Re: Official Live 06.. graphics POLL

I kind of like the idea.. if the gameplay is there and it looks cool, im all for it. it can't be over the top with animations. I have a feeling once the go the cartoon looking route, they may take the gameplay with them.

Is it kind of like vector " effects ". I've seen some vector work with photoshop, case in point or similar to this type of effect:

Vector graphics is something totally different, that has to do with 2D graphics and were talking about 3D graphics here.

All that vector graphics means is that pieces of the image are rescalable because they are based on geometric formulas. For example, you could use a font with vector graphics and be able to stretch and contort that font on the image any way you see fit. The other type of graphics is raster graphics, like bitmaps, where you cant resize any particular part of the image, you can only resize and rescale the entire image. Any font you put on a bitmapped image is basically "stamped" on there and you cant resize it again after the fact, you can only draw over it.

You could achieve the same cartoonish effect in your Shaq picture with a bitmapped image as well. What makes it vector graphics is the size and position of the fonts, etc.

The shading algorithm is the important thing in what were talking about.

EDIT: Oh, BTW, Shaq has the wrong jersey number in that picture. Not important, just thought you oughta know.

The best cel shading is Jet Set Radio Future on Xbox (my favourite game). The poly models are really quite low but the shading and simply superb animation makes it look awesome. It might be interesting for something like Street but I doubt a big 'sim' type franchise like Live would ever go there. Actually if I remember right Street 2's menu's had a city/buildings in the background that were cel shaded.

Oh and here's a good example of keeping the reflections on someone's hair too, looks glassy or oily

Yea, but that one's for a different reason...environment mapping. Very cool picture, looks real, but then again, environment mapping makes any truly reflective object look real.

It's actually a simple reflection channel

And I don't think it looks real, skin, hair and cloth isn't reflective

Reflection channel and environment mapping are related. Reflection channel means how much intensity, if any at all, is each vertex reflecting the surrounding environment. The environment map is the actual "picture" that is being reflected.

I meant looking real as far as looking like a glass statue of a dunking basketball player. The depth of field blurred image of the grass in the background helps to sell the reality quite well, I think. The hoop and all that still look too CGish, though. One interesting thing I notice is the reflection of the arm on the backboard, you can see the collapse of the arm on the inside of the elbow joint, which is the most noticeable problem of using skeletal subspace deformation for skinning.

But do you fellaz realize that xbox 2 might be out around this time next year. If so then what. Which way will they go. Most likely the xbox 2's version will be a slight graphical upgrade as the ps2 and xbox will be the focus. But just imagine how it could look if they put some effort into it. If any of you seen the new morrowind shots they you know what it can be capable of.

Live graphics are not a matter of technology right now. They are not at all pushing the hardware, in other words.
