Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
yes to icon switching.
Elite players, and ballhandlers on this game are going to consistently beat you off dribble. The dribble stick is just to easy to use, and the moves are to effective to avoid being beat off the dribble.
Therefore, you always have to know where your rim protector is at all times, and be ready to switch to him and protect the rim. On previous versions of the game the main focus was guarding the ball, and trusting your off ball defenders to help. On 2k13 the only way to play good, and consistent defense is to focus on protecting the rim. Protecting the rim is way more important than playing lock down perimeter defense in 2k13.Psn: Alabamarob

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
You don't need to turn the block slider up to get more blocks. With the new 2k roster updates blocking is much better. I can get anywhere from 2 to 10 blocks on a given game using the Pistons, Pacers, or Nets on the default hof SIM. This is against the CPU and other os members.
I switch once I think i might be beat. However, whenever I see an isolation play I switch and bring the big over. Its my way of encouraging the opponent to run some sort of offense other than iso.
Coach2K and JasonWilliams55 can give you some good advice on shotblocking. They have alot of posts in this forum about it.

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
Thank goodness I saved my OP from that thread as well.
2k knowledge, tips, strategies, etc.
Playing defense in 2k this year means using the left stick (LS) and modifier (LT) to try and neutralize offensive player’s movements. It is best used in conjunction with the right stick (RS) simultaneously. There is a learning curve to using all 3 together.
Back in 2k13 is the ability to cut off players by a quick shimmy to the left or right (flick RS) and stop player movements in their tracks.
Refrain from spamming the steal button and try to use it only while a dribble animation is playing out.
The ability to change your defensive stance to the left and right is back...use it to take away the dominant hand of offensive players or to shade them off to your help defenders.
Try not to jump as much trying to block shots in the paint, try mixing it up using the right stick (hands up animations) and positioning tactics. Especially if you’re playing the 5 (Center), don’t leave your feet.
Not all shot blockers are chase down shot blockers... speed and quickness is back in NBA 2k and its useless to have Tim Duncan sprinting behind Dwayne Wade trying to get the block from behind. What you end up doing is getting Duncan fatigued and maybe a simple foul and a ‘and-1’ situation… just let it go!!!
Know the defensive ratings of the player you’re using to play defense. Don't push up with a player you know is laterally slower that the offensive player. You will get burned every time, unless you’re playing him for the shot and want him to dribble. Again use the change stance ability and at least try to take his dominant side away.
Don’t double team a player too excessively... double teaming in the middle of the court or at the top of the 3 point line is foolish... try doing it near the sidelines and baseline, using the sidelines as a defenders.
Don't be afraid to go to the match ups (defensive settings) menu and sag off players who can't shoot and play tight on those that can shoot; now you’re still at the mercy of the defensive player's defensive awareness if you’re not using them but defense is a give and take notion.
Remember to hold down the modifier (LT) button after shots to box out shooters... Playing great defense ends with a rebound anything other than that is bad defense. If you actually take time out to control your rebounders and HIT the LT, you get better results because you are actually boxing out.
LT, LT, LT- very powerful trigger... especially if you leave 'auto contest/ intense D'.
You'd be surprised how effective beating players to their spot and simply holding LT is...
Even directly under basket, after originally thinking it was overpowered... lately, just angling and holding LT has resulted in a contact animation or block.
Go to your controller settings and put Defensive Assist to 0. It gives me full control of my player on defense. I be feeling like Gary The Glove Payton
There is usually a window after a player receives the ball where he is not really defending it well, either in his dribble or just holding it. If you know you have a player who is a good thief against a player who is weak in ball security this is the easiest time to get a steal IMO.
Lastly, the 'take charge' button is very fluid. Just hold B and get in the way... you can also flop!
Defending the PAINT:Do not touch the left and right triggers, once an offensive player is engaged in the post stance, let the defender create contact and ride it out, use RS + LS at opportune times to cut off moves as well as block the shot (Push RS towards offensive player during shot animation). This is not as easy as it sounds, practice, practice.
Also, you can keep the RS pushed in a direction in order to keep the defenders hands up, this will help interior defense as well. If you point them in the direction of the ball handler with the left stick you will contest the shot. Again, don't touch the triggers -- they seem to cancel out any sort of defense like blocking and contesting shots.
Coaching sliders do effect what goes on, on the court. Now the shot tendency coach sliders are debatable whether or not they affect gameplay.
Def Pressure means how fast (or hustles) around on defense.
Help D means how often other players look to help on defense.
