    Official Live 06.. graphics POLL

Imagine Live 06.. improved upon every aspect of 05 with even better animations and the full works... Im pretty sure for next year they are going to start fixing the graphics to try to take over espn in that department also. Now I had an idea.. If you have played espn, you eventually realize that shiny looking players are not that jaw dropping... The sweat effect is cool, but the whole ky jelly thing doesn't look to good to me.. Now imagine LIVE 06 with Cel Shaded Graphics... The idea is that they make the courts realistic, but the players Cel Shaded... Think Ghost in the Shell type of thing.. Cel Shaded Graphics would allow the artists to get the exaggerations of the NBA players looks... They could still do lighting tricks and shadows and all that good stuff.. but on Cel Shaded Player Models... I think this mix of realistic Environment with Cel Shaded players would make a very interesting mix... Now face it, we are limited with graphics, and if LIVE 06 tries to go towards the realistic direction, its not gonna go too far.. but in this direction it could offer something totally different than the other NBA game....LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. WE COULD MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

No, I like the direction the graphics are headed towards.

Heres another example of another game character done in cel shading... If the shadows and colors are done correctly, it can look really awesome...

God, I hope not. Leave that kind of thing for NBA street, which I think would apply this idea much better over there.

Cel-shading is kind of a fad right now in games. Once shader technology moves more and more progressively along as it currently is, we'll start to see the more complex algorithms for doing lighting and shading of human skin (e.g. subsurface light scattering) in realtime environments. Already in the upcoming generations of new consoles, we are starting to see improvements.

IF you really LOOK CLOSELY (especially on the Xbox) NBA LIVE 05 already has a bit of CELL SHADING in it.
Try using a ZOOMED in , SIDELINE view on the xbobx version. You'll see that it has a bit of cell shading.

Im pretty sure that the "shiny" effect that a lot of people hate is a result of semi Cell-Shading. I like it though.

Semi-Cell shading is not noticeable on the PS2 except on the cutscenes when you call a timeout.

FULL Cell shading would still be a big difference. It might look cool though but it would make Live look really arcady.

Thats actually not cel (spelled with one "L") shading, but it works on the same principle, which is pixel shading. Cel shading is purposefully doing silhouettes and edge detection and other things to make it look like a cartoon.

They tried to use pixel shading in order to make skin look more like skin, which they did an ok job, except for one thing that really bugs me. That has to do with hair. The hair has the same algorithm applied to it as the skin! So a guy with a small layer of hair on his head will basically look bald because his hair is reflecting the surrounding light sources at the same amount as the skin. Looks bad, IMO.

Case in point, look at the top of Carmelo and Camby's head in this picture. You see that reflective glow?

How would it look Arcadey if the animations are done nicely... Like Prince of Persia, He is cartoony, but he moves so well that he is more believable than most game characters. I just think it would be cool, cuz why do you wanna mimick the exact look of real players. No matter how good the technology gets, its not going to look "real" for a while. Just my opinion.
