        Re: Is Basketball Fixed?

I only just noticed this thread, so forgive me if my comments are redundant.

Basically, the original poster seems confused. You seem to think the refs fix games to be called a certain way, then you mention how teams ALWAYS come back from 15+ points down. Howver, refs can't make those runs happen. It's the PLAYERS that put the ball in the basketball, and it's the players that make those runs happen. Therefore, it would be fair to assume if the NBA is fixed, it's mainly the players that are doing it. It would HAVE to be them that suddenly play lax defense to insure the other team comes back, and intentionally shoot poorly to aid the opposition's comeback.

If it's true that all teams come back from big deficits (which is actually false), the refs have no way of making that happen, so if's the NBA is fixed, it's the players. for that to happen, Stern would have to be in cahoots with all teh major players. They would have secretly agreed to play poorly when ahead, etc etc. But what would be the motivation?? Players already make tens of millions! Secondly, a conspiracy like that, with so many players having to be in on it, would be virtually impossible to construct and keep under wraps. There would be TONS of players mentioning it and calling Stern on it all the time. Why don't they?? BECAUSE IT'S NOT FIXED!!!

If they NBA was a fixed as you accuse it to be...to the point where EVERY team that is down by 15+ will magically come back...then players would HAVE to be doing a ton of 'delibratley letting the other team come back'...but if you watch the NBA, you never even see one instance that looks like a player intentionally lets his man get by him, or lets him make a shot...let alone a WHOLE TEAM DONG IT ENOUGH TO LET THE OTHER TEAM COME BACK FROM SUCH A MARGIN! Damn man...we'd be seeing it all the time. It would look worse than the defense on a AND One mix-tape. Watch an NBA game, and you'd be lucky to see just 2 instances that look even remotley like a team is 'throwing' a game.

Anyway, I see teams consistently get down by big margins and NEVER come back. I actually don't know where you're getting that idea that teams always make it back.

So if you want to accuse the refs of being biased, I'd agree. Heck, players talk about the stars getting good calls, and rookies getting [censored] ALL THE TIME, it's no secret.

But, like I said...if the NBA was fixed, it would have to be through the players. There is NO WAY referees alone could fix a league as consistently as you accuse it of being fixed. However, as I stated as obvious, there is no way the players are letting this happen. If they were..it would be a hell of a lot more obvious, and MUCH more talked about. No way 300+ players could be swayed that much be Stern, and taught how to perfectly throw games and make it look unintentional.

Hopefully people dont get "scripted" confused with "fixed" ... by fixing the game, they would not need hundreds of players.

I do not feel the game is, but every now and then I would not count out a player or ref not fulfilling their job.

About the Jordan thing. Jordan was cleared by the NBA and he continued to play for about 3 or 4 months after the incident

Two things, and I don't mean to be disrespectful, but that's just freaking ridiculous. Have you ever been to a game?

                    1. Since when do teams down 15 ALWAYS come back? I have seen countless [censored] boring games where teams get blown out. Phoenix v Washington yesterday...Suns up 10, 20, 30...Washington NEVER in iy. Boring, but that's sport. Where was your fixed theory there?

                    2. As I said, have you ever been to a game? If so, you'd now exactly why basketball has such a home court advantage. It's indoors and intimate...the fans are right there on the opposition.

Also, the NBA plays a LOT of games. It means arriving in city after city...late nights and early mornings...while the home team gets rest and relaxation. Pretty simple...

Geez I wish people would THINK before they post

                            OK, here's my 2 cents:

If you think basketball is fixed, you are a moron, and don't know anything about sports.

too lazy to wade throught this thread but simple answer

College Bball in the '50s WAS fixed and also had problems with points shaving (gambling)

Pro Bball has never been fixed and never will. The NBA has a strict anti-gambling policy. In fact that's one reason why you'll never see a team in Nevada. Also when Toronto and Vancouver got their teams there was a sports lottery with NBA games on it. They had to put the NBA games off of the lottery because of the NBA rules.

Tho at times you have to wonder. The Jordan "flu game" comes to mind. Then again I could just be bitter that the Jazz had to lose to Jordan both years.
