It took me until my 7th store to finally get a hold of this game today, unbelievable. Two Best Buys never got their shipment and one was sold (said they only got four copies and they were gone 15 min after the store opened) so the $50 sale was out of the question for me. Went to two Walmarts, neither had the game yet, then one Gamestop that was sold out. Finally went to my 2nd GS and all they had left was the display copy but he said it was brand new so I went ahead and purchased it. Phew....
I played two games so far, 12 minutes default All-Star. First was Knicks (me) at home against the Celtics. I lost 105-84, I turned the ball over a ton (mostly bad passes) and shot under 30% from three. I made the mistake of playing CH2K8 over the weekend so I need to get out of the 2K frame of mind, it really hurt me in this game. The Celtics played some mean D and Pierce tore me up with his mid-range game. It was quite frustrating and the large talent gap was very evident. KG and Sheed were pretty quiet, both were floating outside and jacking up J's like a buncha fairies lol.
Played as the Cavs down in Miami and beat them 94-90. I had fewer sloppy turnovers this game and LeBron dominated, finishing with 37 (had 14 in the first quarter). The difference between facing the Heat defense instead of the Celtic defense was amazing, granted I was using a much more talented team in Cleveland. I was much more patient and tried to call plays regularly. D-Wade was ridiculous, he forced everything and took a ton of shots, I believe he finished with 25 or 27 FGA's but shot horribly.
What I like the most so far is the flow and pace of the game. It's so spot on with the runs and streaks, getting hot, shooting %, etc. All of that is perfectly done. I love that there is no cheap feeling at all in this game. It just feels like basketball. I got my butt kicked by Boston and it felt perfectly fine - they have more talent and played way better, they probably sould have won by more than 21 points. The best part was there wasn't a SINGLE dunk the entire game, 48 minutes and zero dunks.
I also love the individual match ups and mismatches. At one point I was struggling on offense and the Celtics brought Scalabrine in and he was covering Al Harrington. I went to Al and got three straight buckets, the goofy red-head couldn't come close to stopping him. KG came back in after that and it was back to being quiet for Harrington, KG did a good job on him.
What I don't like...
It doesn't seem like the CPU turns the ball over often unless it's an offensive foul. I had saw one 3 seconds call (on KG) already which was awesome. Beasly had a push-off foul in the Cavs/Heat game that looked dope, Delonte moved his feet and got the call on the perimeter. I saved a replay of it, looks cool. The lack of turnovers could be that I'm not that familiar with the defense yet. I can move my feet well and stay in front of players but I don't get many strips/steals yet when the CPU tries to force things.
The passing is still hit or miss. Freestyle passing is cool but there are some times when it's horribly off (as well as regular analog passing). I had a great opportunity in the Knicks game when Lee was doubled on the block and Nate was WIDE open in the corner and tried to analog passing but instead Lee threw it to the top of the key and it got intercepted. I was also on a fast break and tried to use freestyle pass to hit Larry Hughes on the wing but somehow I threw the ball behind me back towards half court. Very frustrating.
The game is a lot of fun despite having it's fair share of warts. I still need to un-2K myself quite a bit though, I have so many habits I need to break before I'll be able to master Live. There are plenty of 'wow' moments that aren't very frequent which makes them even more special. Live 10 won't be for everyone but it's certainly for me.
