Re: Poll: Reach in fouls rate

I've been playing My Career Mode (All-Star level) all morning, and I'm NOT seeing all these "my teammates were ready to foul out" situations nor am I getting into foul trouble. Some of you are straight-up lying.

Reach in fouls are called way too much, my steal rating is 95 and I have level3 pickpocket signature skill, yet every time I go for a steal i am called for a foul.

Stop going for the steal! just because you are a great pick pocket you (according to nba stats) should get only 1 a game, most steals come on passing lanes which means you may get only 2 or 3 steals a game in 48 minutes. If you are playing 5 min qrts expect no steals.

The fouls are way too high. You have taken away the on the ball defense that 2k encouraged last year, but everyone still played off the ball as the Center or Power Forward. Gamers that play on the ball defense and steal the ball should be rewarded for their skills. I would have passed on 2k13 if I had known you were going to revert back to 2k12 settings. I paid for a new game, and that is what is expected.

                I vote for Pre-Patch settings.

An occasional feature on the 82games.com web site is the random stat -- today's edition looks at which players are the leaders in steals, both intercepted passes, and picks.

Scroll down a bit for on-ball steals. The highest in a particular season is 1.91 per48 minutes, so halve that for quick ranked games, and you should be expecting less than an on-ball/lose ball steal a game.

I like what the patch did in respect to reach in fouls. You don't pick the right spot to steal and reach basically, you will get hit with the foul. Before the patch it was too easy to spam the ball handler even with reach foul at 100 and still steal the ball without getting into foul trouble. Now you have to be careful because if you just spam steal, you will foul out. Had a beautifully timed steal with Damon Lillard in my last game. It felt earned and not cheap. That's the way it should feel. Play good Defense with your feet.

I do have to agree its a little disheartening to see this quick of a response to something that for the most part, bothers casual players...a poll would've been great for a lot of other issues we've given feedback about...

But to answer the question: leave it as is please

Re: Poll: Reach in fouls rate

I've only been able to play a few games post-patch, all of them offline. I'm leaning toward the belief the steal success was lowered maybe just a little bit too much for non-online players. I can see how this may have positively affected online and user vs. user play, but for the offline gamer, it's not the coolest thing ever right now.

At this very moment, pressing the steal button while playing on-ball against the computer seems to automatically initiate a foul. I do not find this realistic. When playing on ball defense in real life, I do not repeatedly lunge for the ball as my opponent dribbles. As others have said, I defend with my feet. With that said, my hands are still active, and I'll look to make a play with them if the opportunity presents itself. On most occasions, the offensive player would be able to deal with my active hands - he'd protect the ball, change dribble hands, proceed into the paint, etc.

In contrast, right now, in 2K13, I don't have the feeling of being an active on-ball defender in terms of fully pressuring my opponent. I can move my feet, and that works pretty well most of the time (except for those few moments when the computer will put its head down and displace you regardless of positioning) but I don't feel there's a countermove to a careless dribble anymore.

Prior to the patch, if the computer ballhandler was rocking the cradle waist-high at the top of the key, I'd be able to press the steal button to force that ballhandler to take care of his dribble. If the ballhandler was being particularly careless, I might be able to provoke a knock away and/or steal.

Now, thus far, I'm not sure I have a way to deter opposing ball handlers from dribbling the ball directly in front of my face without protection. It seems I can withhold pressing the steal button for 3 and a half quarters, waiting for the exact perfect time to unleash it. Then, when that moment comes, regardless of how careless the computer's dribbling, I'm tagged with a foul.

I'm not frustrated with not being able to steal the ball all game. I'm just a little discouraged with my early inability to employ the steal command without fouling, even in its most timely scenarios.

But you are not accounting for the differences in how NBA players handle the ball in real life and how users handle the ball in the game.

NBA players don't run around with a live dribble at full sprint bouncing off opponents and teammates alike...NBA players don't lazily stand in one place dribbling the ball in their off-hand while they stare at the court and call a play.

And when NBA players do that stuff the way 2k gamers do, they get the ball ripped, just like 2k gamers do. If NBA players handled the ball like 2k gamers do, on-ball steals in the NBA would skyrocket.

People spam steal because it works, and it works because too many 2k players are sloppy or lazy when handling the ball.

The original settings rewarded disciplined offensive play (take care of the ball or else you'll lose it) and rewarded disciplined defensive play (if you spam too much you will be out of position and get burned to the rim).

The new settings takes away that balance. It reduces the defense's ability to keep the offense honest, reduces the advantages of knowing the iso-motion controls, and encourages more lazy/sloppy ball-handling.

I think this reach in penalty should just be for online play. I'm mostly an offline player and I pretty much have to stop using the steal button on ball. Seems like any time I touch the button I get a foul called on me, seems overpowered in my opinion.

I agree. It seems there was a solid balance with the steal button when playing against the computer (on All-Star) pre-patch. I don't recall there being a lot of steals, but initiating the steal button when a ballhandler left the rock very exposed didn't always result in a foul either, as it shouldn't.
