    Re: 6'4 and cant dunk

I am 6'1 and mostly white. I have been able to dunk since I was 16 at 5'10.

The biggest thing is to learn how to jump. I am a one foot glider. I jump best off of one foot and gliding to the rim.

I don't have much explosion upwards so I need to be running to get high enough to dunk.

If you are 6'3 there is no reason not to be able to dunk unless you are young, injured or fat.

Lower your body fat %, increase your leg and most importantly your core strength and then learn how to jump. There are a lot of different ways to get explosion and a lot of that is what you feel comfortable with.

    Good luck!

Wow...harsh...lmao. I feel u tho. Eventhough i have a 40+ vert at 6'3'', when i stand w/o jumping and lift my hands toward the rim, it definitely doesnt 'look' that high or do i feel like need to really put out energy to touch it.

That is freakish. I'd be surprised if 1 out of 100 males could jump that high.

I would bump that number up a lot higher than that. I feel we'd be lucky to come across 1 out of 100 random basketball players that have a legitimate 40 inch vert, let alone the general male population. I understand there's certain regional hotbeds for high risers but I assure you there's just as many regions featuring slews of players not as athletically gifted. A 40 inch vert is indeed quite a rare gift.

I'd also cut some slack in regards to the "6'3'' people should all be dunking unless young, injured, or fat" comment. From what I've seen, a basketball player being able to dunk at 6'3'' is surely not a foregone conclusion. I still feel that specific height is on that general borderline where an above average vertical is still needed to put one down. One's reach and hand size can make a difference but I still feel an above average level of athletic ability would be needed to flush on that height.

Yea, lots of ppl just arent coordinated enough to do it (running, dribbling, holding the ball while looking at rim) or have a lack of technique from not doing 'athletic' things over there lifetime.

I am truly blessed. I was dunking @ 13 and touching the top of the square when i was 15. This was off one leg. No weights (school couldnt afford them), just natural ability. Now, w/ weights??? No comment.lol Im actually afraid when my ability starts to decline...saddens me to a degree, i love the game so much. Cant imagine not playing or not having the ability to not play it well anymore,

My bad. I can't edit my thread, so ill just post again.

I haven't read through the thread, so if someone posted this already, I obviously didn't see it. Google "Air Alert III". It'll have you dunking in no time.

That's not true at all. People like myself, and it sounds like the OP, who didn't do much if any weight training for the legs growing up don't have enough strength in their legs to get up and dunk it. It's an easy fix, it's just time consuming.

I've seen a ton of people 6'3"+ that can't dunk, regardless of how fit they look.

Also, I'd stay away from Air Alert. That program can kill your knees from what I've heard.

I mean for real players. Fat = fat %. People really need to look at their bodies. I gained 25 lbs and it completely changed the way I move on the court. My core is weak and I don't nearly have the hang time I feel I used to.

But at 6'1 195 I look like I am in okay shape to the general population but in reality my 15%+ body fat is like being in Eddy Curry shape.

ANyway I agree that 6'3 is on the border of average vertical ability to dunk. But to me if I had 2 more inches I feel I would have been able to do so much more.

But if you are a serious basketball player I think all people agree that 6'3, under the age of 30 you should be able to dunk. We are not even talking in game dunks here, just dunking.

The guy said he doesn't know how to do a squat, do you really think he's a serious basketball player? No leg training = no dunking. I played basketball for 10 years (quit during high school because of injury) and my coaches didn't have us do any weight training at all so I couldn't dunk. Even at 6'4" I had to work my butt off to be able to.

I learned to jump off one leg and could throw it down with two hands. Now that I'm 33 I don't think I can do it anymore.

Please stop with the "I can't palm the ball" excuses. You don't need to palm the ball to dunk, that's ridiculous.

I agree. I couldn't palm it either. Check out the pic.

                                Q.F.T.

Anybody that tall thats not either a preteen or 26+ (and no longer has sports in thier daily routine) should be able to dunk. And easily.

I'm 5'10 IN SHOES and have short arms and hands the size of a 12 year old girl, and i was able to dunk from 18-23. Now while thats certainly not the norm, i definately throws the "i cant palm" excuse out the window. I could barely palm those little Pizza Hut NCAA balls we used to get back in the day.

Not dunking at 6'4" is pretty unheard of for a non-fat, non too young/too old, brother like yourself...

I think this dudes messin with you guys. Just sayin
