined that the freshman Jarrien Bailey would be even better than the two them. The “three amigos” are taking the NCAA by storm and have recently surpassed the Duke Blue Devils to take over the number one spot in the polls.

The three have great chemistry and are a strong favorite to return to the National Championship game. Interestingly enough, this will probably be the one and only year that the three of them will play together as it unlikely that all three of them will return to school once again]

Miami sophomore Shaun Boyd says he’s not sure if he is ready for the NBA

Shaun Boyd is quickly becoming a house hold name as he has been lighting up the score board all around the country. When asked if he was considering declaring for the draft after this year Shaun Boyd had this to say:

“It’s so easy for a player to just say yes to the NBA. Most players do it because of the money and that is understandable. More players need people around them that are going to tell the truth and let them know if it will realistically be worth leaving school. I have been able to not only assess my own ability but hear from others what I need to work on. As it stands, they are saying that I would be a mid to late second round pick if I leave. I need to stay for another year and work on my craft and then we can revisit this again”.

There you have it folks. Do not expect Shaun Boyd to enter this year’ draft.

Let’s look at the High School top 150 list

I really like this batch of high school kids this year. Unlike last year, none of the guys at the top have any legal or character issues. Heavy with point guards, I think we are really looking at some NBA stars on this list. Check it out at the link below.

There are a bunch of guys that could realistically go number 1 in the draft

This is one of those years where there is no definitive number one. Everyone has gone back and forth regarding who the number one pick should be. Realistically, there are more than a few guys that no one would be surprised to see go number 1. I will guide you through that list to help you make a decision if YOU are that GM with one of those top picks.

        1)
        Player: Jarrien Bailey
        Position: Power Forward
        Height: 6’9”
        Weight: 243
        School: Texas
        Class: Freshman
Is He Leaving: 50% chance Bailey is leaving. He is really enjoying his teammates and the college atmosphere. He appears to have a great relationship with J.R. Stafford and Derrick Long so no one really knows what he is going to do.
Why Draft Him so High: Because Bailey is so versatile. He is listed as a power forward but can easily play small forward. At 6’9 243, Bailey can score in the post, shoot the rock and handle the rock well for a forward. Of course he will need to get stronger but that is no major concern for him right now. He already has a great skill set and has a lot of room to get even better.

        2)
        Player: Landon Webb
        Position: Small Forward
        Height: 6’8”
        Weight: 224
        School: Northern Iowa
        Class: Freshman
Is He Leaving: 25% chance Webb is leaving. Although Webb’s stock can not get much higher than it already is, Webb has always had that mentality of “the NBA will be there when I’m ready for it”. Webb is a different kind of person. He should be playing at a major Big Ten school but had no problem turning them all down to be closer to his family. I don’t expect to see him entering this draft.
Why Draft Him so High: Because Webb is an extremely gifted scorer. A lot of people may see the “white guy that can shoot” and automatically start the unfair comparisons. Webb is not any of those guys as he has the ability to create his own shot and is also a very good distributor as well.

        3)
        Player: Elijah Diggs
        Position: Small Forward
        Height: 6’8”
        Weight: 208
        School: Georgia
        Class: Freshman
Is He Leaving: 45% chance of Diggs leaving. Diggs is a son to parents that are extremely big on education. They want him to stay in school all four years but there is always the possibility that he can take classes while in the NBA ala Vince Carter and many others. The question here will be who will influence him more…. Parents or that cash money.
Why Draft Him so High: Because Diggs is an athletic freak. Diggs started his freshman campaign well but he didn’t make as much noise as some of the other guys on this list. Diggs has recently started letting everyone know who he is with big Sportscenter plays and highlights. What I like about Diggs is that he does not play erratic and out of control and he doesn’t fit the current mold of the “raw, athletic freak”. I honestly feel like he is more of a safe pick than many may give him credit for.

        4)
        Player: Desi Richardson
        Position: Shooting Guard
        Height: 6’5”
        Weight: 216
        School: Indiana
        Class: Freshman
Is He Leaving: 75% chance of Richardson leaving. I don’t have any inside info but rumor has it that he won’t be here long.
Why Draft Him so High: Because all Richardson knows how to do is points up on the board. Can he shoot? Check. Get to the basket? Check. Score at the basket? Check. He can do it all on offense. No he does have a lot to learn as he makes a lot of mistakes but I think that Richardson (along with Morrison) may have the biggest ceiling of the guys listed.

        5)
        Player: Marvekious Morrison
        Position: Center
        Height: 7’2”
        Weight: 335
        School: Washington
        Class: Freshman
Is He Leaving: 99% percent chance of Morrison leaving. Morrison has pretty much made it known that college was just a stepping stone to the NBA. No surprises here.
Why Draft Him so High: Because Morrison is absolutely huge and punishing. Morrison is one of the biggest prospects that we have seen in years but he still has the ability to move like someone about 60 pounds lighter. Morrison has to develop a better variety of post moves but Morrison can be great if he drops the attitude and learns to work hard.

        6)
        Player: DeAndre Gervin
        Position: Small Forward
        Height: 6’8”
        Weight: 232
        School: Eastern Michigan
        Class: Senior
Is He Leaving: 100% chance. He’s a senior.
Why Draft Him so High: Because Gervin is experienced and has shown the country what he is capable of on numerous occasions. Gervin has been around for what seems like forever and to put it bluntly, you know what you are going to get from this guy. Gervin is the type of guy that is almost sure to give you solid numbers year in and year out and be a perennial All Star.

        7)
        Player: J.R. Stafford
        Position: Shooting Guard
        Height: 6’6”
        Weight: 208
        School: Texas
        Class: Sophomore
Is He Leaving: 50% percent chance of Stafford leaving. It is hard to tell at the moment and I believe a lot of it will depend on what teammates Derrick Long and Jarrien Bailey decide to do.
Why Draft Him so High: Because Stafford is an athletic shooter that continues to get better. Believe it or not, while Stafford does not have the ceiling of some of the other guys, I think that he is the safest pick out of all of these guys. You can continuously see him get better each game. He rarely makes mistakes and he is absolutely a team player that always puts the team first. He won’t be a franchise player or superstar but you will definitely get a very good player guaranteed with this guy.

Since we are talking about the draft, let’s look at the Big Board

Below is the link to the big board. Of course, it has not been determined which of these players will be declaring and which will not but we have a nice batch of players at the top. Generally I rate players on a scale of A+, A, A-, B+ etc. This year however, I decided to only rate the players with an A, B, C, D or F rating to make it a bit more difficult to determine how close one player is to the next. Take a look.

Who is this month’s player of the month? You decide!

                1)
