Re: Demo: Superstar or All Star?

Super Star seems to have too much individual play. Not enough team play by the CPU.

What I mean by that is guy like Fisher seem to ignore Gasol and Kobe and look for his shot more than the Go To Guys look for theirs.

The difficulty is ok IMO but I've never found any level of Live that hard to be honest. I always handicapped my players to make it feel competitive. I like All-Star even though it is a step down from Super Star because vice versa I get a better sense that the players are playing as a unit more.

But right now to be honest after playing way more games than i intended to play i'm getting frustrated with both levels because to me there just seems to be way too much dumb stuff happening.

I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt because it's just the demo and that's why i don't like playing demo's because i get frustrated if something feels unfinished. I don't know maybe i was just expecting way too much already. I'll give it another try once the final product is released and I can use the Mavs instead of Lakers or Magic

Not as frustratingly difficult as you would expect the highest level to be, IMO...but it's still a challenge. The biggest diff to my eyes was that I tend to see bigger runs on Super. Gotten down 8-10 points and came storming back, and vice versa, wheras All-star games were almost always nip and tuck.

I was playing last night, and went to check on my fishsticks, and when I came back had forgotten I had bumped it up. After an 10-0 run I was like OH snap, lol. Seems you gotta get your game face on for Superstar. Reminds me of ID 04 in that regard.

I honestly don't think anyone is in a position to answer that accurately. Overall it's because people aren't used to the mechanics and playbooks in a way that will give them a deft mastery of the game's subtleties. More specifically, I don't think people have mastered the L Trigger/Icon Player Lock mechanic. Being able to use this effectively will be one of the major keys to breaking down the CPU's defense.

At this stage though, Superstar is appropriately challenging. I can tie, win, or lose, but the scores are going to be close. Since these are powerful teams, all five men on the floor are a threat, so offensively they are going to be easier for the human user. I don't think the Lakers or Magic are a great barometer for the game's general difficulty, but I do wonder what the challenge will feel like a month from now after I've mastered a team's playbook, shot releases, and every nook and cranny of the control options.

It depends - like you said, previous games would just give the CPU god-like abilities instead of playing smarter basketball.

I put it like this - you're going to have a lot more people playing Superstar than you did before. If you feel like there should be a normal distribution where the average is at All-Star, then yes superstar is too easy.

However I don't have any complaints about the way it plays and I think it's actually cool that the computer isn't shooting 75% every game.

I would say if you change Superstar to make it harder, replace the current all-star with the current Superstar difficulty - Superstar is a lot better IMO.

Yeah, we should definitely stress that Superstar plays a good game.

Re: Demo: Superstar or All Star?

On superstar the defenders are more active on defense and play their man tighter. They also seem to bite less on pump fakes and they're ability to hit shots is raised a bit. However the balance lies in the fact that your cpu teammates benefit somewhat from the extra awareness of the higher level. So u might go down by 10 but there's always a way to decrease the deficit. IMO Superstar is appropriately difficult but also realistic...since even at the highest difficulty level we still want a simulation experience

I think Superstar is hard, but the computer doesn't cheat. Superstar simply requires you to really focus when you play and don't make dumb - especially non-basketball - decisions. You really have to think, be patient and play fundamental basketball. While All-Star requires that as well, with Superstar you really have to think.

The result is that on Superstar, when I score, I actually feel like I have accomplished something. Also, when I stop them on defense, I feel really good and hold on to the rock like it's a cherished jewel.

I'm really enjoying this game. But, shhhh....don't tell me that, cause I'm not supposed to like NBA Live - LOL!

Really though, Superstar is really good. I'm impressed.

Re: Demo: Superstar or All Star?

I'm still playing on AllStar and having great games. I'm rarely ahead after 2 qtrs. but, I'm still enjoying the challenge at that level.

Last year I played on Superstar and had some pretty good games but, I did notice that Superstar kinda made teams a little better across the board.

And this resulted in teams like the Bucks, Thunder, Clippers etc. giving you just as tough of a game as the powerhouse squads.

For that reason I think I'll stick to Allstar, being that I'll be playing season mode this year. I just do not want the SAME challenge every night from every opponent when playing.

As long as Allstar provides a consistant challenge in the final build and the USER can defeat teams he should beat with execution rather fighting the tactics you deal with by raising the gameplay level.......I'll stick with Allstar.

Has anyone noticed the "god-like effect" in Superstar. In Madden, when you play on ALL MADDEN, there are times when you feel that the AI oppenent has these mysterious powers.

                      just curious.

Superstar is fantastic. I enjoy it more than All-Star. You'll see less "highlight" moves on Superstar but I'm ok with that.

Re: Demo: Superstar or All Star?

I tend to prefer All-Star simply because the CPU seems to get way more offensive boards on Superstar (which are still near-guaranteed scores) and the ball-handling turnovers are a little hard to deal with. I get enough turnovers due to the damn regular and freestyle passing (since they're both dependent on the direction you push the stick, there's bound to be some issues, especially on damn broadcast cam) and psychic pass-lane-playing CPU, having Kobe lose the ball off his foot every time after driving into VC isn't something I need to deal with.

I'll have to mess with the speed settings also... maybe lowering the rebounding slider for the AI a bit and raising the hands/handles on Superstar will make it a little better. I agree that it's not necessarily "harder", just different... but the differences are kind of annoying for me personally. I have close games (and get absolutely killed) on both levels but enjoy myself more on All-Star.

                              Stop cheesin', Stumble.

j/k But I will say, I'm not seeing most of the stuff you're seeing. As soon as I saw my first CPU steal, I made the small adjustment to give more space when dribbling, and poof, no more stealing issues. Not having the rebounding issues on Superstar, but it could be small sample size.

I do wish there was a way to give a hard foul when someone gets an O-board though.

Haha I knew someone would say that. It's definitely an adjustment not being able to break people off so easily compared to 2K9. But yeah, it mostly happens when it seems like I have someone beat and can't quite get rid of the ball on time when the help comes.. just seems like the random handling TOs happen too often when in reality it would normally be a charge/blocking foul or the ball-handler simply has to pick up his dribble (which is the way I'd prefer that Live went instead of all the random turnovers). Especially with a really good ball-handler.. if you're dribbling around with Dwight in the paint then yeah, strip him every time, but Jameer shouldn't lose the ball just because he's in traffic.. pick up his dribble, have to pass out, commit a charge, yeah... but not just lose the ball.
