Ok after reading that it doesn't sound too bad. Lakers can pay him the most so logically the only reason Kobe could have for leaving is to lead his own team.

They can pay him the most?? Every team has the same salary cap, this isn't baseball.
In order for Kobe to go to Memphis (and West has made no secret that he is planning on persuing it), Memphis has to get rid of Jason Williams and Lorenzen Wright to have enough cap room to get into the ballpark. Then, they have to hope that Pau doesn't ask for too much when his rookie contract is up after next season. It is a longshot, but I think Kobe will either be in LA or Memphis, I don't see him wanting to go anywhere else. Hell, the only reason Memphis is a consideration is because of West.Comment

Squid, you are forgetting about the Bird Exception. The lakers can pay him whatever they want because he is on their team while another team can only pay him what they can afford under the cap.
I'll say this now. There is no way Kobe is leaving the Lakers! He is in the number 2 media market, Shaq will retire in the next 3-4 years probably and it will be Kobe's team, and no other team can pay him as much as the Lakers. Memphis is too small of a market for him to go to. Thats the reason he wouldnt sign with Charlotte.Comment

Although every team has the same cap, a player that plays on one particular team for 3 years or more has what they call Larry Bird rights. That means, that his team can pay him more than what's on the cap. So, even tho a team is like $20 mil under the cap, they can only pay Kobe $20 mil, while the Lakers can pay him above that, since he's played with them for years. The cap was designed so that players stay on their own team. Same thing with Chris Webber a few years back, that's why he stayed in Sac-town.
Edit: Doh, what he said up there.Comment

I thought that the Bird Exemption only grandfathers those with non-rookie contracts before 1998?
<hr /></blockquote><font class="post">
As far as I know The Bird Exemption was included in the last collective barganing agreement. If the Bird Exception want their, the Lakers would not have been able to offer Kobe the $54 million extension this year.Comment
