Its not NBA Jam, and the game should have a learning curve. I think its time to stop selling hoops games so short and allow them to evolve. One of the major issues with NBA Live 10 was that when it released people complained of it being too hard because you had to play manual defense, so they took that out and it ruined the game with extra suction and a bunch of other crap as a result.

Thats just much more to swallow than it is learning to take an angle or take a few feet towards the guy you want to pass too.

I agree with the OP, 2k doesnt need to hear out every single whine about the game being too hard if the majority is enjoying it. Being hard never stopped them from playing anything else from Splinter Cell to Super Mario Bros.
My point exactly! I have NEVER heard anybody complain that Halo is too difficult or that Splinter Cell needs patches to keep the enemy AI from doing "intelligent" things within the game....but all of the sudden when a sports game, which should be easier once you actually learn the controls, begins to challenge them....the whining begins...

Gotta agree with the OP. I have had to catch myself with my complaints on some aspects of the game. Last night I had a zen moment and am playing the game MUCH better now.

Learn the controls, learn your players, learn how to use the adjustments they give you to control your team. If you do these things the game really shines.
I am happy playing the game on All-Star default and no slider adjustments. I have been getting beat a lot but its nothing were I feel like something is wrong with the game. The game is fine. Not perfect, but good out the box.

I think the problem is that there are too many people with short attention spans who play video games. If they have to actually take the time to learn how to play the game then they say "screw it, back to MW2". Unlike NBA2K11, MW2 requires ZERO concentration or learning curve and is completely mind numbing. I taught my girlfriend how to play that game in 30 minutes and she was getting 10+ kills a game. Never played an FPS in her life.

I admit when I first play an NBA2K game I absolutely SUCKED at them. But I didn't get on forums and complain about it. I just played more and got better, eventually having to up the difficulty level. Though this game does have some things I would like fixed (such as the AI in My Player), but I don't want the game dumbed down. They put sliders and game styles in the game for a reason!

Now I'm hearing that the roster update didn't fix anything, but just reset the sliders and difficulty to default?

Someone PLEASE confirm if this is true, because if so, all the people who were praising the "patch" have been exposed. If all the patch did was put them on an appropriate difficulty level that they were too proud to try (but gave them an experience they saw as better or more "sim") then that says something.

Man, the OP's post really hit the nail on the head. I couldn't agree more as I said in another thread this is why NBA 2k11 and The Show are my favorite sports games...and the reason is because I do NOT win every game. Like many others have said we have been so spoiled in the past with more or less arcade games that made us feel invincible that when a couple of actual SIM style games come along that has AI that can actually defeat us, everybody cries foul. Or in some cases, for instance with The Show, actually give up on the game altogether claiming that the game is broken because it is too difficult or they can't do what they could in past games.
I love both of these games, my record is 9-16 in my association and it feels great! I haven't felt cheated once either. This time last year I would have either been undefeated or 24-1 at the worst. I really hope they do not dumb down this game, I will be sure not to download a patch or roster update if that is the case.
                    Again, great post OP

I don't post here too often, but I felt I needed to reply to the original post.

Personally, I'm torn with this argument.

Back in the day, when you bought a game, that was it. Whatever bugs were there were stuck in there and you had to live with it. Now, with the cut throat nature of gaming and the ridiculous time constraints on development cycles, game producers and development teams have gotten away with being able to release products that aren't technically done and fix them after the fact in order to capitalize monitarily. And with this expectation from us, we have BOTH created the current culture of gaming.

Now, with developers being able to send updates and patches, we and the developers have taken advantage of this luxury to be able to "fix" what might be "broken". Games can afford to be released with errors and patched later. Mistakes can be fixed and people now have a platform to point out errors quicker and more specifically then 1 or 2 developers can on specific aspects of the game. This technology is great and can make a bad game into a decent game (see Backbreaker)

But with this power comes the responsibility of knowing when to stop messing with something.

The issue is where is that line? The answer lies in the middle somewhere and unfortunately, with the devs trying to tow the grey line and make EVERYONE happy, everyone eventually becomes unhappy. The community can spur great action and change (NBA Elite 11) but can also add feedback where it isn't needed. One part of the game that you might LOVE might be LOATHED by someone else.

In the end, 2k has one job, and that's to SELL GAMES. Technically, once they have your money, their obligation to you as the customer is completed and I think if more people took that approach, then sports games wouldn't be a raging ball of inconsistency. They delivered the product and any extra that we might get is indeed an extra. The problem is that too many people have come to EXPECT this because developers have reassured them that any mistake will be fixed. With this expectation, people feel that they can constantly ask for tweaks and fiddle with a game in order to not only fix bugs and errors, but to make the game customizable and perfect for them.

I applaud 2k for listening to the community, lord knows so many other publishers and developers don't. But we tend to forget that they are indeed extending a service that isn't required. We should be more responsible and think hard about what we deem to be "broken" before we jump too far. But at the same time developers should release games with strong enough conviction that what they have released is ready for consumption THE WAY THAT IT IS. Anything outside of that should be seen as a perk and courtesy, not a requirement.

Obviously if 2K has made changes, I don't know if it's soley OS to blame, and thats why I'm torn. OS does more harm than good in my opinion and I dont think we can blame the community for voicing opinions that more often than not help games.

Check out my latest blog: X-Factor: How a Simple Roster Update Drastically Changed 2K11's Gameplay

This should give some insight any questions about how the game changed so much just from a roster update.

Hey guys, try playing the game again. It might just be this particular game but suddenly, it feels right again. It seems there is contact in the paint again and finishing at the rim is not as frequent as it was the past 2 days. I want to see if any of you notice the same thing....

It's not that passing is too hard, it's just balanced poorly. Too many steals, not enough deflections out-of-bounds, and way too many difficult passes are being completed by players with poor pass/hand ratings.

The sim sliders are also really bad. And I see a bunch of people using them, that's gotta be a huge source of the complaints.

And on and on like that.

Whatever is in this roster update hasn't addressed any of these root problems.

                                ------------------------
I see many deflections out of bounds and players with poor pass/hand rating can't even pass on a teammate just 2m away or dribble with success.I see this all the time in my Knicks association.I've played pro basketball and that's how passing is in real life basketball. You need to make the perfect pass, the receiver must help the passer by moving away from his matchup to receive the pass or else the defender will punish every little mistake.Use total control passing. That's why 2k has total control passing this year.Just watch Czar's video explaining the passing system.
Well, you're lucky you're not seeing what I'm seeing, because I'm a beast in this game and I can do some ridiculous passing with almost anyone in the game.

I rarely turn the ball over anymore because passes are too accurate.

Maybe I'm just too good lol and I should shut up and let you jabronis play this great game
