A 26-10 record in Year 5 earned Howard the regular season title and MEAC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Howard was named a 13 seed in the West Regional, and their first round opponent....Gonzaga (overall 89 and Coach Few is still there). Gonzaga finished 25-7, 13-1, #12 in the polls,
I earned career win #100 in the MEAC Conference Semifinals vs South Carolina State. Also, Howard broke into the Mid Major Polls, claiming the #21 spot.
WE BEAT GONZAGA! I could've sworn that the game was theirs but Howard shot 57% from the field, 7-7 from 3, and won 82-71. Howard advances to the 2nd round to play #5 Oregon, who beat #12 Holy Cross.
WE BEAT OREGON! Outscored them 41-30 in the second half to run away with a 88-71 victory! Moving on the Sweet 16 to play the West Regional's top seed Texas, who scored 125 points in their first round win over High Point.
Texas rolled over us in the Sweet 16, winning 103-69.
Texas would go on to make the Final 4, along with #3 Michigan State, #3 Kansas, and #4 Ohio State. Texas would lose to Ohio State in the NCAA Championship Game.
The NIT Final Four consisted of #3 Memphis, #1 LSU, #5 Washington, and #5 Villanova. Villanova beat LSU in the NIT Championship.
I was finally named Conference Coach of the Year. But not a single Howard player was named to any all-conference team.
I decided to leave Howard, and after declining positions at East Carolina and Valparaiso, I accepted a 3-year deal with UNC Wilmington in the CAA.
