I tried starting another career legacy over the long weekend, I'm determined to stick with this one for a while.
I used an open legacy though because I like to be able to edit ratings for my team and other teams (most important) throughout the legacy. I also wanted to start with Quinnipiac. Started with the 07-08 rosters.
So I simmed the regular season in year one and got the 8th and final seed in my conference tournament. I got blown out by #1 seed Sacred Heart, it was never really close.
Recruiting was typically poor the for the first year, got high up on the interest meter with tons of "reach" kids but they all signed elsewhere at the last minute. I signed a pair of two-star guys and a three-star JUCO freshman. The Juco kid turned out to be a real diamond in the rough, he was a 76 overall as a sophomore (his first year in my program) and was the third best player in the conference based on overall rating. He's a skilled, thin power forward.
So I simmed the regular season for my second year, finished 4th in the conference and my Juco recruit led my team in scoring and rebounding at 12 & 7 per game.
So on to the NEC tournament I had a real tough battle at St. Francis (NY) to start it off. It was back and forth the entire game, I don't think either team got up more than six. I ended up winning by two after they hit a meaningless three at the buzzer. It was the first game I actually used the juco PF, he was a beast. I had 23 and 11 with him.
Game two was at Robert Morris who upset #2 seed Mount St Mary's. I controlled the first half and executed well on offense, led by 9 at the break. My offense then went ice, ice cold to start the second half. RMU chipped away at my lead as I couldn't through the ball in the ocean. The eventually took a seven point lead, I was watching my season melt away possession by possession. I started pounding the ball inside to my PF and he carried me after a quiet first half. I was up one with under :10 to go when my PF got fouled and I was in the bonus. He's got 84 for FT so I figured I'd be all set but he missed the front end. RMU got the board, came down and shot a contested three at the buzzer that bounced off the back rim and fell harmlessly to the ground. My PF had 20 pts and 10 boards, some nice round numbers. One win away from the dance.
The finals took place at my home court against Farleigh Dickenson, also a lower seed who upset Sacred Heart (the #1 seed) in the semifinals. I kept a 6-10 pt lead for a majority of this game but let it slip away late after I choked at the FT line and gave up too many offensive boards. I had a nine point lead with three minutes left but FDU tied the game up with :10 left and I couldn't get a good shot off and my fadeaway at the buzzer never had a chance at going in. So on to OT, I couldn't believe I had let a 9 point lead, and my ticket to the big dance, slip away in regulation. But fear not, in OT my PF carried me, scoring 13 of my 20 points as I won by nine to win the NEC crown and get my automatic bid! My PF had 32 pts and 14 rebounds, both career highs.
Watching the Selection Show is so much cooler with a low major team, wondering what powerhouse you'll get crushed by in the opening round is pretty cool. I drew a 15-seed and got Texas in the first round, the game was at Rupp Arena.
The first half was awesome, Texas came out asleep and I was executing on offense. James Feldine, a sophomore SG and my sixth man, had 14 first half points (a career high lol) and Damion James and AJ Abrams were both shut out. Feldine also hit a three at the halftime buzzer tying the game at 31 all. I couldn't believe it, I was struggling so much with the NEC teams yet I was hanging in with the mighty Longhorns.
And then the second half started...
Back to reality pretty fast, my offense became stagnant as hell and Texas got hot on offense plus started forcing turnovers. I got outscored 40-16 in the second half, Feldine didn't score a single point after the break.
So the season ended and off to the coaching carousel, I wasn't expecting any offers yet but much to my surprise I got offered the VCU job - I immediately accepted obviously. Eric Maynor had just finished up his senior season but they have a young core and Anthony Grant had signed a 4-star SG who turned out to be the best player on the team as a freshman and a 77 overall. Grant moved on to Georgia btw.
Looking forward to playing a majority of the games now that I'm at VCU. Definitely a nice change from playing with UConn all the time in my other legacy.
