Exactly. If you were a team that picked a HS kid in the draft, you had no real idea what you were getting. So much changes in a person from age 18 to 21.

The people who say, "Well, duh, I knew Dwight Howard would be good..." were probably the same ones who thought Sebastian Telfair was a "can't miss" pick out of high school.

kind of a sticky situation for Oak

I think he's smart for not signing long-term to that team

Charlotte is a bad NBA town, great college town but they didn't support the Hornets

I wouldn't be suprised if he went out to LA. I think he has family out there.

I get sick of hearing people saying this. Charlotte was a great NBA town. They got sick of Shinn & his ownership. They built him a state of the art coliseum that he called obsolete w/in 15 seasons. He let their stars get away. Then he gets involved in a rape scandal. Then David Stern has the nerve to support Shinn & insult the city, the government @ the state & city level, & the town's support.

Charlotte just tired of Shinn & the NBA's treatment of the city. It left a bitter taste in the city's mouth. But the rest of the NBA insiders knew what Charlotte was before Shinn's screwups. That's why there were a number of ownership groups looking to get the NBA back into Charlotte. But after being jilted for an inferior city & arena, its hard for the Queen City to trust the league again.

I agree with everything said above, but 15 seasons? That's a long period

You spend 9 figures on a home that was the envy of the league when it was built, you expect to get more use out of it than 15 years. That arena was state-of-the-art when it was built & started a boom around the NBA. Everyone wanted an arena like Charlotte's. That's how it became "obsolete" so fast. I'd equate it to getting Halle Berry to say I do in '92, & now wanting to divorce her for Beyonce in '07. You had the pick of the litter & now you want to dump it because of a few years? That's foul.

Okafor was probably going to win DPOY last year if he had stayed healthy. He plays great defense and I think he is a GREAT roleplayer. One of those top notch role players that a lot of teams would go after.

And Ben Wallace is probably the most overpaid player that has nothing to do with Isiah Thomas.

There's no way Okafor is a max contract player.

You know someone's going to pay him though. I just have a feeling someone's going to bite this summer. Big men are hard to come by, some GM will pray that Oak can stay healthy for him and pay him the max. If Shard got the max I believe Oak could get it too, I mean he's still very young.

Just because someone will pay it doesn't mean the Bobcats have to. Then again, I'm convinced that all but 2 or 3 front offices in the NBA are completely stupid.

Oh yeah of course Charlotte doesn't have to. But you said he isn't a max player, something I tend to agree with.. I just also believe he's going to get max money the more and more I think about it. Especially if he stays on his current pace early this season.. he's definitely going to get big money.

That's far from the truth, Telfair's game was never suited for the NBA. He's gifted, but his style was better suited on the playground. Most scouts in the NBA knew he was going to be a bust especially since he didn't want anything to do with college ball. Bad example. Now a player like Shaun Livingston is a better example, crazy handles in high school great passer, but the dude's 6'7 now! I think that's a little too tall to play the point....Magic is the exception.
Cameras or guns, one of them is gonna shoot me to death.

If he proves himself this season, then he's worth the risk. But if he misses 20 games again, a team would be a fool to give him that much. But as you said, the NBA ownership is full of fools. That's why they have a salary cap. Because they can't control themselves.

I am pretty sure there are plenty of team who will offer Okafor a max deal. One of those probable teams is PHI, they need a big guy over there. GS and CHA also if they have the cap space.
