    Re: Is Basketball Fixed?

too lazy to wade throught this thread but simple answer

College Bball in the '50s WAS fixed and also had problems with points shaving (gambling)

Pro Bball has never been fixed and never will. The NBA has a strict anti-gambling policy. In fact that's one reason why you'll never see a team in Nevada. Also when Toronto and Vancouver got their teams there was a sports lottery with NBA games on it. They had to put the NBA games off of the lottery because of the NBA rules.

Tho at times you have to wonder. The Jordan "flu game" comes to mind. Then again I could just be bitter that the Jazz had to lose to Jordan both years.

Yeah i agree that pro hoops isn't "rigged" or "fixed" because there are simply too many intangibles that take place in a game. It's not like player can say "ok i will hit two big three's now too even the score" basketball is a difficult/near impossible sport to fix without it apperaing obvious.

That being said the stars definetly do get favourable calls (just as the "rebels" like Artest and Sheed get more referee scrutiny) which can play a role in a team winning or losing. However basketball, despite all the distractions, controversies etc is still a relatively simple sport. If you put the round orange thing through the hoop more times than your opponent you win, it's that simple.

A good example of this is MJ's game winner vs the Jazz a few years back. Many people have argued that the game was fixed and Jordan should have been called for a push-off on Russell. Despite what people believe MJ still had to make the shot under extremely difficult circumstances. If he misses that shot nobody would be complaining about the push off. (same can be said with Kings making free throws in the WCF's)

Good topic though (even if a slightly unclear one).

If basketball is considered "fixed" due to superstar noncalls, then football is "fixed" when a holding penalty is called at random times during the game all the while occurring on every play. Baseball is fixed when a strike zone is adjusted to the home plate ump's perception. Heck, anything can be deemed "fixed" if you play around with enough what ifs.

In the NBA, for a game to be fixed thered be alot of very close shots and layups/dunks. Shooting 3s does not guarantee you points because of the difficulty of the shots. I believe the refs do give unfair advantage to veterans over rookies or very young players and for superstars like Shaq, Kobe, Iverson, Mcgrady, Pierce etc etc.

There was an interesting article about this subject awhile back. But they brought up the point that the last 22 out of 23 NBA Finals have had New York, L.A. Houston, and Chicago in them. Those 4 cities are the largest NBA markets in the league. Those cities bring in the most ratings as well. The only NBA Finals not to have any one of those teams? The 1990 Portland vs Detroit series. Pretty weird isnt it?
