Defensive Tips Thread

I'd like to officially start a defensive thread. Everything seems to lean toward offense on these boards and because Live has definitely improved it's defense engine, we should talk about it?

For me, I'm having problems intercepting passes. The CPU AI can always get in my passing lanes and pick of passes but I can't. Does anybody know how to? I've tried getting in the passing lanes and hitting the steal button AND using the freestyle control (with the stick down or shifting left and right) and I can't seem to steal. Sometimes, it seems like the defensive freestyle control is purely a cosmetic feature and adds no real practical effect. Any tips?

Ive found that I have the best success intercepting inbounds passes. When I have a guy with a good steal rating I step in front of the intended receiver and press square. With exact timing, you can do pretty well. When the cpu has the ball in the offensive set, the same holds true. Ive found that you have to be moreso closer to the pass receiver than in the middle or by the pass thrower. Id have to agree with you to an extent about the freestyle thing being cosmetic as far as the defend shot feature though (up on right stick). I think that is meant to be used as help defense, because if you use that in one-on-one situations it does nothing.

Does hitting buttons on the controller during the double team do anything? Or is it already predetermined?

Maybe it has to do with ratings of the players (offensive awareness of ballhandler and steal, defensive awareness of double teamers)

Don't get me started with the double teams. I think it's pre-determined. Even though that sucks, I think the strength of the double team is that you have to direct switch to someone close by to pick up the loose ball and on the flipside you have to use the direct control of another player on offense to make sure that there isn't a turnover. Even though I find it annoying that the double team animation seems preset, I like that you have complete control over who gets the looseball. That's cool.

I'm having trouble stopping fastbreaks...it seems as if the computer gets a 5 second head start on fast breaks and my players are too slow to catch up, and what results is two points.

Also the pre-determined defense animations are bugging me, I like to have total control of my players. I don't there's a way to stop the pre-determined animations but what are some tips on playing good defense with this preset defense?
