2K is going to win the sales this year, regardless of how good Elite turns out, because 2K is a long-established brand and Elite is just starting out fresh.

Who is saying Elite will outsell 2K?

This is simply Moore at a loss as how to respond. he's usually on his game, but all you have to do is look at Fight Night Round 4 and how that game's cover contradicts what he said. For instance, I could take out Jordan and put in Tyson and Ali in his comments...

"I’m not quite sure what [Ali/Tyson on the cover] signifies, quite frankly," he said. "We haven’t announced our player yet, but we tend to be forward thinking about our franchises. I mean, I’m a huge Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson fan, but in the same way that I don’t put Pelé on the cover of FIFA, we have the young up and coming stars. You’re going to see that again from us with Fight Night. We never went after Ali or Tyson. They have done it; it’s an interesting marketing move to use a retired player. I don’t know how they intend to use it. Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson? Well yeah, greatest boxers to ever play the game. [At the] same time, it's strange for the consumer... what does it signify?"
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

Re: 2K vs Elite talk: "MJ won't matter" - Peter Moore

It's true that MJ doesn't matter in the larger scheme of things. To players who are playing online or players who are putting in countless hours, it's just fluff. But in terms of marketing and casual sales, it makes a huge difference.

I know that this is going to give 2k a huge boost in sales, as if they needed any more. The sad part for me is that now they have spent their money on the MJ stuff... they might be content to stick with basically the same weak-sauce (IMO) game play because people will buy it no matter what.

Edit: I'm reading some of you guys talking about sales. This will be the highest selling 2k basketball game to date. Book it. And they will recoup what they paid out. They aren't stupid. This is no gamble.

So then how does that NOT matter in the larger scheme of things? People seem to forget that that the type of gamer that OS is made up of(hardcore) is still a minority.

If it's making a huge difference in marketing and casual sales, it matters in the larger scheme of things.

I think there is a large number of people - casual and hardcore- who have always wanted to recreate historic games playing as Jordan and the Bulls. So it matters to them and automatically it will matter to sales.

funny to hear this from the same company who has used Muhammad Ali multiple times to market its boxing game. lol some of you are trying to put MJ on the shelf beside Bob Cousie and other dinosaurs of the game. Jordan is very relevant.

It depends on how you define it. When Britney Spears turned from 'virgin' to tramp, it didn't make any difference in the quality or depth of her music, but it did create more sales.

Same idea here. It's not going to make any difference when it comes to NBA 2k11 going down as the greatest basketball game of all time; it's going to get sales.

I hope I'm wrong and they come out with news-worthy gameplay additions and online play, too.

I get what you're saying, MJ has nothing to do with how the game will actually play, and that the gameplay and whatever fixes they implement will ultimately determine if this game is the GOAT.

BUT..for some people it will be the GOAT just because MJ is on the cover. Yes it that serious, for some people. We don't know how long he is going to be working with 2K, we don't know if he'll be in the game for this one year or for the next 10 years, all we know is that he is in the game now.

For some people, that elevates the game to GOAT status by itself. They don't even need to hear anything else because they're going to buy it regardless, just because of MJ. Being able to play with the Bulls, their rivals, and MJ, with all his moves and whatnot will put this game on another level, for some people.

I agree with what you're saying though. For most of us, it still comes down to the game itself and if the feature-set, presentation, and gameplay are GOAT worthy.

Although I am pretty sure most will be satisfied this year.

They have done it; it’s an interesting marketing move to use a retired player. I don’t know how they intend to use it. Michael Jordan? Well yeah, greatest player to ever play the game. [At the] same time, it's strange for the consumer... what does it signify?"
The last part bold just makes me scratch my head. I think Moore is psychoanalyzing everything. What does it signify? It signifies a team of developers that know the heartbeat of their consumer base. A team of developers that "gets it" for a lack of better words. Nothing strange for this consumer at all.
