I just noticed a pretty cool thing with one of my former assistant coaches. Just a little background, I'm about 30 years into my closed legacy with stops at Lafayette (6 years), San Jose St (22yrs) and now Northwestern (7thyr). I was lucky enough to have won 2 NC's at SJSU, thanks to owning California Juco 4 and 5 star players year in and year out. During that time I had a great assistant coach who was A+ charisma and was my lead recruiter, he was also my best scout. I knew he got hired for a job after 10 years or so with me but never really followed him, this season with Nortwestern I noticed he is now the head coach at Wisconsin. He managed to get a better job and team than me! Pretty neat I thought, even though he's in his 70's now.

A friend and I started this legacy the day I brought the game home brand new the day it came out and here nearly 5 years later there are still cool things I find in this game, its incredibly deep.

Yea, assistant coaches and the coaching carosel adds another dimension to this game. I don't follow it as much, but in the years it's been nice to see asstants from other teams, built of programs basically by having an high/decent teaching and great charisma.

Re: Interesting things that's happened in legacy.

I was wondering if anyone has established a relationship with a ABL team, or a specific area after you left for a new school.

I ask because i spent my first eight years at UMES, and I scouting the east heavily consistently getting recruits from the ABL teams Prep United, Raven and Mint Condition.

I was in my second year with Fresno St, and noticing I had a lot of east recruits with medium and high interests, and during the early signing period I got a four star SF out of Baltimore he played for Raven, soon after his teammate a three star SG interest increased, I made contact with him in week one, but never put him on my target list. He signed in the off-season. I then advanced to the next season and had a freshman PF walk-on who played on Raven with them both.

I found this very interesting, but I wanted to know what you guys thought, because I did need a SG and PF. What would you chalk this up to?

                      Side notes

*During my new Radford closed legacy one of my guards tore his patella the first game of the season, and is out 306 days (Med RS).

*First time seeing guys transfer to another Top 6 conference:

                      PJ Hairston to Kansas
                      Sheldon McClellan to Pittsburgh

Im a complete noob to this game. First off, this game's depth is amazing!

2nd how do I target recruits, Ive seen the Target tab but I cant figure out how to add to it.

3rd, I started a closed legacy at Howard University with only 1 available scholarship I NEED size! Im recruiting some world recruits and some local talent but no one is close to signing! Ive searched tons of boards that had alot of help but I wanted to know how long it is going to take to get a steady stream of good talent coming through my program? (I want to stay with one school the whole time)

                          Thanks in advance

To target recruits, at least on PS3, you go to any recruit that you want to target and press the "start" button, then a screen should pop up that gives you the option to add up to 15 total recruits to your target board and another option to manage that board.

As far as getting a "steady stream" of talent to Howard, that likely will not happen. I've done multiple closed legacies, mostly just sim the games nowadays b/c I believe the sim engine in this game is amazing when you put the time in to set rotations, lineups, read the scouting reports and try to exploit the opponents weaknesses, but in the one legacy I did where I played the games to test your theory of "I wonder if I can get 5 star players to a small school", I won two national titles in my first four season in a closed legacy at Hartford, and even then the best I could get (with the majority of my coaching attribute points going into charisma) was a class of a couple 3 stars and 2 stars. Maybe someone else on these boards had the patience to stay at a small school long enough, but I left after the fifth season for Creighton and started getting 4 and even a couple 5 stars before leaving for Duke after six season at Creighton.

I'd say your best bet is trying to land 4 star world recruits or Junco recruits. Usually with the Junco recruits, you can hit them heavily at the beginning of the season to get a head start and can get lucky with a mid-season commit.

Re: Interesting things that's happened in legacy.

In my legacy in my signature in which I started at Princeton, I started to nab 3*, 4*, and even a few 5* recruits during my nine-year tenure there. The 5* recruits didn't come until late in my tenure, but 3* and 4* recruits were fairly regular after my first few years. At first, you're just going to have to settle for some 3* steals and 2* recruits, though.

Make sure you check out the international recruits, too. You can usually steal some talent there, though it's a bit of a roulette wheel as you can't really scout the world recruits well, but it is still a good idea. In fact, if you exploit it too much it can be a bit cheesy.

Hitting up JUCO recruits is also a good idea.

In conclusion, you can get top-notch talent to Howard, though it's going to take awhile and take a lot of building up to get there. You still probably won't quite get as good as recruits as some of the power conference schools as I don't believe you ever get as many recruiting points, but you should be able to pull in top 25 classes eventually and, if you are good at recruiting, you may even be able to pull in some truly elite classes.

Re: Interesting things that's happened in legacy.

I just finished a 40 year closed legacy simulating all the games with Hoopscast. While I didn't get as attached to my players as I did back in my legacies where I play the games, it was still a lot of fun and it allowed me to follow what was happening with other schools around the NCAA more closely.

I started out at Army and went 12-17 in each of my first two seasons. In the third, I lead Army to the conference tournament championship (upset the first place team in the semis), and with a 15-15 record I was given a 16 seed which resulted in a blowout loss to UCLA.

After that season I left for the Davidson opening, and in my two seasons at Davidson I made the NIT and NCAA tournament, losing in the first round in each. The Long Beach State job opened up, so I took that because I had 5 seniors graduating and didn’t really feel like trying to build Davidson back up lol.

I stayed at LBSU for 9 seasons, making the NCAA tournament 8 times with 1 NIT apperance. I had 20+ win seasons in all 9 years, and managed to get LBSU to the Elite Eight in my next to last season (made it to the second round in my last season).

