The NBA has been a soft league for a few years now

After following the league more and more as of late, I've come to the conclusion that it has become a league of babies and whiners. One of the biggest thing is FOULS. They call way too many of them particularly against the defender. If a person drives hard to the basket then he deserves what he gets but instead its call a Flagrant or just a foul. I played organized ball but as a slasher, you are the one that initiated the foul. There should be more no-calls like back in the day. " Kobe drives to the basket and tries to squeezed between three defenders, he shoots up a wild shot but misses, great D but wait a second, he is foul. The guy Kobe jumped into is call for a foul because he jumped straight up and Kobe came down into his body" The atrocity has to be stopped. The 88-89 Pistons would not survive in todays league. Taking a charge has changed the league also but that might be because you cant play defense any other way. Stern has this league as soft as a baby's scrotum. Let them play and only call hard fouls. And we havent even got to the whiners, AI is the biggest one, he is about 3 foot 6 and drives to the basket into 3 or 4 ten footers and complains each and every time. Just let them play.

i agree but scoring was down so they started allowing all kinds of moving picks (2005 phoenix) and calling a foul on the slightest contact.

dirk stepped on duncan's foot in a playoff game in San Antonio and duncan got called for a foul.

    huh??

that's why I've stopped watching the league all together; it's basically a free throw shootout

yeah games were starting to be 85-78, 76-71....I remember that period (anyone remember why it got like that?)....thats when the NBA was in its "trouble" period....and they made all those rules to increase scoring....thats what started ALL of this stuff...NBA officiating in the 90's was where it was at.....Im not sure why the league got away from it...teams were scoring AND a foul was a foul...

The 2 best teams in the league (San An & Detroit) were also the best 2 defensive teams in the league, holding teams down. I remember a playoff series maybe 4 or 5 yrs back with the Pistons vs the Celts that was just unbearable to watch.

Yes, it definitely was about getting the scoring back up but it has gotten ridiculous. I do agree about bringing the 90's refereeing back but todays players couldnt play at that level. Yes, back when the league was in trouble, only about two teams were scoring over a hundred and now more than half but todays league for some reason isn't as fun. But it was way more than foul calls that bought the scoring back up, 8 seconds to get that ball across, 14 seconds on the clock after a foul instead of the full 24. Illegal defense, three foul shots after getting foul on a three point shot. That stupid bail out charge/blocking restricted area in the paint. Forearm in the back of a defender while he has his back to you. And a slew of other rule changes. But as I said earlier, my biggest gripe was fouls initiated by the offensive player. Unintentional tripping fouls, let them go. Just let them play and my god, I didn't even mentioned Hubie Brown, everything is a foul to him.

I actually think players are more built now to play in that type of league (the 90's) than ever before....its just backwards....the more athletically gifted the players got the softer the league got.

Re: The NBA has been a soft league for a few years now

Its also thanks to the flop being called, players are starting to become more actors then athletes, guys shooting and yelling like they were shot, defenders in the post being touched and throwing their arms in the air to attract attention while falling to the ground to get the call and thats the problem with the league. Its become next to impossible for the ref's to identify when a foul is a foul and when its a flop so that isnt helping either. I would love to see flops falling under the same type of scoring system they use for technicals so it might be stopped somewhat but then you will have the problem with players saying it wasnt a flop when the league says it was and then the Players Association coming to defend the player and then the entire situation gets ugly for everyone involved. Im not sure if there is an answer to all of this, the only problem with letting the hard fouls come back is times where it escalates into an altercation on the court, and of course since the brawl thats not a chance the league will take, but remember, there were far more altercations on the court back in the day then there are now by far.

totally agree. I watched the suns-bulls nba finals the other day on espn classic.EPIC. Its like they are playing in a different league.lol. You don't see good series like that anymore. You cant go 10 points without seeing a free throw.

Re: The NBA has been a soft league for a few years now

It's one of the problems that's plagued the league but the NBA is slowly getting better. I hope in three or four more years it's as close to 80's-90's pro ball as it possibly can be and the reffing is certainly one aspect they need to fix.

I mentioned it in the playoff thread, but it was comical to see the Hornets finally rough up Tony Parker one game and he wouldn't stop bitching, after every play he went looking for a ref to whine to.

I would love to see Parker play against the Bad Boy Pistons or the early 90's Knicks.

True, and I think he's even more hated because somehow he rarely gets caught. It's frustrating for fans to see guys flopping left and right and then you have a guy like Bowen who mugs people by comparison and the refs let it slide.

As a fan (and a player obviously) you want to see consistency. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to seeing a Bruce Bowen-type on most NBA teams. He's also a very underrated piece to that championship team.

The nba league is joke. All the silly fouls, flops, grown men crying to get calls is disgusting. This has been one of the worst playoffs if not the worst playoffs that i have have watched. The ref calls are so inconsistent, the league wanting series to go longer for more money, and have certain teams advance for marketing.

Man I would have so much respect for this guy if he just stuck to playing good defense and didn't pull that cheap ****. And I'm not talking about the little cheap ****, I'm talking about the flying drop kick, boxing out 3pt shooters while they are in the air (I'm guessing that's what it was), and the clotheslining.

The West is talented right now. They could revert back to 90s reffing and still have good scoring games. But I don't think the East isn't ready for that.

how did I know the thread would turn into this....lol if you were really watching the game or the series in general you would see Paul was just as bad....but thats besides the point: the whole league is bad...everybody cries to the refs, everybody flops...there needs to be a change, period.

Its funny you mention the bad boy pistons though, they have the all time whiner on thier squad....lol thats still my guy though
