The best players that you have never heard of

In the world of advanced technology and communication tools such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, nothing really gets past a fan of a sport. If a player is good or has some kind of amazing performance, he will be talked about and featured on a video, post or article before you know it. However, there are always some players that slip through the crack. For every “John Wall” college player that has loads of attention, there are hundreds of players that just quietly come out and perform. Here are my top 5.

5) G - Nevil Burns – Sophomore – Louisville
I had an individual ask me earlier in the season, “what happened to Nevil Burns”. Many that followed Burns throughout his high school career may ask that question. The biggest part of Nevil Burns’ “disappearing act” last year came from the fact that his backcourt mate Zachary Grinnage emerged as an All American type player. Nevil deferred to him last year but this year he has began showing signs of the player that we always knew he was. With Grinnage averaging an even 16 points this year, Burns has stepped up and is averaging 14.3. His jump shot is looking to be more reliable and he is showing signs of being the big time player we all thought that he could be.

4) F - Tiquan Shields – Sophomore – Alabama
They say that defense wins games so I guess that makes our boy Tiquan a winner. If you are not a big time college basketball fan, there is a good chance that you have never even heard of this guy. Shields had a rocky start to his career last year but since then, he has really turned it on. He still needs to improve on the offensive end but he is one of the most intimidating defenders in the country as of now. He is currently fourth in the nation in blocks and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

3) G – Sadiq Jones – Sophomore – Oklahoma
You may not have heard of Oklahoma’ Sadiq Jones because he is not an electrifying payer. He isn’t going to perform any 360s coming down the lane or intentionally cross someone up to get a top play on Sportscenter. He is an old fashion point guard that is one of the better true point guards in the country. While assist numbers and smart decision making don’t get you a lot attention from the casual fan, it gets you a ton of attention from NBA GMs.

2) G - R.J. Rideaux – Senior – Lafayette
Here is the first player on the list to come from one of the smaller schools. All you need to know about R.J. Rideaux is that he is one of the best passers in the country. Last year Rideaux was in the top five in assists and this year he is leading the country mid way through with 8.7 assists per game. Many thought that last year was a “fluke” but this year he has done it against a higher level of talent with five games against teams from the major conferences already this season. Keep an eye on this guy because I have a strong feeling you will hear his name called sometime in next year’s draft.

1) F - Roy Mason – Senior – Jackson State
Raise your hand if you had any idea that Jackson State even had a basketball team. Seriously though, Roy Mason has been a guy that has found a way to hover around the top five list in blocks and rebounds for the past three years. This year, he has a good chance to finish in the top three in both. Sure he doesn’t face the competition of many of the other guys on the list but he is dominating like is supposed to against that competition. His play this year could potentially land him a spot in the first round next year.

The sad ending of a career before it ever got started<O</O

Two days ago, number 12 ranked high school player (and brother to number 2 high school prospect Tyrell Carrington) was in a devastating car crash in Knoxville, TN. According to several different reports, a friend of Jaron Carrington, Davon Stewart, was driving the vehicle at a little under 100 miles per hour when the vehicle lost control and crashed directly in to a large tree. Jaron suffered a severe spinal cord injury and it appears that his basketball career is over. Jaron is currently in St. Mary’s Hospital and there is no estimated time frame as to how long it will be before he is released. Stewart died on impact.

<O</OIn response to the tragedy, Tyrell Carrington stated “I am devastated. So so devastated. I love my brother so much and to see him like this kills me. I would like to announce that because my brother will not be able to play for the St. John’s, the school that he verbally committed to, I am officially verbally committing to St. John’s. Hopefully I will be half the leader that I know my brother would have been on the team”.<O</O