Defensive settings:
Play tight on off ball means they will play tight but rarely help out, while deny means they will not help out on D.
On ball, play tight is closely guarding the ball handler, moderate is a good option as it gives some space but also protects the drive as well.
I personally use moderate for everyone that is not an actual 3pt threat. Then I usually play tight or deny ball (off ball).
Now the Help D coaching slider works in conjunction with the def. settings.
Also RS on defense works wonders, keep it pressed towards the ball even when a pass is being made, it will help you get tip passes more often.
Play intense defense all game long. Be relentless, even if they take the lead... stay strong and hound them.
Lay off the turbo button, unless u start to lose ur opponent and u need to stay in front of him. always hold the power defense stance button (r2). stay close ur opponent and get into his chest, show him that ur not afraid of his little corny dribble moves or his player blowing pass u and getting to the hole. move side to side like a linebacker and cut ur opponent off and also anticipate his movements. these guys are predictable so if they're moving left trust me they'll move right...etc...u get the picture
In general for OFF ball D:
SAG OFF, if they couldn't even hit a barn door, like Greg Anthony
MODERATE, if they have a rating below 80 from 3 but are decent mid range shooters (70+) like LaMarcus Aldridge
TIGHT, if you're playing someone who has a 80+ rating from 3
DENY BALL, if TIGHT isn't working on the sharpshooter or if it's a star. If it's a star, toggle between moderate and deny ball, depending on whether you're playing DWade or Durant.
In general for ON ball D:
SAG OFF, if it's Greg Anthony
MODERATE, if you're playing someone who could beat you off the dribble and can shoot the mid range, e.g. DWade, LBJ
TIGHT, if you're playing a sharpshooter who has no business taking several dribbles, e.g. Korver, Ray Allen
As for manually playing on ball D:
- Lay off the LT, until the ball handler looks like he's about to take the shot, or if the player looks like he might have the step on you. If you just hold it all game, you're going get beat off the dribble multiple times.
- Use the left stick to track your man. Direct the ball handler where YOU want him to go. If he's relentlessly attacking, back off. Keep him away from the middle and towards the baseline. Force him to his weak hand. If you slide to much in one direction, switch to another defender to get back in position. If the ball handler has already made a move, use LT and RT to attempt to get back.
- If it's obvious that the ball handler is trying to make a pass, hold the right stick in the direction of the pass to put your hand up, and the CPU defender of the pass receiver may try to intercept the ball. When someone's lost their dribble, CROWD them with LT and deny their pass by pushing the right stick (in any direction).
-If you want your CPU teammates to stop double teaming, go to def settings and set double team to never. If it still happens, decrease the help D. If it STILL happens, go to coach profiles and set double teams to zero.
Playing intense defense all game is a recipe for getting burned all game (ofc, if they know what they're doing). It might work for predictable players, and getting up in their chest is probably a good strategy, but I would never do that with people who turbo spam with DWade and LBJ all game.
First of all let off the LT. Only use LT the first 2 seconds after you body up the post player, then let it go, use RS to try and muscle him away from the hoop. Soon as he goes for his shot, move the RS AWAY from his body. That will make your defender lunge up in the air and body him up without a foul usually.
For Running hooks, as soon as he goes to make his move to start running, run to the spot he's going. Don't run with him, run to where he is going to shoot his jumphook and press y, beat him to the spot.
Hands up defense in the post is usually good for faceup players. Instead of committing to a full contest just use hands up because you can move with ya hands up if the faceup player hits you with a pump fake and tries to blow by you. Also hands up is decent after they get a offensive rebound.
Also on faceup drives, try beating him to the spot you think he's going. Go for a charge or use the lunge animation by moving the RS away from the defender like I told you earlier.
There's an animation where if you are bodying up a post player who's already made his move and just wants to the shot up, they will do a layup as if you're not there, even when pressing the right stick into them and holding the right trigger. I've found that pressing the right stick AWAY (or towards the basket) from the defender makes them take a contested layup.
Also, when you have a big man with low security under/near the basket (especially where they are holding the ball beneath their waist) and you haven't got a big to contest him, spam the steal button (lol usually twice or three times will do), and do it when they are holding it in an area they really have no business being in.
In real games if you try playing swords with the offensive ball handler dude is going to blow past you everytime. Let's bring back the days that D12 could lock down derrick rose on the perimeter though. riiiiiight.
