Re: Time for LIVE to step up the graphics

I remember on Lakers vs. Celtics. On there, the player likeness added so much to the game. Bird has his golden blond hair, Jordan was Bald, most players skin tones were exact, the hieghts were proportioned correctly, the courts all had the proper team colors, etc.

The point is, that graphics do have a role to play in ppls decisions. Put it like this, if EA was'nt the big name that it is today, neither is VC, which game do you think would of sold the most coppies by now based on Screen Shots and movies alone? Easy answer right?

Ugly graphics are defetnitly not a game killer but as monkey started the post, the graphics do have a big role in a game being more "sim" then a cartoonish looking game with good gameplay.

On that note, I'm not a graphic whore,(a closet graphic whore, yes) but I would rather put gameplay over graphics but sometimes, the graphics NEED to be up to par in order to enjoy the game more. My prime example is the High Heat series.

Its like choosing a ugly girl with a good personality and smarts versus a fine girl with a stuck up personality and is dumb as a rock. Believe it or not, alot of fellows would choose the fine looking female.

Re: Time for LIVE to step up the graphics

I'm actually a little tired of people using quotes like "graphics arent' that important" or "I'd rather have good gameplay than good graphics" these all, in regards to EA games, are excuses. EA and most all other game companies have different teams that work on certain aspects of the game. There are separate teams for graphics, gameplay, animation, sound, bugs, etc. The pooreness in the graphics of Live 2004 and every other past game for that matter has nothing to do with the sacrafice for good gameplay. The gameplay/animation team works on the gameplay and the graphics team works on the graphics of the game. Just because the graphics have been poor in recent and past lives does not mean that it is the fault of the gameplay department. The blame must be drawn solely on the graphics team. Their only job is to work on the graphical aspect of the game and they have become really complacent with the graphics they have had for the past 3-4 years. It's unexcusable to have the same poor graphics for this many years and not change them that much even with the drastic improvement in graphics for other companies. EA has more money and probably better talent than most of the other sports game companies and they still have not fixed the issue with the graphics in these games. Gameplay is something that is apparent from the get-go. Gameplay is "expected" to be good and as real to life as possible. Gameplay should not even be an issue when thinking of sports games, it is the basis of how a game should be played and represented. I feel that the graphics team just isn't fully doing their jobs and need to get off their arses and stop having the mindset of "it doesn't matter, people will buy it anyway." That's not the mindset of a true sports game and videogame developer in general. Real sports powerhouses want to dominate over the competetion in "every" faucet of the game, not just some. I'll admit that the graphics in 2004 aren't that bad at all, but they should be much better considering the power of these next generation systems. This pertains to the lack of attention towards more powerful systems such as the Xbox as well.

Funny thing is, this is the exact same scenario in the whole Winning Eleven vs. FIFA debate. FIFA fans would much rather have the fine *** graphic whore FIFA with empty gameplay instead of the somewhat uglier but incredibly stunning gameplay of Winning Eleven...

Re: Time for LIVE to step up the graphics

I TOTALLY agree with Monkey's comments, here are some thoughts on graphics, not gameplay:

                  - No 16 x 9 support WTFO!!!!!!!!! Year 2004 this should be a STANDARD!
                  - Why only 480p why not push the boundaries of the XBOX and do ala ESPN at 720p
                  - EA absolutely REFUSES or THEY ARE TOO LAZY to EVER change player models, Madden and Live have the same rehashed models for the last couple of years.
                  - I'm tired of hearing how much time this game was in development, they fixed and added alot but come on people they didn't redo the damn thing, Redwood has a ENORMOUS development staff and they should be able to bring the graphics up to par or even best Sega's offering.
                  - They rest on their laurels, if we didn't have Sega pushing EA, we would still be seeing efforts like the last two NBA Lives and last year's March Madness.
                  - They need to get rid of the cartoon look and bring in a whole new level of realism, SEGA's player models DESTROY EA's it's comical the comparison!
                  - Need new fans how many Fu*king times are they going to put carboard cut out fans in the stand, look at ESPN NCAA 2K4, NOW there's a crowd.
                  - Stadiums are blah for the most part, some look great other look ignored, blurry textures and generic look and feel.
                  - Not enough variety in player models.
                  - Hardly any use of Bump Mapping, Mip Mapping, Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, Vertex type shader support etc...

                  - BOTTOM LINE EA should rebuild the game engine for NBA Live and MM 2005, they are going to wait for the next consoles to arrive the PS3 and XBOX, to me that is an OUTRAGE, fans have paid $50 bucks for inferior looking games for the last 4 years now, it's time for EA to step up, SEGA is breathing down their throats, BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get it? The graphics are only "Eye Candy". Sure there are Games that look good, like in that pretty girl senario. But I just don't understand the bashing going on here about a Game that has IMO come to realize that oily shiny look just wasn't cuttin' it in their attempt to mimic sweat so they got rid of it.

Now in doing that we've been givin' a much more improved look to the players that are much more improved than last years. Don't you guys even give "EA SPORTS" credit for at least making that change?

No I dont give EA Credit as you say, it's their damn job to enhance and produce a quality top notch product, why does NCAA support 16 x 9 but not Live 2004. All the other issues I pointed out, I really liked live this year but bottom line Sega pours their souls in to making their games look realistic and completey update the XBOX verion with 720p and better lighting and textures.

-IMO I hope that EA is dethrowned in the sales area which forces them to put out a quality looking title for next year, EA is all about sales, for YEARS on the SNES and Genesis they merely TOUCHED up the graphics and changed the rosters and pushed it out the door, I hope they go down with the ship myself, if they don't change their ways!
