There are a lot of really good ideas being put out there, and I wanted to thank everyone who has offered up a suggestion. I really mean that. We may very well use some of the suggestions that have been made here.

I'll give you guys a more detailed rundown of everything once we've made a final decision, but at this point we're still doing some tests and debating the merits of a few different approaches.

Thanks for the passion you guys show for basketball video games. It makes our jobs that much more satisfying.
thanks reanimator. i was pretty sure that a lot of people think that early release going long is best, but it was nice to see confirmation from the poll. it's over 2:1 right now in favor of early release long and late release short, most of the posts in this thread are from people who feel strongly that early release should i go long. i personally feel very strongly about it, but i support you guys in whatever decision you make. thanks for keeping in touch with the fans.

i also wanted to mention (and this isn't a threat) that if the power meter is not changed, this game will be a rental for me instead of a purchase. i don't know if i will be able to adjust to a ridiculously unrealistic power meter, so i don't want to waste 60 bucks.

but once again, i support your decision.

        wow

take a step back and realize we're playing a virtual representation of basketball and at the end of the day, it's a video game....have fun and enjoy it as such.

          wow
all i said is that im going to rent before i buy because of the ridiculously unrealistic power meter. If they made the power meter realistic i would preorder right now.

and i did take a step back, and what did i realize?

i realized that this is is supposed to be a sim basketball game NOT wii sports resort basketball.

then where do we draw this arbitrary line that defines what is sim and not sim? we can make all sorts of arguments of what is "sim" or not, and that will also vary from user to user. Somebody can argue that pressing O to pass is more sim than pressing X. Some people believe that using the R stick to shoot is more sim than pressing a face button.

"Simulation is the imitation of some real thing, state of affairs, or process. The act of simulating something generally entails representing certain key characteristics or behaviours of a selected physical or abstract system."

as someone said before in this thread, get away from your computer screen, stop looking up the word simulation on wikipedia (yes i know how to use wiki), and go outside and shoot a basketball. the argument is whether you want a realistic power meter or not, not if early release going long is more realistic/sim. early release going long is more realistic/sim and there is no debate on that matter.

Isn't it more about the form the player uses than how long he holds the ball before releasing? I've seen Shawn Marion shoot short. I've seen Marcus Camby shoot long.

It's about the form, not the release time. This thread just has not made sense to me because it doesn't follow basketball logic. If I go out and shoot right now, I'm shooting based on how I lift off the ground, how I arch my arms and all of it determines the time I spend with the ball.

In my opinion, the developers should make each power meter relative to the player.

                End of story.

each person does have their own sweet spot obviously lol. there is a sweet spot for each shooter and this thread was made to see what most people would like the result of an early/late release to be. obviously when shooting a basketball there are a lot of things that go into whether the shot goes short or long, and you can definitely release the shot early and still miss short. However, in this game the system works that there is a sweet spot and depending on how you miss time it, the shot will go long or short. This is definitely simplifying shooting, but is necessary. The idea you haven't understood is that early release going long makes alot more sense than early release going short basketball wise.
here is proof if you want it:

                    start listening at 1:15.

Does this thread make sense to you now? or do you have better "basketball logic" than pete maravich?

                    lol

Shooting long has nothing to do with your release point, it has to do with power... if you assume you are putting maximum power with your legs and arms and have a perfect jump shot, both 'imperfect' releases will yield a shorter shot.

But their idea makes sense. Short is short, long is long... and maybe after a point long becomes short again. If it was short is long then people would be tapping the button and the ball would be flying through the backboard.

This isn't about who "wins." It's a discussion. You don't have to agree but you don't have to act like this. You're not any more "right" than he is.

Stop this bickering. This is your only warning.