You kids gotta figure out what you want from a game. If you're glued to the defender, the moment you don't match his movement on key you're getting blown past because you left the margin of error so small. Give fast offensive players a step or three and you can then make a diagonal back movement, reposition, and then LT + Towards the man and match his momentum.
The moment they bring back the fact you can LT+Shuffle at a light speed and stop the driving you guys will go back to crying about how the game is stupid.
When 14 comes out though it's cool. You guys will talk about how good 13 was. The cycle will continue.
Im starting to do this as well. i fight to keep my defender in position to contest and not try to block. seems to get better results. after all, in real life most contests are not attemps to block the shot but to pressure the shooter. the only time i go for the block now is if i feel i know the shot is comming and have a good chance at it. even when you are in position and the contest animation has started, its bet to let it play out, the block animations starts from the begining and a well timed contest seems to get better results at affecting the shooter than a late block attempt.
on defense all you have to do is stay in front of your man and be ready to press L2 to contest the shot. DONT PRESS TRIANGLE. press L2.
You use intense D judiciously so you DON'T get burned. It helps create and maintain contact with the defender when used in spurts and puts you in a position to cut off and auto-contest. Don't just lay on it like lock-on defense in 2K10, or else the defender may adjust and drive right by.
Steals and blocks are gambles this year like they should be (although it's still way too easy to spam steals). Now blocks are underpowered, but you can play some decent defense just using intense D and good player positioning along with hands up to help contest shots.
Watch a real NBA game. Notice how little defenders reach and jump for blocks on interior man defense compared to how often most of us do it in game.
Granted, I'm playing with custom sliders that have on ball defense high but intense D is the most useful defensive button in game. It's your first option. Leave the blocks to help defense, late close outs, and chasedowns, and leave the steals to opportunistic gambles.
Defense is definitely there this year.
For spot up shooters with sig skills, Tight off-ball or Deny and tight on-ball as you don't want the defender backing off during the pass (as it registers as on-ball). If they are still helping out, lower your help-D coach slider.
As for players not helping on D, its either due to having them set to Play tight or Deny ball (off-ball). If its moderate or sag-off and they are still not helping its probably due to having the help-D coach slider too low, try raising it.
If you've maxed out your help D (coaching) and have sag off (off-ball) and they are still not helping, who the f*** is it? their D-Awr must be really low.
The Help D Strength Slider (global) is to raise or lower the quality of help defense. Meaning that it will make the help D more effective when it comes.
Defensive pressure is how fast the team will move (rotate) on defense. Think of it as the coach telling you to hustle to your man. Alot of people equate this to better defense, but not necessarily, against a good user (or CPU) you will get burnt on backdoors when the opposing team is swinging the ball around.

Originally posted by coach2kThe first skill to learn in playing solid defense is to eliminate the easy buckets off turnovers and poor shot selection.
This game kills you for poor shot selection. Start chucking threes against a good opponent and it usually results in an easy basket on the other end.
Making baskets makes your opponent have to beat all five of your guys in the half court.
To get all of your guys back quicker when you miss a shot, don't bury your point guard on the baseline and lower your crash boards slider (found in your timeout settings) if you find your guys getting beat. Also learn to stop the ball on the break by getting a man in front of the guy with the ball as quickly as possible.
Once you improve your transition defense, the next is step is to work on your half court defense.
Pay attention to how the guy is running his offense. Is he driving to the rim with a guy every possession? Is he settling on jumpers? Is he driving to the lane and dishing to a big man?
In your time out area, you'll find two sliders that are important. One is defensive pressure and the other is help defense.
You'll want to adjust these based on how the guy is playing. For example, the first thing that I learned was guys would drive to lane and when help defense came up, they would dish to the big man. Lower my help would stop a play like that.
With experience, you will learn which way to move these sliders. Small adjustments over the game can make a big difference and you'll find that smart opponents will immediately recognize how you are playing them and so you might adjust them the other way in the same game.
Once you are comfortable with that, you'll want to start to work on your on ball defense.
The goal, to stay between the man with the ball and the basket.
If you haven't played a lot of on ball defense, start working on rookie mode to get used to it and try and hold the CPU under 40 percent shooting. Then move up in difficulty.
You'll find that just playing defense with good positioning is often more than enough to win.
What you want to be careful of is attempting a steal all the time or trying to block everything because your team mates take their cue from you. You'll notice this sometimes if you try and block a shot and you see a team mate jump too.
Learn to use the right stick to get your hands up on defense, especially in the paint without hitting block or intense defense and try and bump the guy. Usually that's enough to cause a miss.
