Re: ID2003 vs NBA2k3!! Pros and Cons of each

It's been said a million times...but to add something new...in ID2003 you see a guy like Reggie, AW, AI coming off a screen and think "nooooooooooo" and sure enough the CPU finds him. You see Shaq with a miss match...and pay for it before you can recover.

In 2K3, the CPU is so programmed you can sleep on Reggie. AW, AI etc and leave them unguarded at times.

Against this...2k3 is much, much better for atmosphere. Actually, make that much, much, much, much better.

If ID can add the atmosphere...it's no contest.

Re: ID2003 vs NBA2k3!! Pros and Cons of each

Well, the fouls in ID 2003 are MUCH better after having done a few things. Now I'm getting 16 - 30 free throw attempts per game (well, at least that's after just two games, but still great nonetheless). I'm still perfecting it, but it seems like it's better if you try to increase the block and steal ratings for the cpu, decrease them for you, make the cpu's shooting better than you (thereby forcing you to foul more to keep them from scoring so much). By increasing the block and steal ratings for the cpu, it may make them more likely to attempt blocks on you, which means that they'll try to block shots more aggressively, or swipe at the ball more aggressively. This causes more fouls if you play it right. Also, you have to increase the player speed, and when driving you'll get more blocking fouls called. in the past two games I've had stackhouse shoot around 18 and 10 free throws respectively. That's a HUGE increase from only 2-3 until now. While you can easily attempt over 100 shots in a game, the average number of shot attempts in an NBA game are around 80, because most times the players try to drive to the basket, pump fake a LOT, and try to punish the defense for their defensive mistakes and get 3-point plays. So that's the way I'm approaching it now and my assists totals are down a lot, and my free throw attempts are up by a lot. Still working on this aspect in ID 2003, but if I can get this aspect to work, then this game may just be ALMOST PERFECT for me.

I'm definetly going to try out ID2003, but I played ID 2002, and almost immediately lost respect for that game that had so many issues with every aspect of the game. Fortunately I'm not a fanboy or I'd have written down all those nitpicks, though sometimes I wish I had.

It greatly surprised me that ID 2002 was actually respected. So I'm not exactly trusting of ID zealots. Especially when they fail to define things like what flow is. I guess I have to play the game myself, and if it's good, I'll buy it on the cheap.

Well, the game's sliders certainly help a LOT more in customizing the game. I'll admit I'm an ID zealot now, but I was turned off ID 2002 because of the excessive blocking, and charging fouls by the AI. Those were its two major problems. Graphically, the game's not that much better, but gameplay wise, it's a huge improvement over ID 2002, IMHO. Gameplay is the most important aspect for me, and ID 2003 has the best gameplay that I've seen in a b-ball game so far. Rent the game first if you do plan on checking it out, but play it for more than 10 games, because that's the only way you'll get a true feel of how the game is. At least, that's my advice.

As for whatever problems you had with ID 2002, I'd be interested in hearing them. Listing your problems doesn't make you a fanboy as long as they're reasonable problems that come from playing the game for an extended period of time.

I wouldn't be surprised if you had problems with ID2002. I enjoyed the game but I think it's fair to say that the game was too fast, there were too many steals, and way too many blocks. I think that would turn off anyone.

But ID2003 obviously fixes those problems. And I mean FIXES those problems. I see around 3 blocks a game per team and maybe 6 steals a game per team. You'll have your outliers on occassion. But when I say occassion, I really mean it's a rarity. I've played the game many times and only once have I stolen the ball more than 3 times with one player. But you also have sliders to adjust it to your liking. I personally, bring down the steals slider. But the default is also not that bad.

By flow, what exactly are you asking? I'm assuming you mean when people say, "the flow of the game is great!"

By that, I believe people are tryin to say that the game feels like an NBA game. The players move around, setting picks, screens, looking to get open. You'll see a guy cutting down the baseline or through the lane. Shooters will run around the baseline and spot themselves for an open three point shot.

Basically the flow is fluid. It doesn't seem robotic. I actually haven't felt like there are a bunch of robots out there on the screen.

The point is this. When you see the computer on offense perform moves that you yourself perform, then that's when you feel everything is alright. There have been several basketball games where I would find myself doing things to find an open shot, or create room from the defender that I would never see the CPU try. But in ID2003, the CPU plays just as realistically. Especially with guys capable of doing such things.

One game I had against the Magic, Tracy McGrady was doing things I never thought the CPU was capable of pulling. I doubled team him at one point in the game, and now most games would force the player to pass it out or do some very stupid thing like attempt a jump shot that would obviously be blocked by anyone. But in this sequence, McGrady just faked twice and then pulled a fade away jumper, while falling to his left - so as to avoid the bigger defender on his right - and two points.

But like the post above stated, rent the game first. And play it about 10 times. THis is a game you need to get into to really respect it.

you really should just look at the million posts already made...most like me don't feel like writing 100 things out again.

in short, ID has better overall cpu gameplay but the graphics, animation and atmosphere leave much to be desired. 2k3 has online play and is great in graphics, animation and atmosphere but doesn't match up in cpu gameplay. To me the decision comes down to mostly single player (ID) or multiplayer (2k3) but that's just me. If you want more details do a search.

Good points wwharton. I think that's why most website reviewer's gave NBA2k3 their favorite choice for a b-ball title. While NBA2k3's AI gameplay falls short of ID2003 Ai gameplay, ID2003 just doesn't quite match-up in the other areas with NBA2k3. I have both games and IMO they both are great games, but if I had to choose, I would go with the game that offers me more and that would be NBA2k3 hands down. Sure the AI gameplay may not be as strong as the gameplay in ID2003. But that is what XBOX Live is for...against another human in most cases it's unpredictable. You really can't go wrong with either game.
