They deserve a ring, sell out or not.

Re: Payton = Instant Impact In Milwaukee

I haven't changed my mind yet. I maintain that the deal makes them slightly stronger in the short-term (mostly because of Mason), but not enough to make them a factor in the East. Are they closer than before? Maybe. The trade certainly has the potential to fire them up. I think they'll have to get to #5 if they want to have any real shot at making it out of the 1st round. Getting to #5 is possible, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I know this is a forum with a large number of daily posts, kind of a "what have you done for me lately?" environment, but aren't we reading a little too much into one game? Portland is clearly cooling off, and haven't beaten a winning team since upsetting the Mavs in Dallas four weeks ago.

A better test will come this week. If the Bucks beat Minnesota tommorrow, and/or win at Indiana on Friday, I may have to shut up. They should be able to beat a slumping Phoenix team at home on Wednesday, and obviously Atlanta on Sunday. If they go 3-1, I'll quiet down.

Payton will not resign with the Bucks in the offseason. I'll be back to eat my crow if I'm wrong. But this guy is not Chris Webber in the prime of his career. Payton is nearing the end, and is far more motivated by trying to win a championship NOW than big money.

Also, a Payton-Cassell backcourt will not work over the long haul. I'm not yet convinced that it will continue to work this year. Yes, a two point guard lineup is intriguing for fans, and I'm certainly as intrigued to watch it play out as anyone else. But if two point guards, two ballhandlers were superior, we would have seen it long ago. Two point guards are certainly better than two shooting guards, but both positions exist for a reason. Ask Gary Payton or Sam Cassell whether they'd rather play with a true shooting guard or another point...well, wait and ask them when they can be more honest, like next year.
