So 2k wants to use college basketball in a mode in order to continue to fleece us huh. No thanks! I wouldn’t even play it.

Sounds like 2k is trying to screw EA and grab schools individually to probably make a dlc tournament mode and not a whole game. I want a whole game this is a garbage move by 2k

Yeah, I'm not interested in a MyTeam College mode from 2k. But, I'm not sure how worthwhile an exclusive is for a college game when EA has clearly shown they aren't committing to an annual release. Especially when they were willing to drop the exclusive NFL license

And 2K messes it up for everyone. They admitted their mode was going to be a Bare Bones DLC for MyPlayer/MyTeam (No Dynasty Mode, Nothing more than the 64 teams that make the tournament, if that.) They'll do that, it won't sell and they'll proclaim "there's no market for College Basketball" and it'll go away for 15-20 more years. I knew when the bidding war started it was just one trying to stymie the other. 2K has no plans on creating a college game as a whole.

In a way, I wasn't as high on an EA CBB game just because EA would need to create a Basketball engine from scratch in 3 years along with a full fledged game. I felt 2k was better suited because they could follow the EA CFB route of working off the Madden engine. But, if 2k is going to do this, I would hope it is a full fledged game not a DLC for MyTeam.

I would actually want EA to get back into the NBA Live market. Develop a basketball engine for a NBA game, then a couple yesrs later, go after a CBB game

I'll bet this is correct - it seems pretty clear 2K does not want to make a full standalone college hoops game, otherwise they'd have just come out and said that they intend to do so (vs the slippery vague language about being involved with college basketball). Their proposal during the bidding process pretty much laid out their plans, and now that there's no competition, it seems they will proceed with that plan unfettered.

Of course any add-on, half-baked college 'features' in the NBA2K product will not do well. That's like releasing a 12-team college playoff DLC for 'Madden' and then when it inevitably failed to set the world on fire, claiming that that is somehow 'evidence' that there is no market for a college football game.

I miss the days of arguing about the quality of these games, rather than the business dealings surrounding them...

This has all been disappointing. I have no interest in what 2k looks like they're going to give us.

2K pretty much confirmed they aren't making a standalone college basketball game. Pathetic turn of events for those of us that really wanted to see a college basketball game.

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’m actually okay with what is happening and here is why.

Sure EA was committing to a game with ALL teams but the proposal did not seem realistic. First off, the game was looking at a 2028 release at best and considering their schedule with CFB and timeline of new consoles, it seemed reasonable for a 2029 release. In addition, they would have to build a basketball engine from scratch which is not their forte to begin with. Lastly, if anyone here thought it would be realistic to have the authenticity of 700+ programs, I think that feels unrealistic, especially out of the gate.

Now, with that said, here’s what I like about 2k. First off they have a solid basketball engine. Yes, the microtransactions have become a problem but they’re never going away. According to Mike Straw, there WILL be a standalone game but they’re easing into it, which I think is a good thing. We’re going to get a college basketball experience in 2026 and 2027 which is far ahead of schedule of EA. In addition, the feedback through socials has begun pressuring 2k into a full game. This timeline gives consumers a chance to dip our toes in while giving 2k realistic expectations on what they will invest in the game. And by this timeline, there is a realistic chance 2k has all teams by 2028, again something Mike Straw has said.

in conclusion, I think we all want a college game, so we all need to support the path that gives us that chance. Ideally this would happen overnight and with a concrete plan, but the path forward is much more promising than months ago imo

EA has said how the stadium rendering process took the longest time when it came to CFB. College basketball arenas are likely not as strenuous to render, but we're likely talking 3 times as much stadiums. That's not talking about traditions/pageantry, mascots. That was on top of building off the Madden engine. I don't think the NBA Live engine is a viable option. The last one came out 7 years ago and they mentioned building for next gen. I would like to EA come back to NBA Live first anyway. I don't think their NBA Live fully expired yet since Live Mobile is active.

I wonder how profitable the MyTeam/UT model is for a CBB game. I feel most of the NBA stars weren't College stars and most of the college basketball legends aren't as recognizable as College Football legends. Is someone like Tyler Hansbrough, Jimmer Fredette, Adam Morrison, Emeka Okafor, etc that recognizable to the casual fan. So, I would hope 2k would put more emphasis on a Dynasty and single player mode than trying to MTX sales. I don't know how viable a Park theme is, unless they make it college theme parks.