Finally, learn to challenge every shot with the right stick.
Over time, you'll learn to anticipate better and learn when to hit the steal button and the right time to get your hands up to intercept passes.
But the funny thing about defense is that you have to learn it by doing it. It's tough to say do this and expect that because there are so many variables like what team are you using and who is your opponent using and how good is he.
It's a ratings based game ultimately and it's tougher for me to play defense as the Pacers than say someone who has the Lakers because you have to work smarter and harder than that guy.
I guess I also need to mention, you've got to block out and get the rebound. Something that's a lot harder this year. But good positioning and not getting out of position helps there more than you know.
I'm always amazed that people resort to so much trickery on defense. Zones, double teams, pressing full court. But in the end, good players usually beat all of that. I think the reason people do it, is because they feel like they are actually DOING something and it does work against some opponents.
My advice learn to play straight up man to man, solid defense.Originally posted by Optik???iircThis thread isn't helped by being swept under the rug into the online sub-forum. Anyway, I labbed with alabamarob a few weeks ago and I learned a few things from him that I never thought of doing before or dismissed as bad defense:
- If you take control of the closest defender to your basket and put your hands up, it seems to congest the paint when your opponent drives.
- If you raise your hands when someone is going up for the layup, you might be able to knock it out of their hands as they're going up.
- To defend up and unders, either just hold LT when they are making their move (JUST LT, don't touch the left stick or anything else) or flick (not push) the right stick away from your opponent (towards the basket).
- When defending the pick and roll, if you want to try to intercept the pass, it's better that you don't make contact with the ballhandler when going over the pick, and when you do go over the pick, push the right stick towards the ball before it's passed(the right stick seems to be an instruction to team-mates in the immediate vicinity to do what ever the controlled defender is doing, sort of like a "hands up" shout that a player gives to his team-mates when they are on defense). It seems to congest the paint, and your team-mates make an effort to steal the pass.
- I know I said in a previous post that pushing the right stick so that your defender was a "hands up" position was a recipe for getting burned every time, well I should clarify that post by saying that you should be pushing the right stick into the defender on drives, as when it is combined with the left stick, it seems to be the most effective form of defense in the game.I mostly get steals, with or without a sig skill ...
- while a big is driving and tries to finish a fastbreak, I press steal and he loses the ball, depending on the moment, it goes outside or I get the ball (be it cpu or hum)
- while oponent in post up position, if he intends to drive I press right stick towards him and the place he wants to go, cause contact and get the ball (be it cpu or hum)
- when opponent tries to pass the ball out of double team, press right stick away/right or left (depending on who/where is the pass intended) from opponent and intercept the ball (be it cpu or hum)
- whenever the ball is bobbled, I first move the right stick to the player (hum)
... Now, this do not means that is a certainty steal every time or that I dont get some reach in fouls called, but they usually are 1 or 2 at most, per game ... angles and animations are important, as well as anticipation, but specially "contact" ... in sum, is just an adjustment phase that requires patience and observation ... I compared to the one faced when quickly presses the pass button trying to make the player pass the ball quicker (old videogame habbit) but instead the player does a pass fake.

It seems like there are a ton of peeps here who don't understand Momentum and this thread is for them.
Some think its "overpowered" and some don't, I am of the latter, if you know its there take advantage, make it a positive don't just look at the negative that some people would like you to keep thinking about. You can be the greatest 2k player and still blow a big lead to a bum, momentum is everything.
Remember last year when the Clippers made that huge comeback against the Grizzlies in the playoffs (video below for reference), my god if that happened in 2k, some peeps heads would explode and call the game "broken", etc... It happens, momentum is real, learn to deal with it and take advantage.
Momentum is a silent (pun) game-changer and it literally affects everything that happens in 2k from shooting, steals, rebounding, team hustle, etc, etc...
From what I see/hear is that alot of peeps think that just cause they are open shooting shots that they should sink 100% of the time. Even with perfect releases your still gonna miss some, this is the way it is in 2k and in real life as well, ever had that release and you knew it was good just to find out a second later that it clanged, sometimes you miss good shots, it happens.
There are a number of factors that get calculated for a shot, release, defense, shooting sliders, momentum and probably more. I feel momentum is one of the most important factors in the equation, it can give you a deep 3 that really blows the doors open or it could cause you to miss that poorly timed shot even though you're wide open (not all wide open shots are the best choice for the situation).
In real life basketball, you need to be conscious of matchups, strategies, etc, etc... this applies to 2k as well.
