Re: NBA 2K12: The Official Association/Online Association Thread

Playing the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. I've had teams get hot and hit 10 or so threes against me, but I've never had a team do what the Knicks did to me. After going 7/14 from three in the first half, they somehow came out even hotter in the second half, and went 7/8 from three in the third quarter. They finished the game 15/27 from three and Toney Douglas turned into a Ray Allen/Reggie Miller hybrid, going 9/15 from three. Dropped 33 points and dished out 7 assists. Unbelievable.

Somehow, I still won. After Carmelo hit a 20-foot jumper to put the Knicks ahead 120-119 with about 7 seconds left in the game, I drilled a pull-up jumper from the FT line with Kyrie Irving with 4 seconds to go to win 121-120.

Kyrie Irving is such a stud. He hit the game winner and went for 32 points and 12 assists. This was game two and, in game one, he went for 32 points and 11 assists.

Re: NBA 2K12: The Official Association/Online Association Thread

Started a Kings Association. Building around DeMarcus Cousins. If we weren't going to make the playoffs the first year, I decided to 'tank'. Traded Tyreke since I didn't like his need for so many shots, inefficiency and play-style. Also wanted to free up Terrence Williams and Marcus Thornton offensively.

Kings Trade: Tyreke Evans, Hassan Whiteside
Wizards Trade: '12 1st Round Pick, Nene

We finished last in the league, which is what I planned to do. Cousins made the All-Star Team and All-NBA Third Team (16.8 PPG/9.7 RPG)

The Wizards pick had the third highest odds of becoming the #1 pick. Ended up with the #1, #3 and #22 pick, via the Warriors.

        ===

I know for certain I'm drafting Anthony Davis first, but from there, MKG is always drafted but that leaves Robinson as the next best pick...

Should I pick Bradley Beal, or trade the 3rd pick...? Who should I trade the pick for? Roster:

        Isaiah Thomas
        Marcus Thornton
        Terrence Williams
        Anthony Davis
        DeMarcus Cousins

        6th Man: Nene
Canucks | Packers | Blue Jays | Lakers | Raptors

Re: NBA 2K12: The Official Association/Online Association Thread

I'm in year 5 of my Bulls association and it's starting to get stale because it feels like I'm playing the same game over and over: The CPU will have some guy go 12 for 18, both teams will go through hot and cold streaks at the same time and, the score will be within 5 points with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Most of the teams in the league have a rating from 80 to mid 90's, I'm guessing because every top 5 lottery pick is great, and there's no difference in playing the best team in the league or the worst.

It kinda sucks because I built a team that I love but the games are so predictable that it feels like I'm following a script. Think it's time to start a new run.

Just to make the deal work. I drafted Anthony Davis with my #1 pick. (tanking works in 2K!). Looking to unload a couple players; we've become too deep, ironically, and players are complaining of playing time BEFORE the season starts (during pre-season). Terrence Williams is looking like Iguodala, Marcus Thornton is dropping 18 PPG, and the frontcourt duo of Cousins/Davis is causing hell for opponents.

These are the players I want to trade: (15-man roster)

                Isaiah Thomas
                Jrue Holiday
                Nene
                Chuck Hayes
                Travis Outlaw

I'm not sure if trying to add a young star at PG is the right way to go...though 5 scorers could work, since T-Will is more of the 14/6/5 player on our squad, and Cousins and Davis are crazy efficient. Trade Opinions?:

                Kings Trade: Nene
Mavs Trade: Brendan Wright, '13 1st Round Pick

Kings Trade: Travis Outlaw, Chuck Hayes
                Heat Trade: Shane Battier

Kings Trade: Isaiah Thomas, Jrue Holiday, Bradley Beal
Nuggets Trade: Ty Lawson, Rudy Fernandez

                -or-

Kings Trade: Isaiah Thomas, Jrue Holiday, Bradley Beal, Francisco Garcia
Bucks Trade: Brandon Jennings, Ekpe Udoh

...should I go for Lawson, Jennings, or some other PG?

