Re: Official NBA Live 10 Impressions Thread

I really want to reserve my impressions until the 'online' game is patched but there are a few things I can throw out now...

The "online version" of the game is currently unfinished. We know that the current fatigue issue leads to a breakdown in the gameplay infrastructure. Because this will surely change (I'm assuming with the first patch), part of me knows that what we're playing is basicaly an "all-access" demo... no fatigue and (from my 16-game experience) VERY LITTLE act-of-shooting fouls being called gives us all an opportunity to see the game "Blown Open". I actually don't mind this FOR NOW. First, because I know it's temporary and, second, because it gives me a chance to really see ALL of the animation mechanics without restriction.

Patch footnote: Allow the user to COMPLETE on-the-fly coaching changes WITHOUT CONSTANTLY REMOVING THE MENU EACH TIME THE SCREEN CHANGES. There is not enough continuous time allotted to make the desired coaching/subbing adjustments. Currently, you pretty much have to pause the game or burn a timeout or risk inactivity during the run of play (not good).

When the game is patched, my expectation (given what I've seen) is that the success rates for (so-called) cheese tactics should be greatly reduced. This specifically applies to 3pt shooting. Yes, i have seen Mo Williams hit 23 of 49 from 3pt range in a ranked match (courtesy of The L Train 23)... No, i don't expect to see this continue post-patch because conditioning (and DNA updates) should have an effect on shooting. AND... there also appears to be a 'protective force field' around shooters that can make it next to impossible to properly close out or get a good contest on long range shots at times. This was in Live 09 and appears to still be in Live 10 to a degree. I wouldn't mind seeing this go.

Now, probably my biggest pre-patch gripe... Why aren't fouls being called when there is contact on drives? One way or the other the refs MUST blow the whistle! When I have numbers on the break, and the defense has to bump me on my attack, I EXPECT TO GO TO THE LINE - NOT BLOW A LAYUP AND WATCH THE OTHER TEAM TAKE OFF THE OTHER WAY!! NOT COOL Live... NOT COOL at all... Live 10 has no problem calling ticky-tack reach-ins (at an acceptable rate I might add) soooo why not call a foul when you get clobbered on a lay-up attempt? We know Live has plenty, and some good, contact animations. Can we please attach some realistic foul logic to these moments?

So, all in all, i really enjoy the online experience. The off-ball control is stellar and despite the pre-patch issues, Live 10 offers a wide array of play styles suitable to most any bball gamer. I like playing against inside bangers, long-range chuckers, one-man-gangers... you name it... Live 10 will let you try your hand at some really varied approaches.

I'm sure I'll have a final word around Thanksgiving when the game is patched and the DNA is in full swing... 'Till then...

Mike... Steph... Hook up the game with the much needed patches and you'll have a classic on your hands!

Whatever happened to controllable layups? Are they in?

Had games where I stunk from beginning to end. Had games where we were both hot. games both cold and everything in between.

One thing that I think has to be accounted for when your talking about issues like this with live is their mantra of every possession being different. That means there are a ton of variables.

For instance are you playing the celtics or the twolves... Their defense and defensive ratings will have a lot to say about any runs you go on or the types of shots you get.

With emphasis on shot release timing this year. How well do you know the team your shooting with ? How well do you know where those guys like to score ? How deep is your understanding of the mismatches and do you know the playbook well enough to exploit them ?

How good is your individual team defense. Do you have a gameplan or you just guarding everyone the best you can ?

Can you recognize the adjustments the cpu has made to stop what you were doing successfully earlier in the game.

Once you recognize that do you have the personnel to beat their new scheme ?

Did you loose concentration after you got a lil lead. did you get sloppy ? If your playing 12 min games do you have a plan to score with your second unit. ?

All of these are legitimate questions in live 10. This is what I meant by saying its a cerebral game.

If we all handle these situations differently then we will all have a different experience with the game. The depth in live 10 is not about animations thats why I said if you want a game to look at this ain't it. the depth in live 10 is that you Must play each possession with purpose to win consistently.

That is why playing 12 min qtrs is not a chore. Its the same challenge our favorite teams face 82 games a year. Can we execute our gameplan tonight for 48 minutes ? Can we adjust to the adjustments the opposing coach will make tonight ?

Gamplay wise live 10 is deep water. Its not perfect as I have said all along. But can anyone who can stomache the lack of animations actually tell me that after 48 minutes of intense gameplay the positives don't well outweigh the negatives ?

In fact the thing you might be most pissed about won't be that warp you saw, in most , not all but most instances its that forced drive or that errant pass that cost you the ball game that has you ready to que it up again and go at it.

Great post, and pretty much how I feel.

Except that for me, after getting beaten down in a 48 minute game, I am eager to fire it up again and run it back..to get beaten down again...lol.

I swear, Im going to fire up a cigar after my 1st victory.

Re: Official NBA Live 10 Impressions Thread

I agree with Czar as well plus there are a few things I find interesting:

CPU Blocks- I see guys complaining about this but the first thing I think when I see it is the user was taking a shot close enough to the defender to actually get blocked. Whether it gets blocked or not this is generally a bad shot. I thought the name of the game was to get open shots and only elite players make the challenged ones but even they don't do it at high %'s. Kobe is great not because he shoots in everyone's face but because no one can check him good enough to actually be in his face (most of the time). Then when they actually do get it right (which is rare) he hits anyway. Record any NBA game and take note how often an offensive player takes a shot with the defender in position to block it, most of the time if he does it get's blocked. Now if the CPU is jumping from 10 virtual feet away and blocking a shot then there's a problem, but I don't see that. When I get mad about CPU blocks it's usually that I've fell in love with my favorite player's highlight reel and I am trying to replicate the moments not considering how many shots that are not clipped into that reel just to get the one that is.