When momentum is on your side, take advantage and make the other team pay, get to the rack and look for the kick outs. Conversly if your on the short end of momentum there is one major thing you can do to turn it around (or atleast start turning it around); call a timeout. This somewhat resets momentum (depending on how big the MO has ballooned to), if its just 2-3 baskets a timeout will suffice, if its like 18-2 run, well you should've done called a timeout or two already and if you've already passed that point, well maybe the other person is just beating you, chalk it up and keep going/move on.
Keep in mind that there are several ways to build momentum; steals, blocks, made shots, but nothing builds momentum quicker than big dunks. If you can put together a few dunks and some timely stops then you will be turning the big MO in your direction. Once that happens, then you will find yourself catching more and more breaks (rebounds, hustle points, shots falling after poor releases, contact layups falling).
As my man Coach2k has said before here on OS, the easiest/best way to determine how much momentum you have is by listening to the crowd. Obviously its easier if your playing on your court as the crowd will start going crazy after making a good play.
A common misconception is that having home court actually gives some kind of advantage from the tip, it doesn't. The away team can still play the crowd and control the flow (momentum) of the game its just opposite, meaning that when the crowd is silent or booing is when you have the big MO on your side, time to take advantage.
If/when the home team makes a play or two, call a timeout to take the crowd back out of it (resetting momentum) this is especially important if your team is off lesser quality. If the teams are equal you may be able to ride it out ala Phil 'the Zenmeister' Jackson, this is no easy task against a good opponent, mind you. Either way, DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL TIMEOUT IF YOU GET SCORED ON MORE THAN 3 TIMES IN A ROW!!! This is one way to quickly leave the doors wide open for your opponent to walk right through.
Never try to jumpshoot your way out of a scoring slump, get to the rack, get fouls (RS towards defender while driving and contact is being made) on defense don't gamble, play sound and remember lucky offense always beats good defense . Going back to shooting slumps, as said don't try and shoot your way out, its one of the quickest ways to making your team fall apart, we've all seen it, bobbled passes, turnovers while driving, start missing wide open shots, not hustling for loose balls and rebounds, defense will start getting worse (bad animations start playing out).
I cannot begin to tell you how many people I've seen blow huge leads by trying to shoot themselves out of a slump when they are up, instead of slowing down, milking clock and getting good shots. Most of the time I feel as if they are trying to be too "sim" and shoot midrange just cause, not for me, if the lane is open I going in.
Its on the defense to stop the offense, of course minus iso spamming thats a no no. But then again, if you want to iso spam, it makes it easy on defense to figure out what to do to stop your game.
Seriously, just by understanding the flow of the games momentum I am able to keep my FG% around 46-47% (HOF CUSTOM SLIDERS) while keeping my opponents to 38-42%. Hope this helps.

Momentum is the idea that because, and only because you made your last two shots, you're more likely to make the next one. And that simply isn't true. That said, it is an effect in the game (unfortunately, IMO) and to play the game well you have to understand it and utilize it.
In addition to listening to the crowd, be aware of what the announcers are saying. A lot of the time, when Steve Kerr speaks in the game that is the game developers speaking directly to YOU.
If he, or Clark Kellogg says "The _____ers should really try to do X right now," then best believe that doing X is in your best interest.
Another thing to watch for is the game's favorite treat to reward you for good momentum breaking: the putback dunk. When you're on the receiving end of a run, and you call a good play for your star and execute it well, you'll often see the shot miss but one of your other players fly in from nowhere to throw down the putback.
That's the game telling you, "Good job, good effort!!" When you see it, you'll know you've switched the momentum or at least evened it out. When you yourself are on a run and you see the other team do that, know it's a good time to call timeout or at least take your foot off the gas and work on re-establishing momentum for yourself.

I was like, "Hmm, it almost sounds like he's directing that at me... Oh crap, he is!" When he says that, it's your cue to call timeout. Like, right now!
Some of them are subtle and seem almost obvious, "they really need to close out on these shooters" or "they need to stop firing so many jumpers and get something going to the basket."
But if you hear that, then that's a good time to either make a coaching settings change or really focus in on your tactics, because when they say that stuff, that is when game will give you an escape hatch from your cold streak or your opponent's run.

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
A year ago? Did you read the threads?
He was bumping threads that have a ton of good info in them, all pertaining to this year's game, because there have been a bunch of "how do I play" threads popping up lately.
Honestly if that is the reason that is absolutely crazy.Comment
