Exactly! Well said. Use the training modes and you will really learn alot. I have been a 2K loyalist the last 9 years so it took me forever to figure out the controls. Once you play the NBA Academy things become a lot more fluid.
On Defense make sure that you you don't body up the ball handler unless you have someone that can play great defense on them. Also, disengage from the lock on type defense if you think you are going to get beat on one side. I've noticed that I will agressively push an offensive player via the lock down d, but will disengage and give the defender a little space. Also note that holding the LT doesn't back you down like in 2K, I believe it centers you on your defender. So don't hold the LT button while locked on or you will get burned every time.
The passing game is very reliant on icon passing. If you don't go with icon passing, make sure you see a faint circle around the players feet you want to pass to. I know it's different than 2K, but in the end I find it really rewarding (the spacing and passing realism just feels better- no more crazy perfect passes around the court like in 2K).
As a big 2K guy I really think Live brings something fresh and exciting ot the table. The ability to replay games with the rosters from the time the game happened is awesome, as is the DNA. I am also loving the collision animations, along with the crossover animations and control feel. Nothing is more satisfying than pulling off a sweet looking move with Kobe and hitting a beautiful fadeaway to send a game to OT. I find myself watching the replay in the game a lot- because I controlled the move and made it happen- it wasn't a cued animation brought about by some street fighter controller move like in 2K.
2K got stale to me last year, and it's a great game to watch in demo mode, but for my money Live 09 is the game to PLAY this year. I am really suprised I like the game so much, being that this is my first live since 99. I have to hand it to EA, they made a great game.
P.S. Online is a blast as well. 5 on 5 is great.