During the offseasons at LBSU, I noticed an interesting trend. I was hoping that having success at a smaller school and building myself up to a B+ rated coach would land me a gig at a power conference school, but even after the Elite Eight run I wasn't in the running for a single power conference opening. What I did notice was that VCU was winning the Colonial regular season championship EVERY season, along with the majority of the conference tournament titles. The most impressive part of this 9 year stretch for VCU was they had 4 different head coaches, as the success of the VCU program left by Shaka continued for whatever coach VCU hired. The coach would stay for 2-3 seasons and then bolt for the best possible opening available. So teams like West Virginia, Minnesota, and Texas all hired the VCU coach when Huggins, Tubby, and Barnes retired. I realized that I couldn't do better than the Elite Eight at The Beach, so after my ninth season, VCU offered me the job and I accepted.

One other thing I remember (being from Indiana) is that Brad Stevens turned down the Illinois job when Groce was fired at some point during my tenure at LBSU. I thought it was funny b/c that was the first power conference job offered to Stevens, and he turned it down to stay at Butler, which made the tournament maybe every other season. More on Stevens later.

VCU was head and shoulders above the rest of the teams in the Colonial Conference, and I was able to continue the impressive run of regular season championships. While I only stayed for three seasons, I never had less than a 25 win season, coached a CPOY each season, made the Elite Eight once, and left VCU better then when I took over (89 overall versus 85 overall). During the offseason after my third year at VCU, two power conference schools had offered me a job. Those schools: Oregon and IU. Oregon was rated at 87 overall, IU at 82. On the coaching carousel page, the jobs were listed back to back, and in both cases their number two choice was Brad Stevens. Being a current Purdue student that has been to every home football game since the 2003 season (being a student is the only reason I attended this season's games) and the majority of home basketball games since the Baby Boilers' freshman year, there was no way I was taking the IU job (although part of me wanted to take over and purposefully tank the program lol). Brad Stevens left Butler finally and took the IU gig after I accepted the Oregon job. Keep this in mind for later.

I got lucky my first year in that the Pac-10 was down. Only Arizona and Arizona State were rated over 90, and with the recruiting class I inherited, I was the fourth highest rated team in the conference behinds the Arizona schools and UCLA. I only stayed for two seasons and once again fell short in the Elite Eight in my second. With no Final Fours on my resume, I was more than surprised that Kansas offered me the job when Bill Self retired after winning his second title at KU.

I was able to land some solid 4 star recruits in my first few seasons at KU, but it wasn't until the end of my fourth/going into my fifth season that I finally landed a five star. In my first four seasons, the best I managed was a Sweet 16 appearance. After signing that five star recruit (the #3 SF in the class) and adding in a solid recruiting class a year later (three 4 star HS Sr. and a Junco So. 4 star) I had a goal of reaching the Final Four in two seasons. I was spot on, as I made it to the championship game only to lose to Mark Few's Syracuse team (his first title at 'Cuse). Along the way, I had to beat Brad Stevens' ninth seeded Indiana Hoosiers in the second round , Sean Miller's Arizona team in the Elite Eight, and ECU in the Final Four (more on ECU later).

After three straight Sweet 16 exits, I had a veteran team return. My 7-man rotation consisted of 5 senior starters (4 of which started the previous season), a junior sixth man combo guard, and a senior 6'11" PF that could play both the 4 and the 5. The team went 26-2 in the regular season, won the conference tournament, and ended up winning the national title over Billy Donovan's Florida team.

After two more seasons I left to try and revive the Purdue program, which had been in the basement of the Big Ten for most of the past 10 seasons. I had 9 seasons before the 40 years were up to win a national championship at Purdue. Long story short, I managed to win the national championship in my 8th season and lost in the Final Four in my last season. Brad Stevens was still the coach at IU during my time at Purdue, and those game were fun to watch in Hoopscast. It almost as if the game knows when you are playing your rival, b/c most of the games finished with one team winning by less than 10 points.

Some interesting notes about coaches and teams in this legacy:

-Mark Few and Shaka Smart took over for Syracuse and UConn shortly into the legacy and they stayed at their respective schools for the remainder of their careers, with Few winning one championship and Shaka winning none.

-ECU became a powerhouse program after 10 seasons or so. They seemed to be a 1 seed every other year, and they won 2 national titles during those last 30 seasons.

-Michigan won 3 titles during the 40 seasons, all surprisingly under Thad Matta, who was fired from Ohio State in 2011, sat out a season, came back to coach Valpo for four seasons, then took over for Michigan and stayed until he retired, winning 3 titles in a short amount of time (I wanna say he was there for 10 seasons...unreal). The best part is Ohio State was battling with Purdue for the basement of the Big Ten during my tenure at Kansas, and Ohio State never made the NCAA tournament after firing Matta.

-I started the legacy with this year's rosters, and so the coaches NAMES are current, but for Sean Miller and Billy Gillipsie they have Lute Olson's and Bobby Knight's record on their resume, so both coaches finished with over 1,400 wins lol.

-VCU continued to be THE place to go if you wanted to be high on a team's list for a power conference job.

-Teams that dominated the power conferences for most of the 40 seasons: Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Florida, and Maryland.

-The Big East was still a ridiculous conference, with no team being able to get a run of dominance within the conference.

-I lost my assistants after winning the national championship the KU. One went to Buffalo and never made the tournament, but wasn’t bad enough to get fired. The other went to Lamar for five seasons then took the Rice job until the legacy ran out.