Steals in the paint (not including off rebounding cause that is a problem)- Kinda the same thing. If you go running into the paint and lose the ball that means... someone was in the paint! Probably more than one person, and in most case 3 or more. That means there is a lot of open mid-range jumpers to be had with the extra pass. Also with 2 or more defenders in the paint there isn't a lot of open space to dribble in anywy which is why guys (like Da_Czar) say you only get one bounce then you better be air-borne and that one bounce should have been taken with a plan to get air-borne. I do think that on offensive rebounding you lose the ball too quickly especially since there is no control to "not bring the ball down" as big men are instructed to do.

Steals in general- losing balls out in space usually are from trying to do something your player isn't capable of or with a defender close by you are swinging the ball around in wild crossovers and such that expose the ball.

Challenged jumpers still hitting- like the poster that mentioned the high number of contested 3's discovered online, Live doesn't automatically make the user miss just because you were in good position and put your hands up (that may be a flaw in the game IMO) but they will miss every time if you get the proper timing and this varies along with your proximity to the shooter. For the most part it seems that pressing the block button when the shot is directly over the defender is the proper timing. If you are right up on the shooter it tends to be right as you see the shooter release the shot. Playing with my Nephew (who I like to refer to as Mayor McCheese) he likes to spam the 3 ball. He's good at figuring out the proper timing release for shot and was killing me with Boston. He got so good he was regularly hitting 3's with Rondo. Once I figure out the timing to contesting shots though I could just give him extra space to protect against penetration and just jump at the appropriate time and his 3pt % dropped to around 10% so he quit playing with me, LOL.

Speaking of penetration I already know that I can't completely stop anyone even Yao Ming (exaggeration) off the dribble so what I do is check behind me to see where my team mate is that's guarding someone in the paint and I try to guard or cut off the side of the offensive player that's opposite my team mate in the paint so that if he makes it all the way to the paint he'll end up driving into a double team sandwich. In other words I try to take away the all options except driving towards my big man and this works 90% of the time on the drive especially against Mayor McCheese! If the offensive player pulls up for the J I try to attack his shooting hand, this is 100% proof but it is very effective in lowering FG% and tends to force the extra pass to catch me off guard, kinda like IRL!

high % of contact shots going in- When defending the contact shot you still have to use the same philosophy of challenging jumpers that you are right on top of the defender. I wait for the animation to play out and push towards the hand the offensive player is shooting with and press block just as he is releasing the ball you won't see a new animation but you will the shooter human or CPU miss. It works like a charm and I tend to see contact shots go in on me about 10% of the time and only with elite players.

I did not mean this as a slight to anyone so please don't take it as that. I am thoroughly enjoying this game and hoped to help anyone that is seeing these little nagging problems.

                Wow. going old school style!

But yea good analogy. Its true. One time i drove to the basket I ended up down a corridor with a sword wielding Orcus waiting at the end. I had a potion, so i escaped somewhat unscathed [went to the foul line].
Another time I chose left and ran into a giant centaur [Shaq]. Was killed instantly.
Lastly I moved right, and brought the funk on a nasty dunk on Chris Mihm.
                Take THAT Succubus!

In the end I saved the princess [D'antoni] and brought peace to the valley [westchester]

Alright I've had enough. 2/22 from 3 pts. 16 of which were wide open. The 2 drained were end of quarters when I was draped.

Time to tinker with the sliders.

Three point % shooting is what it is, the DNA controls it. Who were you shooting with and like has been said earlier, it could certainly happen. You live and die with the three if you choose.

It's been 7 games of the same thing. The last four I played with the Raptors and I had Calderon-Bargnani-Turkoglu-Belinelli all take open threes. Only a couple went in. Hellalame.

your tip on starting the lay up outside of the lane makes it much better. i have to say it is refreshing having to have to actually think while playing the game. i have had a lot of different types of outcomes and i like that a lot. B Davis is a beast going to the hole. thanks Czar.

Hey guys....Loving this years Live, but am struggling HORRIBLY in the post......Do you have to perform a move everytime you're in the post with a big?? What I mean by this is I would think I should be able to hit a few shots simply by turning and shooting or turning and hooking....Just seems like if I have my back to the basket and shoot a baseline fade jumper it NEVER goes in...What's the best way to score inside and utilize your bigs?? Any help would be very appreciated

I dont have any problems hitting the open 3 point shot with Nash, Richardson and Barbosa. I probably hit 30-35% of my attempts which I think is very accurate. I play on All-Star level.

Well my copy just ate it. I think my last game in Live (Bucks (aka Jennings/Redd/Bell) vs. Blazers (BRoy/Outlaw/Aldridge/Oden/Dre/etc.) was so infuriating that the despair of having my NBA game, one that i've spent the last couple months agonizing over and anticipating, fatally scratched by my 360 moving hasn't yet hit me. It will.