That front court of Hibbert and Aldridge is spectacular, and to top it off Rudy Gay at the 3, that is a great lineup. I would have liked a more facilitating PG though. Williams and Teague aren't really great passers. Louis Williams should get some opportunities with the three ball will the two big men on the block, (except 2k botched the double team in this version).

I'm curious, what playbook are you going to use?, or are you creating your own?

Definitely trade for SF. IMO, you should have gotten Jennings instead of Lawson, but either way is fine.

Yes, this can really become a problem against some teams. It seems like a lot of people haven't quite figured out how to deal with this so maybe the following will help. But first off know that defense is a push and pull world. Strategically you take away something from a team but give them something else. There's no avoiding that. If a team starts raining threes on you though, here's what you can do:

                            1. Get a defensive lineup on the floor.

Duh, right? Well a lot of people want to feel like they can just keep pace with the other team through an offensive point barrage instead of battening down the hatches and weathering the storm. If you focus on defense and get a hot shooter to miss two shots or more in a row he gets cold and you can begin to end their run by taking shooters out of rhythm one guy at a time.

                            2. Change your defensive settings.

Set On-ball for the guys shooting threes to "play tight" and off-ball to "deny ball." If there's one guy doing all the damage also set his double team to "always." For perimeter players go to their "screen" and "hedge" settings and make them "go over" and "hard hedge" respectively. This is the most aggressive but you can mix and match ideologies depending on the offensive player; you can hard hedge and go under the screen which is essentially sort of a switch; you can go over the screen and no hedge which leaves you briefly vulnerable for a quick shot off the screen but if it's against a fast penetrating guard who will attack the rim keeping your big back with a no hedge will contain that drive attempt...

                            3. Change your coaching profile.

There are two settings that can help stem a three pointer tide. Up your coaches defensive pressure setting. I'm not (necessarily) saying boost it to 99 but you want to give these shooters a healthy dose of pressure and run them off the three point line. You can also change your help defense. This setting is basically how likely other players on your team are to leave their man to run over to some other offensive player. If this is set really high the moment a defensive player looks like they've been beat off the dribble or caught behind a screen another guy on his team will help out. This is a delicate balance to be struck a because set too high your players will start switching and helping like crazy leaving a lot of people open and against teams with good ball movement you can get burned.

So ask yourself "how are they getting open for these threes?"
-Are they passing to open guys because my teammates are helping each other out too much? Turn help defense down so they don't leave their guys so often.
-Are they having big men set pin downs (picks coming "down" from a big man on a perimeter player's defender typically hanging out under the basket to "pin them down low while the perimeter player runs out to the wing) for shooters who use them to spring free and pop to the three point line? Turn it up so your defender whos man sets the pick down low will follow the shooter off of it.

                            ---

Like I said, this is all push and pull because making these changes are going to leave you vulnerable to pump fakes and quick drives. So if you do this you may see these perimeter players start to get into the paint. The point is it's a chess match. If they're nailing from deep do this stuff to stop it, then if they adjust you need to adjust back. Its all about which side is able to identify what the other is doing faster and make the appropriate changes quickly. You can really make your team better defensively just by paying attention to what is happening. You don't need to be the best on-, off- or post- defender to still manage a great defensive team.

I hope this helps people. If anyone has more questions or wants to just discuss the game and it's settings feel free to send me a message or post here or start a thread and let me know, etc

Just started an 82 game association (will sim many games) with the Cavaliers. I amn't too worried about winning this season. I'm tanking for the Draft. Anthony Davis + Kyrie Irving =

I made this trade for draft picks. Is it fair?

Bobcats trade '12 1st round and '13 1st round to Cleveland for '13 2nd round, Omri Casspi and Anthony Parker.

I then signed Joey Graham, Roger Mason, Mehmet Okur and Sherron Collins to cheap contracts.

Am I much making progress guys?
