The Spurs are usually slow starters when the season begins. Once everyone is healthy I expect them to be a top contender. Spurs currently lie in 8th in the West, just 3 games behind 1st. The West is going to be wild this year.

I told you they'de be OK. Defense wins chips...the song never changes.

Defense doesn't win championships, balance does

Every year the Spurs start off slow regardless and people call them the things Xcell wrote

Then they change the way they play in the 2nd half of the season and ESPN becomes Spurs fans.

              Its a tired old cycle

7 out of the last 10 champs have been a top 3 defense. 4 of those were #1, and two were #2. Only a couple of those teams had great offense, my man...

Out of those 7 defense-first title squads, the offensive rating (points per 100 possessions) have been:

                      4th SA
                      11th LAL
                      7th SA
                      18th DET
                      8th SA
                      5th SA
                      9th BOS

The only "balanced" champs have been the Heat who were the 9th ranked D, and 7th ranked offense, and TD's first chip team which had the #1 defense, and 4th ranked offense.

Even the Shaq/Kobe Lakers had no balance...they had the #1 defense and 11th ranked offense for their first title, and oddly, the 29th ranked defense and the #2 offense for their 2nd chip.

They improved the D to 7th for the final title.

Bottom line...Great D + 2 dependable scorers = ring...unless you have the two best players in the league on the same team. Other than that, you can't win with mediocre defense, but you CAN with with mediocre offense.

Timmy is carrying this team and other guys like Roger Mason, Michael Finley, and even Matt Bonner are stepping up. If this team stays right around .500, when Tony and Manu come back, the Spurs will be even stronger with the no-Manu/Tony experience. This could bode well for the playoffs, as long as the Spurs make them.

My man and fellow WAHOO Roger Mason is playing very big right now for the Spurs. Besides Duncan, Mase has been the most consistent player for the Spurs.

They could easily be 2-8 or 3-7.. Sorry but just because you're 5-5 doesn't mean anything to me.

To Dre's point of the Spurs always starting slow, I'm too lazy to actually look at their history of starts.. but they've never had to endure the injuries to start like this year.
