Coach2K, I appreciate the time you took into making that post, and I'll definitely look into it. A lot of what you posted is already my strategy though.

I definitely do icon passing, nearly exclusively. And in past games, my go to play was the pick-n-roll, but unfortunately, for some reason in this game I can't get Dwight Howard to "roll". He sets the pick, I use it, and then he bounces out behind the 3 point line, obviously where I don't want him to be. And the times that he does cut in towards the basket, I try to icon pass into him and it gets stolen, or instead of going for a dunk, he does some ridiculous fadeaway jumper. I do try to feed him in the post, and I do have some success, but not tons.

I have also gone into practice mode, and studies what different types of shots, moves, and abilities my guys are good at. I know that JJ Redick is "good" at a stepback jumper, so I try to set him up for catch and shoot 3's, or try to set up a quality step back. Ryan Anderson is also good at stepbacks, so I try to get him some quality mid and long ranger jumpers, and step backs. Jameer Nelson is good on the pull up jumper, which gives me some quality looks if I can get him open on a pick. And Jason Richardson is rated good at fadeaways, so I try to get him on some fadeaways. It all works sometimes, but not even close to regularly.

And I definitely try to run plays also. I have plays set up designed to get Redick wide open 3's, get Nelson open off of picks for some open pull up 3's, set Dwight up in the post, etc... Same thing.

Like I said, I feel like I'm close, I've been able to keep the scores close for a good chunk of the game, but inevitably every game there's a point where the CPU just swells the lead, and nothing I try works. But I'll take a look at some of your suggestions and see what I can get.

It's good to hear that you are doing a lot of those things. The one thing that I've discovered about the game is that just when I think I've learned what I can about the game, something else triggers a moment when I gain a better understanding of how to win.

The only way that happens is by playing tons of games and that's probably the only ingredient missing for a lot of people and maybe for you as well.

I also play my association on all-star; what kills me is 2K's logic is terrible!

No teams plays like themselves; it seems who ever I am guarding the CPU tries to score on me 70% of the time.

Players who shot tendency is below 40 shoots 10+ shots.

Your teammates rarely plays defense and can't stop the CPU, so many pump fakes that freeze the defense plus they score with the up and under.

I lowered all my shot sliders to reduce the CPU from shooting a high percentage but didn't work.

You will have to almost control everybody on your team to win. I had to turn my shooting fouls up to 93 because the CPU fouls the user and there is rarely any fouls.

When the CPU is running and you can't hit a layup a lot of it is because they don't call fouls when there should be a foul called.

If your shooting fouls is below 90 the CPU will steal and block your shots through your body all the time.
          True bout my business, Mane!

if hes fading to the 3 point line then youre holding the pick button for too long.

Yeah, Coach2k is right. If you study your team's abilities and learn how to play the game, default sliders are fine for most people. The only problem I found is that on Pro the game seemed too easy with standard sliders and on All-Star I found it too difficult. That is why I stuck with All-Star with mid & 3pt shooting slider modifications. Works great even if you don't change anything else (apart from the foul sliders).

Another thing that I found it helps is modifying the playbook by removing any plays that get broken easily. Easy to do if you tend to play with 1 or 2 teams all the time.

Well I just had Atlanta shoot 10/13 from 3 on me so I don't know anymore! To me the CPU is a monster, even on pro.

As long as it wasn't Al Horford hitting all of those, I guess it is possible.

Well I guess there will be some wierd occurances now and then in an 82 game season.

Do you guys contest 3 point shooters with the Y button or just put up your hands with the right stick? I'm trying a mixture of both but having the CPU shoot like that is pretty demoralising.

If the CPU is torching you from 3, what you can do without sliders or settings is when you close out, don't try to block it. Just keep running into him and get in his face, and they'll miss shots more and more. Also when playing D on the ball, if you hold the left trigger then you can stay in front of your man better.

Yeah i hold LT a lot. I still find it hard to keep the CPU under 55% FG though. In my mind they tend to hit way too many of their open looks, where as in real life an open look doesn't mean a guarenteed basket. Probably just my lack of stick skills though...

It also bugs me that someone like Mario Chalmers can be Ray Allen on the 3-pt line.

Well in my next game the Clippers have come out and shot 5/5 from 3 in the first quarter....

What the hell??? I have been adjusting coaching settings, changing defenses, using LT, the right stick and the Y button to contest. How the hell am I supposed to enjoy this game when the CPU is playing by different rules? My 3 point percentage is absolutely miserable, almost single digit and I use real player percentage and only take open looks.

I have never been at such a loss in a sports game!

I've been there, and it still occurs every now and again, but I've learned to limit these sort of outcomes (on pro). I've felt 2K12 punishes undisciplined defense more than any other 2K I've played. As such, I had to learn to drop a lot of the little things I used to be able to get away with (infrequent on-ball steal attempts, a little bit of over-helping, doubling post, etc.).

In 2K12, I've had the most defensive success when I just buckled down and tried to keep my man in front of me. I didn't try to create turnovers, I didn't try to steal, or out-smart them. I just knew they only had 24 seconds and if I could just play strong defense for 14 seconds of that, they'd likely be forced into having to do something they don't want to. My defensive game this year is based a lot more on solid defense, contesting a shot, and ensuring I box out and clear the rebound.

I'm assuming most of us are familiar with both the players we're using and the players we're competing against so I'll save the whole, "You have to know who you're playing and what they can do" shtick. However, I will say "knowing" isn't always good enough. There's been a lot of times where I've been guarding someone like Dell Curry and just had a lapse, where I chose to give him a little bit of normal breathing room, thinking he wouldn't pull (he would, and he'd hit). I also stay aware of shooters even when they don't have the ball. I'll make sure I don't leave them (or that my teammates don't leave them) to go double somewhere else. I'm willing to force drive on players like Curry, Steve Kerr, or Reggie Miller. I mean, I'll put my defender right up in their grill, almost begging them to put the ball on the floor and try to create.

In contrast, for non-shooters, I definitely make sure not to force their hand on the perimeter. Again, 2K12 was one of the first games I've played where a quick guard (ex: Derrick Rose) could blow past me if I played them tight on the perimeter and then make the rest of my team pay by drawing the defense in and kicking. Unfortunately, part of the reason he blows past me is because the defense feels so skittish, but he blows past me if I'm guarding him very closely nonetheless. As such, I give non-gunners a sufficient amount of space and really relent from attempting to steal the rock, even if they're dribbling right in front of my face. I just work on keeping them in front of me, then challenging if they shoot.
