A lot of these ratings are questionable now that you look at them.

I guess they figured "Hey, we'll just add about 70 different ratings and they'll never really pay attention to them."

Exactly. And stats are the best way to do ratings, because otherwise you have nothing to base them on. The developers can't have seen every single player in the league play, and even if they have, they can't have seen every game that player played in. As a result, you have to use stats to judge people you haven't seen. Saying "I think this player should x in shot blocking" would only make sense if he blocks a lot of shots. Hence you do the formula based on the stats, and if he is a good shot-blocker, the game will reflect this. A player who gets few steals should not have a high steal rating. A player who doesn't pass the ball or get assists, like Kobe, should not have a high teamwork rating. Sure, I may not know what all the ratings mean, but teamwork is pretty self explanatory. Look it up in the dictionary. You will not find "person who gets no assists and doesn't pass the ball" to be the definition.

Does that apply for all games?

Because I've yet to see a VIDEO GAME that has had perfect ratings for all players.

Unless you disagree please provide me with a game that has gone out and delivered perfect ratings on all players.

Hell even sports magazines rate players wrong yet you don't see any big drama over that do you. It's really simple you don't like ratings change them to what you think they should be. I don't see how that type of attitude is going make any sports company change the way they do their ratings.

Some of guy's just aren't happy with anything and there for you'll pout about everything.

Re: Ratings are up on IGN

We know they don't watch a lot of game because Starbury got a 99 in teamwork.

Then they have Artest one point higher than LeBron in defense. Please, Lebron doesn't touch Artest when it comes locking down.

I think a lot of these ratings are BS IMO. I think a lot of them lead to the same result in coding. Like Pass Accuracy and Court Vision. Yes I know they are 2 different things, but I think EA is only actually using one for passing and the rest are just there. It is too much to beleive to think EA got all of these to work effectively.

I think they are just going.
          Passing-86
          Pass acc- 81
          Court Vision- 84
          Pass effectiveness- 87

and then using 'Passing' as the only one that actually contributes to the game. That was just a example btw, but a lot of the ratings are similar skills.

          We will see.

Talk about getting all riled up over ratings man some people act like it's the end of the world based on ratings in this game. Then I even read a few posters say half the ratings probably don't do anything as if anyone has really had an actual copy of the game in their hands and found out that was the case. I'm guessing if the other company not to mention any names had put 100 ratings in their game you wouldn't hear more than 5 people question if all the ratings really mean anything. In fact I doubt there would be much of a fuss over any of the ratings like there is in this thread. I just think it's totally ignorant for anyone to say the ratings don't mean anything or do anything especially since no one has had a copy of the game to make that judgment or speculate what they do. How about actually playing the game first before making bold statements as to what the ratings won't do.

Even if half the ratings dont do anything, the really obvious ones should be accurately filled, there is absolutely no way in hell lebron james should be the third highest rated in defense, regardless of if that rating even does anything.

I still don't understand why they can't just get someone that knows basketball to do, or at least advise them on the ratings. If I did these ratings, the complaints would drop 95%.

I love how people are going off without having ONE clue as to how all of these ratings work/mean. Makes perfect sense.

There are some obvious things that are DEFINATELY wrong. There's nothing wrong with the ratings themselves, but people every year are always trying to give the excuse of "oh you don't know how the ratings work". It's not a valid excuse, vertical is vertical, Shawn Marion in no situaiton jumps lower than half the guys in the league. Speed is speed, acceleration is acceleration. Marion is the only guy in the league that can rebound, outlet, beat the other team down the court, and score, and "how the ratings work" cannot be an excuse for him having a slower speed and acceleration than Nash.

People make this excuse every year, and it's never valid, everytime the original ratings just weren't done properly, and you can't use players like you're supposed to be able to.

The point is, every game has messed up ratings. Every single sports game that come out has ratings that we don't agree on.

I hear ya to a point...The days when there were 6 ratings (I even go back to when there was one rating) are gone. With 70+ ratings, one would think that it maybe a combination of things. I don't know, never claimed I did. I am just saying that everyone's going nuts over this without the game or anything. I am no EA apologist--I've played 2K the past 3 years--but my opinion is that all of these ratings effect those "classic" ratings that people argue about. Who knows?

And if these ratings affect the 'classic' ratings then if you think about it then they don't do anything and are there just for show.

Like 2k7 doesn't have nearly as much as Live 07, but they could if they want to, example.

                            Layup- 80
                            Lay-up in traffic- 78
                            Lay-up off glass- 79

Now all the other 2 just contribute to 'layup'. If you lower 'lay-up off glass' to a 47, then the overall 'layup' rating decreses. Because if you can't lay it up off the glass, then your not that good at laying t up period.

I guess we will see when the game comes out, that is just my theory on how they are doing it.

i think its the fact theyve seen very short footage of gameplay and it looks bad. if it looked good, thered be props on the good use of ratings. for now, it looks like its a bad use of the ratings.
