All teams SA faced on this playoffs reach Game 6. They are the one who face the most dangerous teams of the WEST.
Also SA's game was very different when they face MAVS. They are more intense during LA and SUNS series.
Of course the referee's on the MAVS series did not allow physical contact that much reason why SA can't play there usual game.
MAVS has not yet earned there championship credibility. Because they failed to close POR and SAC in there weakest form and MAVS strongest form in 5. Lineup that won't last 5 games between LA and SA.
And during the MAVS - SA series, MAVS was playing on there desperate games but not enough to bring SA. They are not a championship team until they passed LA or SA with both teams in there strongest form.
That is what it takes to become a championship team. SAC on the other hand SHAKE the defending champions with both teams on there strongest lineup. Which makes them a threat to the 2 SUPER POWERS (LA and SA).
Even if the MAVS will reach playoffs in next season, they still have to take down SAC's strongest lineup. In other words, before MAVS can be called a championship team, they have to beat first SAC, SA then LA.
But next season, PHX and MIN will be waiting for them because MAVS are not the only one to reach 6 between LA and SA.
It's not if you reach the conference finals you are a championship team, it's how did you reach it. And seeing the lineup of the teams that MAVS has face, makes them a no better team than a 2nd rounder.
Cuban knows it and he knows that what MAVS did this season won't bring them back to the WEST finals again without improvement.
At least the referee was kind enough to take out the physical part of the series or else MAVS is done within 5 games.

You wrote a lot about teams beating the best teams while they are healthy. Well, the Mavs definitely didn't do that this year, but then again, neither has SA. The Mavs caught a Webber-less Kings team, but the Spurs caught a Fox-less and a hurt George Lakers, and a Dirk-less Mavs team.
You can't predict injuries, so a win is a win. Or else, there'll always be an * next to a game.
