There's still no guarantee that Nash would've taken off like he has if he would've stayed in Dallas. Had Dallas been able to hold off Miami in '06 then it wouldn't have been a mistake. As it stands now, yeah, big mistake.

i did raise the question as to why Dallas's record improved after Nash left when discussing Dirk's MVP credentials. A big reason for the improvement in the Mavs' record was Dirk's improvement, but i bet now that Dirk's improvement would have been even greater if Dallas would have kept Nash. (it's crazy that having a playmaker like that, a true point guard of that caliber, can be taken for granted...but he was)

with this team, it's clear that record is not the correct barometer in judging how good, or how serious of a contender, the Mavs truly are. imo, If they would have had Nash when Dirk and Josh both took it up a level, Dallas would have been even better and the improvement would have been even greater. Yes my feeling on this has changed after some time watching the Mavs play without a true point guard, and some time watching Nash play at such an elite level with the Suns.

Are Mavs done dealing? You would think they would want to find another big body, sign or trade, to fill in for Diop.

I like the trade and its pretty exciting seeing Kidd back in a Mavs uniform.

With regards to Kidd, don't discount just what having him on the team, period, does to this team. The other players on the Mavs were absolutely giddy that the dude is in a Mavs uni now. This move in-and-of itself can do something to ignite and motivate them to play even harder/better.

Also realize they didn't have to touch their top 4 players (Dirk, Terry, Howard and Stack) to get one of the best in the league.

Does this move put them "over the top?" Maybe not -- only time will tell, but I like that the Mavs are making a move that says "We're tired of this almost crap -- we want to win it all now." I'm old enough to remember the Mavs 13-year playoff drought, but I think most of us are at the point now where we're saying "we've been good for a while now and it would be nice to be champs instead of just contenders." Suffice to say, I love this move. Is it risky? Yes, but most of the time in order to have success you're going to have to make some risky moves. I'd rather they try and get burned than not try at all (see current Texas Ranger ownership).

And yeah, it kicks arse to see Kidd in a Mavs uni again.

Kidd brings fun back to humdrum franchise

We could go all Naismith on you and diagram how Jason Kidd's arrival will make the Mavericks better.

We could drift into the psychological realm and argue how much this team needs his mental toughness.

Or we could skip the pretension and break this deal down on a more elemental level.

Kidd will make things fun again.

The Mavericks will never embrace a feel-good theology under coach Avery Johnson, and that's fine.

Hard work and discipline are bedrock principles to win a championship. Teams don't grow when they avoid adversity. They grow when they fight through it.

Still, you must admit this franchise hasn't had much fun since the third quarter of Game 3 against Miami on June 13, 2006.

That's a long time to feel glum.

Mark Cuban admitted Tuesday that a malaise had settled over his team. Whenever the Mavericks owner sends reporters scrambling for a dictionary, you know things are bad.

"What happens in any business, there are lulls," Cuban said. "When you are doing the same thing for years and you reach a plateau, try to stay at that plateau, it's hard not to take some of those things for granted.

"I think this year we started taking some of those things for granted."

The Mavericks work hard. That will never become an issue with this team.

But remember back in October when Johnson admonished the media for suggesting the regular season meant nothing, that the only chance of redemption for his team would come in the playoffs? Well, Cuban conceded that the media, fans and everyone – we assume everyone includes players, coaches and the owner – seemed to be waiting for the postseason.

Cuban gambled a significant amount of his fortune that Kidd's iconic status will spark this team. The point guard's passing and creativity won't hurt, either.

Defenses have been grinding on the Mavericks this season. Opponents have sat on their half-court sets. In Dirk Nowitzki's words, "Everything was hard."

In my words, this offense had eroded into a paint-by-the-numbers tableau that relied too much on isolation.

Nowitzki isn't the leader of a mutiny. The Mavericks advanced to the Finals and he won a Most Valuable Player trophy in this offense. But Nowitzki is quick to point out that the passes he grew accustomed to receiving from Steve Nash were nowhere to be found after his friend was allowed to walk to Phoenix in free agency.

That's not a knock on Devin Harris or Jason Terry. It's a reality.

"I mean, Devin was great getting into the lane, but I felt sometimes he was finishing a little too much in there and didn't really find his shooters when they were open," Nowitzki said. "Jason will do that. ... We know when somebody is open, he's going to get them the ball.

"We want Jason Kidd to be himself. He's one of the best in the open court. Josh [Howard] is one of the best in transition, making plays, slicing through the paint.

"And I like a high-paced game where I can move more freely instead of eight guys bumping me in the lane. Where I can run and be open some, attack off the dribble if they run at me."

Kidd won't re-invent the Mavericks' offense. But he will invigorate it. He will give it a chance to match baskets with Phoenix, Golden State, Denver and Utah.

"It's not geometry," Kidd said of working with Nowitzki. "This is basketball. It's a matter of both of us being ourselves."

Kidd being himself will make the offense easier for the rest of the Mavericks.

Cuban doesn't believe the Mavericks let up in their first-round loss to Golden State. He believes the team had to work so hard to get through the regular season, it had nothing left. Kidd was acquired to make sure this team has something left in April, May and beyond.

Cuban opened Tuesday's news conference by saying Kidd was the reason he bought season tickets to watch the Mavericks play. His hope is that bringing Kidd back will allow fans to once again purchase tickets to watch the Finals at American Airlines Center.

"People always talk about the window," Nowitzki said. "To me, the window is this year. That's how I look at it. Then, if we don't make it, we have another window next year.

"I mean, we live in the present. We've got to make the most out of it. We feel with his floor leadership, with him running the point and guiding people, we have a better shot in close games and closing games out."

It should be fun.
