They did not completely rework the engine after 2002. Coding definitely moved over.
MVP Baseball was a complete coding change. NBA Live was not.
Just listen to the public address announcer - exactly the same phrasing. Code moved over.
    Especially the awful rebounding code.

That said, I love NBA Live 2004.

Trust me, the code was reworked. Reusing archived announcer speech is meaningless, and independent of source code. It just means they used some of the same audio formats and perhaps some reuse of the audio libraries. Big deal. Just look at the difference in the player models, and the habits of the gameplay. Everything is much different than before. I have also seen how the organization of the data file structure has changed over the years. This is not possible without a complete revamp of some of the code.

I have to say, I have really been getting into this game over the past few days and find that the animations, ball flow and amount of 1 on 1 isolation moves are fantastic in this game BUT therebounding engine in this game is just plain simplistic and poorly implemented!

First off, the balls will caromb off the rim and hit the floor too much. Offensive players will make no attempts to jump up at the boards to try and attack the ball off the rim or the backboard.....they seam to either quickly clear out or just outright stand in place watching as a shot carombs off the boards or rim simply watching a defensive member come up with the rebound. There is no ball movement around the rim and players fighting for the loose boards to grab at it or tap it in.....This part of the game is severely lacking in an otherwise very polished game

What do you think about this???

I agree with you completely. The problem in this game is that the coding is lazy. Instead of adding more animations so that defenders can play realistically, they just souped up the defense in the game. There is no way in the NBA that a player is ALWAYS off balance to the point he can't get a put back. There is no way a Center should be able to run down a streaking fast guard and - get this - be able to keep up with his fake out moves. There is no way that offensive players just watch the ball and don't go for the rebound. Really, it's not that hard to program realistic play in if you have a team of developers. Yet it seems that this and other sports games resort to cheating instead of making the game play more realistically. Even if you favor defenders, for example, at least have the offense trying for the rebound. It's just ridiculous and makes no sense. Plus, we won't even mention the terrible user interface in this game. However, I feel the only problem in the game is the rebounding and suped-up defensive play. Also, you almost never get an open shot. The second you get the ball...someone is on you. It's not like that in the NBA. You get some open shots. The result is that you're always trying to drive to the hoop to score. I feel that if they fix these problems, the game will be awesome - bar none.
When the game is on the line, winners want the ball.

            Re: The REBOUNDING is terrible!

I agree with you Zone on all your points. I am hoping that EA at least addresses the horrid Offensive Rebounding on the PC version with a PATCH. I know the Madden PC team made gameplay fixes in updated patches so I am hoping the nba ea team can do the same. Right now the lack of any offensive rebounding or attacking the boards is literally killing a great basketball game!

Alot of other things also that people mentioned here also need to be addressed and tweaked as well but I can at least live with it for now.
Things such as the canned auto motion captured double team scripted feel that will always result in the ball squirting loose on the floor if held onto for a few seconds too long.

The accurate torpedo full court bullet passes. ect, ect.

This game still is alot of fun to play and has the best playable video game basketball sensation of any basketball game to date.

They won't be able to fix offensive rebounding with a patch Lisa. It's unfortunate, but true.

Have you set your strategies on crash boards to on?

                  It helps a little.

With the PC version, make sure you set your opponent's playbook to a specific strategy, rather than 'dynamic'. If it's set to a specific strategy, say 'utah', the team won't fast break all the time.
