okay, i've been as frustrated with this aspect of the game as anyone else over the past 7-10 days. last night i was getting blown out as usual, with the CPU Mavericks coming down, making one or two passes and getting a free layup. of course i was pissed and i started replaying every back door, looking for any possible solution while my wife was going on and on about some house she wants to buy.
then i decided to look in the coach settings for whatever reason and noticed a new option this year - i can't remember exactly what it says, but i think it says "Display who to guard" or something like that. it's in the same place with the options to have the CPU call plays, and display the play art and so on. now, i never noticed this option last year. maybe it was there and i just didn't notice it, but i played a ton of games last year and never saw it.
with that in mind, i went back into the game and noticed that, at all times, one of the CPU players has a blue circle underneath him. usually it was jason kidd when they inbounded the ball but sometimes it would change to dirk and i even saw brandon bass. sometimes, it would switch during the play, maybe to josh howard or terry or someone else. so, i interpreted this to mean that the guy with the circle was the guy that the coach option "show who to guard" was referring to, and consequently i started guarding the guy that had the circle, no matter where the ball was or what else was happening. believe me, it took a little "faith" to stick with it. after being burned so many times, you really want to click on in the post when a big man gets the ball down there.
the difference in my teammates' defense was just unbelievable. there was one play where kidd was trying an entry pass to dirk on the block, and mike finley left his man at the 3 point line as the ball was in the air and made the steal. i have never seen this kind of defense in any 2k game. i will post this to 2k share when my internet is back up. dirk got the ball and drove on matt bonner, and kurt thomas came over and swiped it, and another time dirk drove under the rim but bonner played good d and dirk missed a 2 foot shot. another time, dirk got the ball on the elbow and tried to shoot over oberto, and oberto blocked the shot all on his own. all these plays i'm describing, they were CPU controlled defenders making the play. i made an effort to stick to the guy with the circle under him, no matter who had the ball.
the most amazing thing was that even when they scored, it was from their legit offense and not some sorry backdoor cut. also, it was still difficult to play d (maybe more difficult) because you had to pay attention to where the circle was, and then you had to switch and still play good d, whether on the perimeter or in the post. it definitely added a new dimension to playing defense. sometimes i got burned anyway but like i said it was from legit offense, like a howard drive, or dirk just making a jumper.
now, by the time i realized this i was already getting blown out by the cpu, so i don't know what effect their momentum may have had on what was happening. also, my wife wouldn't quit yapping about the house so i only got to play a quarter using this technique. it may be that if you guard the guy with the blue circle the way you're "supposed to", your CPU teammates play better. you also may be able to turn this off and the game won't "expect" you to guard a certain guy and defense will seem more normal if you just play d the way you always have. i'm definitely going to do some more testing on this but i'm curious if the guys who aren't having these problems turned this off. for the guys that are seeing the backdoor stuff, give this a shot and let me know what you find.
